
Calbeyn seems to have calmed down now. All the city has on edge following a series of assassinations, some of important people, some of insignificant human merchants. The victims included the head the local Karazthan, an very important noble from Zenatan in the north, and the daughter of an influential noble family. At one point the Tharn ordered the city sealed to prevent the assassin's escape, with wizards reading the mind of everyone entering and leaving. There are conflicting stories about what happened to the Karazthan, the secretive but powerful guild of machines. Their workshops have been closed for four days now after something terrible happened, which might be connected with the assassination of their leader. Some rumours say some device exploded and devastated the place. Other people talk of an apprentice running amok with a deadly weapon. And the most far-fetched story of all is that a gigantic creature summoned by the wizards of the Academy of the Mind ate them all. Almost all stories agree on one point; a great many people died. Now three days have passed without any more extraordinary events, and things are slowly returning to normal. The gates are reopened. Caravans and river traffic have resumed, and the merchants, traders and shopkeepers of the city are making up for lost time, and lost income. It's early afternoon, and the day's business is in full swing. Most of the taverns are open and busy, entertainers compete for the attention of the crowds, and more than one pickpocket tries working the crowds.
