Discussion, mostly technical, about running Phoenyx groups goes here. Hypotheticals and wishlists go in stakeholders.

MGR: Registration

In our quest to create the One World Government (or at least the One
Phoenyx Registration), I'm getting ready for alpha testing of our new
registration method.

First, though, I'd like some feedback on it.

The plan, as it stands now, is to completely refuse any incoming mail that
isn't whitelisted. That'll kill any spam that isn't forging a known
user's address, right there. (Actually, it won't *completely* refuse
it... if looks *really* legitimate, it'll get replied to with a "You're
not using a registered address" response.)

The way to get on the whitelist is to register... the one email address
that'll accept unknown addresses. ("Registration" just means getting a
user's "real" name (at least, something to call them besides the email
address), a WikiName, and a primary email address. In most cases, that
can all be gotten from the email headers.)

Sending mail to the registration address (or registering via web) gets you
a password in the mail. The account isn't active until the password gets
mailed *back* to the Phoenyx, but that can be in your first mail to a
magic (groupname-on@) address, so it still will only take two mails to
join your first Phoenyx group.

Once you're registered, all the usual magic addresses work (and after the
first one, probably won't even require the password), and aside from
telling it about multiple or changed email addresses, you never need to
talk to the registration address again. Registration also creates a Wiki
account and a MOO account.

This will effectively make all Phoenyx lists double-opt-in, which is
always a good idea these days.
