There are as yet several unanswered questions about why | this assassin was attempted. And Villard decides that perhaps one of | the better ways to determine some of the answers might be to turn the | tables on his assassins and their network that they might be made to | serve him. Instead of revealing all of the assassins or parts of the | network he works with his people, military, and magic to monitor and | subvert some of the enemies. This potentially gives him access to an | already established network that also has spies in his country and | others of his neighbors and other parts of the world. Some parts of the | network might be further revealed so that some of his new double agents | can be promoted to higher levels and giving him even further information | or influence or perhaps information can be fed to parts of the network | that was left intact and monitored to influence what they know and how | they might respond. | | Very Hard -2 | Triple Action +2 (probably will use coulbe actions in subequent years | such as yr. 4 & 5) | 5 yr action +1 | the extraordinary success from finding the assassins) +1 | Villards influence/authority +2 | the threat to the possible double agents of being revealed to the King | of Taltheran or their brethern and their possible fate +2 | magic skills of the Brotherhood (the mages) in controlling, influencing | &.or monitoring double agents +3 | reluctance of the some of the turned to cooperate or possible triple | agents -2 -2+2+2+2+2+3-2+(0-1-1-1)=+4 A good deal of information about the "enemy" is revealed. The assassin was an agent of a cabal of various dissatisfied and opportunistic organizations and individuals throughout the Tal-Wyr area. This loose cabal has no binding ideology other than the opportunity and desire to acquire power in the post-war chaos. How useful this collection of malcontents could be in the long run is unclear but they would provide clear inroads into the discontent within adjoining kingdoms. | | Action 4 - Trade Concessions and Establshing Facilities | | The Opheir (head of the Brotherhood)In exchange for making King Agrigax | aware of the problems with his country, the actions of his Merchants | Guild and for keeping the assassination attempt relatively quiet, King | Villard asks for some strong trade concessions on many goods they import | and export. King Agrigax should grant some of them since it will also | hurt some of the Merchants who are trying to limit his influence. | Villards Council also asks for the granting of lands in several ports | and towns for the establishment of warehouses and other facilities for | trade. Concessions are also asked about the loosening the restrictions | of the Wizards Guild on magic use for at least Burcancy (the | Brotherhood) mages & the establishment of a Brotherhood mage school and | tower in the Taltheran capital and ccess to their libraries. This | potentially could help loosen the stranglehood of the Guild over this | aspect of life in Taltheran and give Agrigax more of a free hand. In a | bold gesture, Villard sends his Queen to handle the negotiations. Her | competence, bravery and diplomacy is beyond question and saying no to | her will prove difficult for Agrigax. And Villard's revelations about | the assassin network and his informants should help reveal any plots. | Her Highness, Queen Felicia is accompanied by a suitable number of | advisors, military, mages and nobles. and the Duke of Unster, Felicia's | father are asked to accompany her to protect and add weight to the | requests for concessions and land grants. | | The Opheir travels with them to protect the Queen. Felicia and Villard | are probably the greatest rulers the Brucancy and the Brotherhood has | ever seen. Also the desire to lessen the magical restrictions around | them and be more open about some of the things they practice would be a | great boon. Although, the Wizard's power is my no means nearly as | strong as the Brotherhood (surpassed on this continent only by Mir) it | would allow the Burcancy mages the ability to thumb their noses at the | Guild. Also, the Opheir wishes to encourage his King to take the | continued development | of Weather Mages (the Burcancy Battle Mages) off the back burner since | the assassination attempt and provide more resources for their training. | | Difficulty (hard - very hard) | The influence of the Burcancy Royals (Villard/Felicia & the Duke) & the | Opheir - +2-3 | The embarassment of the assassination attempt in diplomatic circles | (Merchants +2/ King +2) | the desire of King Agrigax to weaken some of the influence of the | Merchants &/or Wizards Guild +1 | resistance of the Merchants & Wizards to the concessions (Merchants -2/ | Wizards -3) -1+2+2+1-2+(-1+1+0+1)=+3 Agrigax is a political tough cookie (no suprise there) but he is also not unreasonable: -Strong trade concessions on many goods they import and export--Granted. -The granting of lands in several ports and towns for the establishment of warehouses and other facilities for trade--Refused. Agrigax will cede no land. Alternatively, he offers to lease the requested lands at an extremely low rate. -The loosening the restrictions of the Wizards Guild on magic use for at least Burcancy (the Brotherhood) mages & the establishment of a Brotherhood mage school and tower in the Taltheran capital and access to their libraries--Regretfully refused (national security concerns). As a counter-proposal, Agrigax suggests working towards a formal alliance (and an improvement of the political determinant between the two nations). | Action 5 - Sending Aid, Assistance and Trade | Continuation of aid to the Burcancy's neighbors and allies. Aid, | assistance and trade will be sent to Paraglur, Tanimbar and the Vieisia | (sorry Michael I forgot the name of the part of Celephar I am supporting | and I currently can not access my old actions) And continued trade w/ | Mir. Villard's desire is to continue to deepen and strengthen relations | with his neighbors and allies and to eventually get them all to join the | Alliance. (only Vieisia has signed on to date, I believe). Much of the | trade to Paraglur goes through Count Younness lands and he profits from | it. Some of it legally and some of it illegally, in either case the | trade supports his other endeavors such as the overthrow of Villard. | And although, Villard has traced some of Younness illegal activities he | is not aware of their full extent even as suspicions abound. | | Extra action -1 | Good relations w/ all these neighbors and allies+1 | Royal marrriages in Parglur, Tanimbar & Mir +1 | Desire for all merchants of these lands for continued profit +1 | Parliament support (many members are increasing their coffers through | trade) +1 | Suppport of Count Younness +1 0-1+1+1+1+1+1+(-1+1+1-1)=+4 Money can indeed buy friends, at least temporarily. | >Count Youness Considers an action but decides this year discretion is more appropriate and does nothing.
