It may be that MT uses Javascript, I don't remember specifically. It's all eeeeevil, for reasons specified elsewhere. I'm just going by their prerequisites page, I don't know exactly where it's used. I assume when they say it's required that that means it's vital; YaBB "uses" Javascript but works fine (so far) when you gut the scripts, you just lose things like all the auto-HTML crap that I'm removing anyway.
