Kalyr is set in my original fantasy world of Kalyr, and focuses on the struggle between the ancient and decadent kandar civilisation, and their rebellious human slaves. It features psionics, arcane technology, strange alien races, mystery and intrigue. Influences include Gene Wolfe & Jack Vance, but don't let that put you off!

Kalyr 71e - Calbeyn at dawn

[Zul]
If none of the big timbers looks like it's going to hit them, Zul will simply
cover mother and baby with her leather coat as the sparks fly. If they're in
immediate danger, she'll grab the mother and lead/drag her across the street.

Once they're not threatened, she'll give the mother a First-Aid once-over as
well, then hand the baby back to her.

Rotemdol looks up

'This does not look good', he thinks, ' If she knew what she was doing
she would slide down. Probably she will freeze from fear. Wonder how
long till the ropes break, probably not enough time to do anything,
but one has to try...'

Rotemdol spots a rusted drainpipe running down the side of the burning
building on this side away from the flames. He judges this would be
the fastest way up, and begins to climb. Unfortunately it can't take
his weight; he's just a few steps above the street when the entire
drainpipe comes away from this side of the building forcing Rotemdol
to jump down.

As the pipe crashes down across the street, forcing Zul to jump out of
the way.

Rotemdol dives into the doorway of the adjacent building on the side
the fire has yet to reach. He reappears from a high window level with
the woman.

He throws a rope to the woman, so that she can swing down on it. His
first throw is beyond her reach, but she grabs the rope on her second
attempt.

Her swing down to the street is not elegant, and will win no prizes
for athletic stunts. And she lands hard, right at Zul's feet.

As if on cue, part of the tenement building from which she's just
escaped collapses from within, spilling burning timbers into the
street.
