Once again, Microsoft has managed to fatally break Hotmail. At least
this time it wasn't entirely boneheaded.
MSN/Hotmail addresses now refuse to accept mail "from" Yahoo addresses
that isn't sent from a Yahoo server. Which is fine, except it breaks
mailing lists. Technically, what we're doing is RFC-legal, since it was
originally supposed to be the "Sender:" line that indicated where the
message came from *technologically*. ("From: my@home.address, Sender:
my@work.address" and stuff like that.) We can blame mail *clients* for
not properly coping with that, and Sender: has pretty much fallen by the
wayside in usefulness.
However, the practical upshot of this is as soon as a Yahoo user posts to
the list, all the MSN/Hotmail users get unsubscribed. I'll be putting a
another special notice in the bounce messages explaining all this.
