Kalyr is set in my original fantasy world of Kalyr, and focuses on the struggle between the ancient and decadent kandar civilisation, and their rebellious human slaves. It features psionics, arcane technology, strange alien races, mystery and intrigue. Influences include Gene Wolfe & Jack Vance, but don't let that put you off!

Kalyr: Kalyr 72c - The Machines

"By the Eternal Flame!" Ryzar exclaims, surprised by the woman's
apparent... nothingness, "It MUST be some trick..."

Now that Jal has been thrown clear, Dharak targets the robed figure.
Meanwhile Reylorna warns her comrades through mindspeak *she called
for the Beastmen, reinforcements I imagine.*

Given the ineffectiveness of melee weapons against these strange
beings, he decides to take a second to aim. More important not to
miss, he thinks, grimly.

Ryzar quickly mumbles to himself; realizing that this Kandar Woman
must be some kind of Witch. But, the Kolder HATE Witches......

"Rrrr-aaah!" Ryzar growls in frustration, as he swings again at the
Kandar woman, hoping that, perhaps, her trick if "in-solidity" is only
temporary. This time his blow hits something; she lets out a scream
of pain.

Reylorna attempts to put the woman to sleep one more time, forcing her
own will to greater effort. This time her attack is strong enough to
overcome the woman's mind shield, although Reylorna herself feels the
sword blow inflicted by Ryzar.

The woman falls at Ryzar's feet. But as Dharak squeezes the trigger
of the weapon to shoot the only visible opponent, it's lifted up and
swung round, the beam narrowly missing Duplar, who is forced to duck
for cover.

Rolling to his feet, Jal looks around to see if the machinery might
have anything to do with this effect - There are no wires go up the
bloke's back. He does see the fourth opponent, who had dived beneath
the machinery aiming a hand weapon looking like a cross between
Duplar's lightning wand and Ryzar's dartgun at him.

Two figures burst out of the tunnel from which the other four had
emerged previously; they're large, heavily-build man-like creatures,
with dark grey leathery skin, naked to the waist, with bald heads and
beastial faces. Both wield two-handed axes that look as if they could
easily cut a man in half.
