Celandra is a game in which the players take the roles of societies, rather than playing individual characters. The players will invent a society with its culture and heritage, and will guide its development and interaction with the world. Emphasis will be be placed on developing a detailed history of Celandra, along with myths and legends.

Well, to put my two cents in, what I had envisioned was that the 
Vraa'al, half-Vraa'al, and humans who left with the Empress and Prince 
Barnardus were family retainers, people close enough to the High Lord 
and his family that staying on Arelcar would be *very* uncomfortable for 
them, not members of the other Great Houses. There would only have been 
at most twenty others besides the Empress and the Prince

And, as Juuso says, it's one doozy of a plot device.
