It sounds to me like the demons really only used fairly weak magics. 
Illusions, fear spells, dream sendings, and so on.  Very effective against 
an uprepared force, but what the four main armies would classify as "only 
minor magics."  It is possible, though, that the demons trotted out some 
special magics for the Kaeirans, knowing that they wouldn't be as effective 
elsewhere.

I still have the impression that the goblins are saving most of their magic 
for something major down the road.
