well, the kinetic energy of a fall is certainly proportional to the 
square root of the distance, but the questions then become whether 
the harm that a fall inflicts is directly proportional to the kinetic 
energy imparted (i suspect that the harm goes up rather faster), and 
whether the game construct of "damage" is some sort of 
linearly-corresponding measure of harm.
