Giant Space Robot Stays Canadian

And now for some good news.

MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates (MDA) of Vancouver has had its plans to sell its entire space division (including the Radarsat 2, Canadarm and Dextre the Giant Space Robot) to a US defense contractor (read: arms company) blocked by the Canadian Federal Govt.

Larry Block killing Castro

Hard Case Crime's latest newsletter tells us that in January 2009 they will be publishing a book by Lawrence Block that has never been reprinted and - if I understood correctly - never been acknowledged as a work of Block. Check it out here. The cover is, as usual, great and the theme interesting, to say the least.

And what was the original book? It was called Fidel Castro Assassinated, published under the pseudonym Lee Duncan, by Monarch in 1961. Sorry, can't find no cover scan. Maybe Bill Cride... Read more

Couch Yahoos

We bought our living room chesterfield used from the previous tenant when we rented our Dundas townhouse.  That was 7 years ago, and we've since bought a new house, moved, etc., but still kept the chesterfield.  Alas, sometime last fall  the Girl-O, who had been fooling around in the living room, enthusiastically made a running jump onto my lap while I was seated in the middle of it, leading to a ?CRACK!? and an uncomfortable sag in the centre (of the sofa frame, not me) was the u... My order from Sportsman's Guide was delivered this morning, but I didn't have time to do much more than unpack the box before I needed to go outside and start working on a storage chest that I've been wanting to build. Today was the only day that the weather was nice enough for me to get started on that project.

I did try on the new boots before I went outside, however. The fit was almost perfect, and they look great. After testing the fit, I pulled them off and went to start my carpentry. Once i... Read more

The Nature of Steampunk Costumes

There have been several times here I?ve seen posters comment that certain outfits are less Steampunk and more Goth or Victorian and so forth. I think the comments on the recent gentleman?s outfit plus the clich? picture (goggles and tophat) made me think about this. I was spurred to post by a conversation I had today with the woman who is playing the HMA Badger?s navigator.
There are several things going on here, so I will see if I can suss them out individually. The first is that there is... Read more

Steampunk Vice Clockwork Earrings

Thought I would try my hand at some sterling silver steamy jewelry - inspired by old Grandfather clock hands. I'm super allergic to almost any base metal (oh the horror, no brass and copper!) so I'm limited in what great anachronistic jewelry I can wear.

I really enjoy how these turned out; kind of a dangerous gothier edge with the sharp looking points. Also did a matching necklace...

Lee Raintree: Dallas, the Finnish version

I was very fascinated by what Steve Lewis wrote at the Mystery*File blog about Con Sellers, a paperback hack who wrote lots of pornography, some crime and adventure, some soapish saga, some science fiction. I noted in Steve's posting that Sellers has been credited with writing, under the pseudonym Lee Raintree, the official novelization of the Dallas TV series which I'm sure you remember so well that I don't have to find a link for it. I've been wondering about the book for some years now and be... Read more

Low-Key SteamPunk

I made a FreakAngels stencil yesterday and spray-painted it onto my hoodie. I figure I can wear it when I don't feel like going out low-key so as not to get gawked at or questioned like when I go out in full garb.

A thought on gun design...

Looking at the variety of guns people have been working on, I am quite impressed with the craftsmanship and quality of execution!

But I can't help getting the nagging feeling that the "gun" concepts are a bit too rooted in the gun designs of the 1950's... ... Read more

Mad science, mad hair

Do you have (or believe you have) luxuriant flowing locks? Are you a scientist (mad or otherwise)?

Then consider joining The Luxuriant Flowing Hair Club for Scientists!

They have pictures. Go see.

naturally, Albert Einstein has been posthumously granted membership. Need you ask?

(Found while browsing the Internet for "mad science." The link was on Wikipedia. So nutty, I just had to share. Hair is part of fashion too, you know.)... Read more

Red Phantom notes - More tasty tidbits about the Jester God

The following was a conversation I had with Don about my dream and ideas that came to me while watching the movie, Event Horizon. Horizon is a gothic horror film in the purest sense. This harkens back to the days of the original Alien. The creeping unknown. You don't know why it's here, you don't know where it came from, you don't know what it is. . .: have you seen the movie Event horizon? ... Read more

Steampunk Media: Principality of Mars

Essentially a fps (first person shooter), the Principality of Mars is a video game that has come and gone in fits, but it appears that it might just be back, and perhaps this time avoid the title of "vaporware" (lol).

I will attempt to keep track of its progress, but at least the atmosphere and weaponry appears to be in keeping with the nominal Steampunk theme.... Read more

I have decided to teach myself to sew and in looking for some help on the internet I found some awesome little tid bits I thought I would share.

First off I got turned on to the video blog Thread Banger when a friend told me I should watch their Sweeney Todd episode.  And Since there I have found many wonderful episodes.  Another one of favorites is how to make PillBox Hats.  I have already designed a couple for myself and hope to have pictures up of finished projects soon.

I know there are a lot of communities out there, but this one is specifically for the seattle area community, rather than the entire NW. Today I will be at the Wayward coffee house, dressed to steam, and if any of you are in the area, I invite you to come, and join me. My friend and I went to a convention in steampunk.

I'm on the left giving you a curtsey, and my friend is on the right. That Jack Sparrow cosplayer was a good lot of fun. I said in an accent "Pleasure to be making your aquantance Mr. Sparrow" and he responded "I've not made your aquantance yet, but I'm sure it will be pleasurable. My word what nerve he has speaking to a lady in such a manner. He is a man of irrevoccably bad character.

Myself, my friend and a different friend dressed up as Willy Wonka. I'm putting the punk in steampunk with my tar... Read more
