Kalyr is set in my original fantasy world of Kalyr, and focuses on the struggle between the ancient and decadent kandar civilisation, and their rebellious human slaves. It features psionics, arcane technology, strange alien races, mystery and intrigue. Influences include Gene Wolfe & Jack Vance, but don't let that put you off!

Kalyr : 72e - The Machines

[Dharak]
If the robed one so much as twitches, Dharak will blast it again. If it looks
dead, he'll start shooting at the human with the energy weapon -- if he has a
clear shot.

*Attack the robed one's mind!* Dharak exhorts Reylorna. *At least it
might distract him!*

She answers with mindspeak *just a bit busy here, one of the beastmen
down, now the robed figure.*

She turns her attention to the robed figure trusting Kylar to handle
himself with one of the beastmen, and attempts to assault the
telekinetic. Suspecting that the robed figure will put up quite a bit
of resistance she concentrates and puts all her will behind her
attack.

Her mental probe batters through the robed figure's defenses, just.
The mind is totally alien. Much of it's thoughts she can't
understand, but she realises it's using telekinesis simply to maintain
a man-like form.

It counterattacks before Reylorna can press her attack. Although it's
Way of the Will is slightly weaker than Reylorna, it's strong in the
Way of the World. It picks her up and throws her against the wall.
Then her head is filled with pain, which she realises isn't all hers.

Seeing the robed figure distracted, Dharak fires the energy weapon,
hitting it in the chest. There is a cloud of greasy smoke, and it lets
out an inhuman wail which makes everyone's head hurt.

Jaldaric sees the beam-wielder is preparing to shoot again, and
attempts to throw a second knife at him. Unfortunately Jal's aim is
poor and it passes over the target's head. There is a second sharp
crack and Jal is aware of a severe pain in his left arm. He's been
hit!

"Estcarp Forever!", cries Ryzar as he turns to face the charging
beastman. The creature swings again a Kylar, who fails to parry the
blow and staggers backwards, hit square in the chest. But ducking
under the swing of the beastman's axe, Ryzar manages to close and
attack with his heavy shortsword. The sword bites deep into the
creature's abdomen, thick blood pouring from the wound.

Unfortunately Duplar had no clear target for his lightning wand; he
couldn't risk shooting one of his own side.

The end of the tunnel begins to glow and shimmer. The mirror!
