We've created a sub-topic called +editors for editor volunteers and
might-be-volunteers to discuss editor-type stuff. Contrary to my usual
methods, I've already selected the sub-topic for all of you who expressed
interest in editing.
First, I have to say that I *really* appreciate that you're even
interested in this job. The Phoenyx is not keeping up with game
submissions and general quality nearly as well as it ought to and I think
it's really hurting us. I'm looking forward to working with a team that
can really fulfill our vision for the Phoenyx.
What is that vision? In a nutshell, it looks kinda like this, which is
something I send to would-be GM's sometimes.
===
The Phoenyx' mission is not to be in the business of providing mailing
lists for games, even though that may be the primary service the
gamemaster benefits from. Our main mission is to provide the internet
roleplaying community with a selection of excellent games run by
reliable gamemasters. It may look like we provide services to
gamemasters, when what we really provide is a service to the *players
and lurkers*. The gamemaster isn't our customer, he or she is our
partner in providing a quality selection to our real customer, the
player or lurker.
===
We want to be *the* place to find great games with *openings* as well as
ones to lurk in. (With over 1000 unique subscribers, most of our
subscribers are lurkers.)
So our first agenda item is to hash out a job description, so that you
know exactly what's expected. The job will come with a lot of tools to
assist you performing these tasks... for instance, we use a JitterBug
trouble ticket queue for all game applications and help questions. We
also want to give editors as much freedom to do their own thing as we can,
while at the same time keep the categories an obvious part of the Phoenyx.
Following is a draft outline, which Karen can amend and you may comment
on... we need to know when we're being unrealistic in our expectations or
if we're missing something.

Phoenyx Editor Job Description (draft outline)
Game applications
Evaluate game proposals for your category in a timely manner.
Communicate with the prospective GM about the proposal and if
appropriate, make suggestions for improvement.
Set up lists and provide new GM's with instructions and assistance.
On-going games
Monitor on-going games for quality and problems.
Catch stalling games before they are unrecoverable.
Assist GM's and subscribers with technical problems.
Recruiting
Actively promote your new and on-going games with openings.
Watch for potential GM's and on-going games and assimilate them.
Help recruit sub-category and assistant editors as necessary.
Maintenance
Maintain category web page, news, etc.
Clean up dead games in a timely manner.
===
That's the bulk of it from where I'm standing. Some things to note... we
plan to limit editors to 15 games. When your category is full, we split
out sub-categories and recruit new editors. We feel that one person can't
keep a handle on more than 15 games at a time and we want to spread the
work load around.
Questions and comments are welcome. Thanks!
