Other fun trivia

I have two lists on the new software right now (this one and westworld),
and I have yet to actually see a single bounce. If you peek at headers on
this message, you'll notice that the Sender: is something like
listowners-error@phoenyx.net, rather than the traditional
listowners-owner@phoenyx.net. Bounce messages thus go back to the server
first, which scratches its head and pulls (hopefully correct) addresses
out of it.

It then does several things. First off, it puts an entry in the status
report:

autoremoval of jsiragher@aethertech.com ('Unknown failure.' reported by
postmaster@aethertech.com)

It moves them from the mailing list to a special distribution. The next
day, it sends a message to their address informing them of the error and
telling them how to reactivate their subscription. If they don't do
anything, it sends another message at 7 days and 30 days, and then gives
up on them.

It's pretty smart about figuring out the address, too. If it's a standard
MIME error message, no problem, the address(es) are right there along with
a specific error. Otherwise, like in the above error, it looks at who
reported the error, and finds an address in the mailing list that
corresponds. It's even smart enough to figure out CompuServe errors,
where only the username is given, without "@compuserve.com" to tip off the
server that it's an address. And if it gets an error from aethertech.com
and there's only one subscriber from that domain, it will figure out that
it must be that person even if their username appears nowhere in the
message.

So far, it's only unsubscribed *me* by mistake once...
