"In northern Qaiyore the Avaerans come into conflict with an ancient race in
the northern jungles, and migrate southwards toward Midsea." -Qaiyore
History pre BE3220
[Note:
Hopefully this will be ok. If there is anything that needs to be changed
please tell me. I would like to make the following points. Although the
society is strongly Isolationist this suits me well, to start with it will
help me get used to qaiyore with out being thrown in at the deep end. Also,
I have made hints that the isolation will be broken (see the short
dialogue/speech which should follow this email) This will either happen as
an action from with in or if some other society stumbles on some old records
(about the meeting with the Mir) and chooses to investigate. When this
happens the society will be shaken up a bit which could be interesting.
If this is ok I will get on with writing some more descriptions, and my
first set of actions soon.]
Tora Determinants
Primary
Society name:
The Tora
Location:
Northern Jungles. Only the peasant villages in the west have direct contact
with the outside world (The Hira) the main stone cities are hidden deep in
the jungle.
Languages:
Torian is an ancient tongue unique to the forest cities. The peasants in
the west also speak Hri. In general the scholars of Tora have some
knowledge of foreign language although this is only gathered from talking to
birds, and the various other means they use to view the world.
Size
Scope: Mediocre-Fair ~1,000,000
Land area: square miles: Small
The peasants to the west live in hunting villages. The bulk of the
population live in large connected cities hidden in the jungle.
Philosophical orientation
Primary orientation: Knowledge
aspect: Acquisition (Of current or recent news)
Secondary orientation: Survival
aspect: Isolation
Subsistence
The peasants of the west hunt and scavenge for food. The cities farm trees
and shrubs, these produce a variety of fruit as well as root vegetables.
Before the trees grow old they are cut down mulched and fed to heards of
tamed Tamba and Kaal.
Politics
Ruling agency
Whilst the peasants of the west have only a basic tribal system, the cities
of Tora have are run under a system of communism. Government works upwards
roughly in a pyramid. Small groups (10-20 people) elect leaders (male or
female) who represent them at a higher level. These leaders again select a
person to represent them at a higher level, and so on.
This gives,
Ordinary people Do the work
Community Leaders Lead the workers
The Low Councils Management
The Middle Councils Local government
The High Council National government
The Supreme Leader
The pyramid may only be climbed, death is the only thing that frees spaces
in the system.
Key elements
Azron, The Supreme Leader
High council
Azron:
Power (Fair) value (+1)
Authority (Good) value (+1)
Consent (Good) value (+2)
The Supreme Leader has less power over everyday life and ordinary people
directly, however he has superb authority and consent amongst the high
council as well as good power over them.
High council:
Power (Fair) value (+0)
Authority (Good) value (+1)
Consent (Good) value (+1)
External politics
Hira (Good) value (+1)
The Hira are happy to tell the Tora peasants of any news they hear. However
even the peasants do not know where the cities are. News from them is
gathered periodical only by special groups in return for a small amount of
food.
Capability and culture
Military organization
Professional, standing.
There is little need for an army, it instead works as a police force
although few people step out of line. Those who are in the army though are
those strong in mind, body and devoutness to Jiryal.

There is NO straying from religious dogma. Although in their task to watch
the world and report their findings to Jiryal they come across other
religions these are taken to be mere events that occur in other societies.
Religion
The only religion is to worship Jiryal the watcher. This is similar to the
Bird-like good that is worshipped by the Hira people although the links
between them is unclear. The main part of the religion is to tell Jiryal of
the going on of the world. Although for most these are tales of everyday
life, priest will tell Jiryal of the community. Or even head to the peasant
villages to seek news of the world.
Those who are truly devout, who are spend their entire adult lives
worshipping Jiryal learn to tell him of the affairs of the world. They seek
such knowledge through two means either they talk to birds and ask them what
they have seen as they fly over the land of stop by windows, else they try
and read other objects to see what influenced them.
The only other part of the religion worth mentioning here is the fact that
Jiryal demands human sacrifice. This is not carried out randomly though;
every single person is sacrificed in his or her fortieth year. If they die
before this their body is offered as a sacrifice just after they die.
