Hi, fellas,
i'm looking to change my campaign over to 5pF and i'm looking at the
skills-per-point values for broad- vs. narrow-focus skills. The total number
of skill levels available per point can be measured in Fairs. That is, if one
spends 1 point and gets 3 skills at Fair and 1 at Mediocre, that's equivalent
to 3.5 Fair skills (using the standard 2-for-1 trade-in values for skill
levels). Rated in Fairs, here's what the 5pF chart looks like:
(achtung: fixed-width font recommended)
pts: Broad: Narrow:
1 3.5 2.5
2 6 7
3 14
4 25
(assuming point chart from http://www.panix.com/~sos/rpg/fudfive.html)
That is, unless i've mis-counted, how many skills a PC could get at Fair level
[assuming trading lower levels for higher level skills were allowed]. i was
rather surprised at the levels available to Broad vs. Narrow at 1 or 2
points.
Somewhere in the Fudge core rules it recommends tripling the cost of
broad-based skill groups and perhaps limiting their maximum skill level to
Good. i find that completely realistic and normally use that, but i have yet
to figure out how to implement it gracefully in 5pF. Tripling the cost in 5pF
seems a bit extreme, so i'm hesitant to do that. Calculating the available
skill levels would also be awkward, especially since 5pF allows for trading
high skill levels for lower levels, but not vice versa (unless i missed
something, which is very possible).
[Yes, i KNOW i can re-implement it however i want, but hang on... i'm getting
to my point soon...]
So, given that info, and given that i typically charge 3x for broad skill
groups and cap them at Good, i'd be interested in hearing specific
suggestions for how to fit that into a 5pF chart (a modified version or
otherwise) without having to force it in with a shoe horn. Up until now i've
been using a GURPS-like skill cost chart, but i've finally grown tired of
that level of detail.
(Note: i'm not saying that i have or have not created such a chart, i'm just
very curious how others might do it. ;)
