The crime scene, marked by the bloodstains on the stone steps, is one one of the steep alleys of stone steps linking one level to the next. An archer could theoretically have fired from any of the surrounding buildings, although the ones lining the steps would entail shooting almost directly downwards, a tricky shot. More likely, the shooter would shot along the line of the street, which would have been from the building at the top of the steps; either from a top-floor window, or from the roof. Or, indeed, from the city wall behind and above. "Good riddance to her!", says a fellow draftee, a young woman called Jalguille who Zul recognises from some of the taverns, "That will put the fear of Vandrak into the worst of the kandar". "You're a fool!", replies an older man who Zul does not know by name, "All this will achieve is a backlash against us. The Knights will burn down the entire Anthill next time. They'll have the river red with blood, and it will be our blood, not theirs".
