Kalyr is set in my original fantasy world of Kalyr, and focuses on the struggle between the ancient and decadent kandar civilisation, and their rebellious human slaves. It features psionics, arcane technology, strange alien races, mystery and intrigue. Influences include Gene Wolfe & Jack Vance, but don't let that put you off!

Kalyr 105 - Prisoners [Duplar, Ryzar, Hank, Roy]

Being within the safety of the Karazthani complex, Ryzar has been going
about unarmored, and wears no weapon but a dagger, slung from his belt.
Nonetheless, at the sight of this 'man', Ryzar's hand falls
instinctively upon the hilt of his dagger, and his face curls up into a
snarl.

"Kolder!" Ryzar spits out, "This creature is a Kolder!"

Duplar is somewhat taken aback by the strength of Ryzar's hatred. Still,
in a way, it is slightly reassuring that the beings Ryzar has accused of
being responsible for every evil in the universe do actually exist.

With a sinking feeling, he realises just what he must offer.

"Has anyone from the Academy seen this prisoner yet?"

"Only those who bought it here", he says, "Only the security personnel
involved in the assault, and a few trusted operatives. It's not general
knowledge to Technical, although I have informed Galtheyn, or to most
ranks of Security.

She turns to Hank and Roy.

"I hope I can trust you to keep this secret".

"I'm not sure if there is anyone available locally, outside the Sisters,
better than I am at dealing with the catatonic", Duplar says, "so it may
be that I should see if I can learn anything from him. But before I
try, can you tell me how he became catatonic?"

"You can try, Master Duplar", Ryzar offers, "But the tales of the Kolder
from my land says that many of the strongest Witches tried to mindspeak
the Kolder with little success. Their minds are rigidly structured --
machine-like. In fact, there is a part of the Tale of the Fall of The
Kolder Nest that says some of them have the ability to physically join
with their foul machines, and thus control others".

"The Way of the Will by machine?", Kala asks, "That sounds dangerous.
Even enhancement equipment is too dangerous to use except in the direst
of circumstances".

"Beware this one!", Ryzar points at the Kolder prisoner, "He may, even
now, be in contact with some far-removed Superior. Or, he could be only
stunned, having lost contact with such a supervisor. OR...he may be
faking, and reading our minds, at this very moment..."

"I'm told it was discovered in this state", Kala replies, "It was found
locked in a cell. Does this mean that this one is an /enemy/ of the
others we've captured?".
