Ooh, ooh, my hobby horse! :)

The issue is with what you want the community to look like. If, like me,
you want to hang out in a game community of rules-light players, a game
that that puts out ten crunch-bit supplements a year isn't likely to
attract the kinds of gamers I want to play with. D&D3 attracts players
who like D&D3, not players who like a handful of rules and a lot of GM
judgement call. The types of supplements available for Fudge will
determine what kind of players are attracted to it.

And since crunchy-bit players are more numerous than rules-light players,
we rules-light players quickly get lost in the crowd and become a
minority where at one time we were closer to being equals with the
crunchy-bit crowd.

What gets published reflects a philosophy of gaming, and that will attract
players that mesh with that philosophy.

You can do that with any game... there's nothing special about Fudge
except that it gives you "permission" to do so. It's funny how this
freedom has always existed, but many do not discover it until Fudge gives
them explicit permission.
