Here're my notes on shapeshifters. This is a fairly rough outline.
* Celandran Shapeshifters: Humans who transform into animal forms. The
animal and human forms must respect conservation of mass.
* Lycanthropes: Persons who involuntarily change from human to
animal form under the influence of certain lunar configurations. The
lycanthrope may have voluntary control during other lunar
configurations, and may be unable to change form at all in still other
lunar configurations. Typically found in wilderness regions; possibly
contaigious. Always take predatory forms.
* Skinwalkers: Persons who use magic items, typically enchanted
animal skins, to change from human to animal form. Usually tribal
shamans from the far north or far south. Almost always take predatory
forms. Skinwalkers may under certain circumstances become trapped in
their animal form.
* Dreaming Shapeshifters: Non-humans who can transform into a multitude
of different forms. Prolonged stay on Celandra will cause a gradual loss
of shifting powers. 'Prolonged stay' can mean anything from years to
centuries, but is at least a year and a day of uninterrupted residence
on Celandra.
* The Fae: Nearly all Fae have some power to affect their form.
Sometimes, the change is merely illusory, as in the glamours of the
Seelie and Unseelie Courts; othertimes, the change is real, as in the
pookas and selkies.
* The True Shifters: Servants of the goblin-god Ertoslator the Liar,
True Shifters are amorphous blobs in their base state. They are capable
of duplicating the form and functions of nearly any living thing,
including humans if given sufficient time to observe their target.
Utterly amoral, if not downright evil.
