Kalyr is set in my original fantasy world of Kalyr, and focuses on the struggle between the ancient and decadent kandar civilisation, and their rebellious human slaves. It features psionics, arcane technology, strange alien races, mystery and intrigue. Influences include Gene Wolfe & Jack Vance, but don't let that put you off!

New Kalyr: 72a - The Machines

Reylorna keeps a careful watch. From the prisoner to the way they had
come, to the room that is now being explored there was a lot to pay
attention to but she did her best with a roving eye.

Dharak makes eye contact with Jal to make sure he heard the steps as
well.

Dharak mindspeaks to Reylorna. "*Send Ryzar and Duplar up, quickly
and quietly. There's more company in the side passage up here.*"

She answers quickly with The Way of the Will. *on their way*.

He puts himself against the wall through which the side passage
opening issues, covering the entryway with the strange weapon. Jal
moves up with Dharak, keeping to the other side in order to cover him,
despite his lack of missile weapons. His blades are ready, and he's
begins whistling something obscure, probably a heroic march, before
realising this will draw the attention of the owner of the footsteps,
and falls silent.

Reylorna indicates with the motion of her hand that Ryzar and Duplar
should join the others while stating "more company up there."

Nodding a confirmation, Ryzar holsters his dartgun and quietly draws
his wide-bladed shortsword. Then, with the careful tread of a
wilderness trained warrior, Ryzar stealths his way up to where the
others wait in ambush. Duplar follows, still holding the Karazthani
lightning wand

Four figures step out of the side-passage. The first is a rather ugly
human male, the second is a kandar woman with cropped brown hair, the
third a kandar man, wearing a wide-brimmed hat concealing much of his
face, despite the fact that the whole place is underground. The
fourth wears a cowled robe, hiding his face; no-one can tell race or
gender.

The human leans over one of the control panels, and flicks a switch.
Several greenish lights begin to glow, and the humming sounds get
louder. So far none of them seem to have noticed they have visitors.

The two kandar exchange glances, and the woman says something agitated
in a language nobody present understands.

Reylorna continues to look about trying to keep watch on the area as
well as their prisoner, giving the prisoners a little more attention
in case they attempt to take advantage of the situation. She notices
four man-sized figures stepping out of Dharak's side-passage, but her
attention is distracted by an crude attempt to control her mind; it
seems somebody wants her to release the prisoner's bonds. But her
will is powerful enough to resist, and she realises the attempt is
coming from the orange prisoner.
