This reminds me of the celebrated case of wandering into a room deep in an
D&D dungeon (so long ago this would have been just after the AD&D books
first came out) and finding the sole occupant to be a kobold with a wooden
leg in a rocking chair.
The party never did find out the explanation for this. They just shut the
door and legged it.
