Christmas break is here and that means I have time to do some serious work on the Phoenyx systems. (Working for Boeing hurts in a lot of ways... but getting Christmas Eve through New Year's Day off with pay is one of the few silver linings. That and big, fat paychecks.) 1) Sometime tomorrow, probably in the afternoon, I'm going to take firehawk (the main box) down. I'll be installing a spare drive, cloning the main drive, then removing it to install in the test box and do a test-run on upgrading the kernel and OS. We'll be off-line twice (drive in, drive out) but neither should be terribly long (half-an-hour at most). 2) We're changing ISP's (to escape the evil Earthlink empire). Our new ISP loaned me a spare DSL device so I can verify that it works, and I'll do testing on the test box without disturbing anything. Once the new line is verified operational, we'll be going through DNS gyrations to change our addresses and get moved over. Since I can have both sets of IP addresses operational at the same time, this should be pretty simple, but you may see hiccups as DNS propigates. If your web browser suddenly can't find the site, exit it and restart... Netscape caches IP addresses and never looks them up again until you restart. 3) Can there be more fun? Yeah... if things go well, I'll probably do the OS/kernel upgrade by New Year's Day. I'll let you know if that's going to happen. But you can be sure that it won't happen until the DSL/DNS switch has shaken out. That's my higher priority... Earthlink assures me that they aren't going to support my assimiliated ISP's DSL offerings and they just think I have a weirdly-priced dial-up account. They might drop my DSL service at any time without any warning. -- -------------------------------------------------------------- Game(s): Fudge, Worldmaking, Fantasy Co-Editor, Phoenyx Co-Owner Listowner tools are found at http://www.phoenyx.net/listowners/
