The two woman have talked and sang and slept, and now the
alarm goes off. Ilane opens one eye and looks at the
console...no red lights, just a flashing light indicating
the boat is 30 minutes from their destination.

Ilane says in a reassuring tone, "Relax, relax...it's just telling us that
we're now 30 minutes away from our destination." She brings her seat erect and
gets ready to disengage the autopilot. "Now, do you remember what I showed you
about donning your vacc suit? Give it a try and then head over here so I can
see how you did. And be extra careful with the sanitary couplings...they can
be kinda tough for a beginner to set up..."

April smiles back and says, "Thank goodness for that." April brings her seat u
and stretches a bit. "I think I remember what you showed me. If I have any
questions in the process I'lll comm you. Okay?" April then heads out to
begin the tedious process of donning the vacc suit. If she doesn't remember
something she doesn't hesitate to ask Ilane's advice. Once she's finished
she heads back to Ilane for inspection.

"Well, I gave it my best shot...what do you think, cousin?" April smiles.

She didn't get the seal on the back of her right calf
completely closed. It is where her boot seals to the suit's
legs. She wouldn't lose pressure, but it would surely
wrinkle as she moved. At best, that would be uncomfortable.
At worse, she could get some serious bruseing.

Everything else looks completely sealed and smoothed.

Ilane looks closely at April's handiwork. "Very good for your first time...but
let me show you something..."

She walks over and squats down next to April's right calf. "The suit models
that they use for rental suits are pretty forgiving, but there's one thing that
you *have* to remember." Ilane completely disengages the calf seal. "Don't
assume that a seal in fully closed just because it's 'as far as it'd going to
go'. You should turn them until they *snap* in place. If a seal stops turning
without the snap, you should take it back apart and start again." She gently
takes hold of April's hand and guides it towards the seal's housing. "Here,
you can actually *feel* it snap in..." The belter's daughter re-engages the
seal, turning it until it stops with a loud click. "See what I mean?" She
smiles up at her cousin as she gets up. "Once you know what to expect, it's
actually pretty easy!" Now, check your status panel at your wrist. If all of
the bands are in the green, you're ready to go..."

Provided that there's time before their arrival, Ilane will don her own suit.
Otherwise, she'll maneuver the ship into docking position with the asteroid
first.

Ilane sees tjat sje has time to dress in her vacc suit, so
she does. After dressing and double checking her suit she
takes her seat and checks the sensors. The asteroid is
631,000 km away and you are closing at 3,000 kps of pseudo
velocity. You're actual vector has already matched with the
asteroid, you did slowly over the last few hours using the
grav drives....not much boost out this far from anything,
but you don't need a lot when you have time to let it build up.

You can see the blip on the sensor screen. You can also
bring up a video image if you want.

Ilane brings up a video image, and calls April over. She points at the image
of the asteroid on her screen. "There it is, April. That's where we're
heading."

April takes a close look at the image onscreen. "How
much longer do we have?"

"Only a few minutes now." She gestures towards
April's seat with her hand. "You might want to strap
in, just in case..."

Ilane slows the ship down as she approaches in "by the
book" fashion, and eventually docks with the asteroid
using standard procedure (if possible).

The asteroid is large, several hundred meters in diameter.
There doesn't appear to be a docking attachment at first as
you slowly orbit around it, then you see a bright orange
circle.

Moving the boat in close you see that the orange is from
what looks like a large plastic tarp laid over something
flat and anchored into the surface of the asteroid. You can
now see a second orange tarp, this one isn't round, it is
irregularly shaped, covering something to the left of the
large circular tarp. From above and in the boat you can't
tell what is beneath either tarp.

You can see depressions where several boats have landed in
the area of the orange tarps recently. Of course, in space
recently could mean years and years ago.

Ilane murmurs, "Looks like there's an EVA session in my future..."

She sets the ship to station-keeping several meters above the tarps and talks
to her cousin in an even, calm voice. "Listen, April...I'm going to have to go
out there and see what's underneath those tarps. What I'm going to need *you*
to do is to hang close to the airlock's outer door on a short tether. If
anything untoward should happen, I'm going to need you to reel me back in a
*hurry*."

Her chocolate-brown eyes look intently at April. "Never forget that out in
space, your tether is your *life*. Always keep an eye on it and make sure that
it's not getting snagged, and never, *ever* unhook your tether before you've
attached another one and made *absolutely* sure that it's secure! Without a
tether, you have nothing to push against and no way to move. And if you can't
move, you can't get back into the ship, and eventually you'd *die* out there in
the 'Big Empty'..."

there some normally stowed in the boat?]

Yes it is. The cartridges contain primer, oxidizer and
combustent, so they will work in a vacuum, under water, or
any place else. As for the firearm itself, all "modern"
firearms will work in a vacuum just fine unless they "freeze
up." Freezing up could be from lubricants outgassing and
hardening or from metal to metal contact adhesion. Contact
adhesion doesn't happen overnight and modern lubricants used
on modern firearms don't harden quickly in a vacuum either.
So, a firearm you find that has been in a vacuum for a few
weeks probably won't work until you disassemble, clean, lube
and reassemble it, and one that has been in vacuum for years
won't work at all.

April does as instructed. She shakes her head in the negative. "If I think of

Ilane nods and smiles as she sees April set herself up just as she asked her
to. She clips her own tether to the hook, and gives it a quick tug just to
make sure.

Given the short "drop" to the surface of the asteroid, Ilane just swivels
herself around the edge of the hatch and gently pushes herself towards the
asteroid's surface.

When she gets down there, she gingerly moves herself towards the "flat" tarp,
and, using her gun as a little "hand extension", lifts the edge of the tarp and
takes a look.

[PTGM: Is this an iron-based asteroid? Would the magnetic shoes on the vacc
suit help her keep her footing?]

The tether is securely tied off.

Ilane drifts down to the surface and lands with knees bent
to absorb the momentum.

OOC: No, this isn't an iron asteroid. It is a rocky one.
Gravity is very low here, but strong enough so that Ilane
might *not* be able to push off and not come back down.
Might, so better not chance it.

Ilane shuffles across the surface moving very slowly to
avoid building up momentum. When she reaches the tarp she
moves it up a bit with the pistol's barrel.

She can see the a metal edge. It looks like the collar to an
airlock. Beyond the metal she sees darkness, like a opening
or hole. The tarp is large enough to be covering a very
large hole, big enough for a ship to fly through.

"What the hell? Looks like the tarp is covering a *big* hole..."

Very carefully to avoid any dangerous momentum, Ilane takes her flashlight and
shines it into the hole.

"Don't worry, I'm being as careful as I know how to be. I'm going to shine my

The sides of the hole are smooth and appear to have been
worked with plasma torches to make them smooth and airtight.

If you move the light around to see the top of the hole you
will see where there are broken attachments to the metal
collar where something large was attached. You can see the
broken remains of what might have been seals around the rim
of the collar before they were broken.

It goes in a *long* way. So far that they light doesn't show
anything except smooth rock extending down toward the
interior of the asteroid. It occurs to you that the inside
of the asteroid might have been hollowed out and this might
have been an airlock...a very big airlock.

"Wow, it's *huge*, but the edges are smooth...I don't think it was caused by
any sort of weapons fire."

"Yup...I think I see a couple of busted seals. Definitely an ex-airlock."

She looks around for where the tarp is secured to for future reference, then
starts her very slow trek to the other tarp. "I'm going to check what's under
the other tarp now, April."

Ilane follows the same protocol as before, using the barrel of her bright blue
gun to lift the tarp first, and then shining her light underneath.

This is the entrance to an small air lock. Or the remains of
one.

It looks like the outer door has been blown off. Shining
your light down the hole reveals a small room with blast
marks all over it...obviously a ruined air lock because thee
inner door is also blown off. Beyond the hole where the
inner door used to be you can see what looks like a corridor
angling down into the the asteroid's interior. The floor is
shiny metal and the walls are smoothed rock.

Ilane says to her cousin, "There's a fragged airlock here, and the inner door
is breached too." She sighs. "I hope that the entire base hasn't been open to
vacuum all this time. That sort of thing wreaks *havoc* with equipment..."

The ex-dancer slowly gets up, and makes her way carefully towards the other
tarp's tiedowns. "I'm going to unhook the other tarp now, and then hopefully
we'll be able to dock." She unties the tarp from the hull and folds it over to
expose the docking collar, leaving a few loops of rope still tied so that it
doesn't drift away. Afterwards, she looks at the docking fittings with a
professional eye, and examines the huge "ex-airlock" underneath for soundness.

[PTGM: Does the collar seem intact enough in Ilane's opinion to attempt a
docking? Would it be safe to dock in the cavernous "ex-airlock" if Ilane so
chose, given its current condition? With main power in the asteroid offline,
would Ilane have to attach cables from the boat to the collar to supply power
so that they could dock? What's the proper procedure for getting the extra
fuel from the boat to the base's tanks?]

OOC: The collar might, or might not, safely hold the boat.

With the tarp pulled way back, you can shine your light
right down the hole. There isn't an inner door. The hole
extends 8, 10, or more meters through the hard rock and then
opens into a vast cavern inside. Playing the flash around
you can see flashes of metal in there...railings,
scaffolding, you can't be sure.

There doesn't appear to be any way to dock the boat in the
hole, but the hole is big so the boat could *easily* fly
through it into the cavernous interior.

Ilane continues her dialog with April as she inspects the collar and the
hole. "Hmm...I'm not so sure about this docking collar, April. It looks kinda
*filmsy*..." She moves down and shines the light down the throat of the
hole. "Wow...it's really *huge* in there. You know, we might be better off
just flying the boat right into the hole. There's nothing to dock it to per
se, but it might just be able to *sit* in there once we get the gravitics
online."

She then carefully gathers up the tarp and wraps it up, leaving it hanging
firmly against one of the tiedowns. That done, she says. "Okay April. I'm
heading back to the boat now..." Working up the tether as she has hundreds of
times before, Ilane eventually comes back up to the door. She looks at her
cousin with a smile and gives her a pat on the shoulder. "Good job April.
Maybe when we have time on the Mae Lee I'll teach you how to actually get
*around* in zero-G. It's a good talent to have..."

"For now though", Ilane says, still grinning, "this lesson will have to end
with showing you how to safely get back into an airlock." She grabs both sides
of the airlock doorway. "First, plant your feet in on the ledge of the lock,
get a nice, firm grip on the doorway and push yourself inside, like this."
Ilane demonstrates the little move. "Okay, go ahead and try it now...*don't*
unhook your tether yet though." Leaning out while hanging on to the doorway,
Ilane grabs the handle to the door with her right hand and swings it about two-
thirds shut. "Close the airlock door most of the way, and *then* reach around
and unhook your tether. While making sure that it doesn't get stuck in the
door, pull it in." She pulls in her long tether and grins. "I guess you can
see why they make vacc suits with magnetic feet now, huh?" After the tethers
are in, she grabs the door handle and shuts it. "Now, just shut the door,
secure it, and you're done!"

The belter's daughter gives the door an extra little tug just to make sure,
then heads over to the nearest enviromental control panel and starts to restore
the atmosphere inside the boat. Once the readings are all in the green, she
goes over the proper procedure for getting out of a vacc suit and shows April
how to properly stow it. Once they're both done, Ilane smiles and says, "So,
you've just had your *first* spacewalk, April! What did you think of it?"
