Ilane eases the boat over and nudges its docking clamp over a bar on one of the docking posts and clamps on. There is a faint "Clump" heard inside the ship from the action of the boat's clamp biting down on the docking bar. The boat is securely held in place here against the ledge of rock. You are close enough now to see that there is metal mesh laid atop the rock of the ledge, it looks like the catwalks that cross the cavern and go around it's sides against the rock faces. To your right you can see a pair of umbillicals retracted up against the walls of the rooms cut into the rock. One of the umbilical is a meter across, the other is almost three across. From your experience you expect the smaller umbilical to house power and life support connections and the larger to be an airtight passage that can be connected to a ship's airlock. Sensors show low, but definitely above background, IR power levels coming from the far set of rooms on the other side of the cavern from where you docked. There are also low, but higher than background, IR power levels coming from the rooms to your right. In both cases the readings are diffuse, not point sources. IOW's the readings don't look like they are signs of *beings* in here, more like that there are active power sources providing a little heat in those areas. Sensors also show that the cavern is in hard vacuum. From a quick look around the layout, though, our asteroid miner's daughter thinks the interior once was air tight and pressurized...and probably could be made so again without *too* much work. You don't see any obvious holes in the walls of the "rooms" and there is a closed hatch on the side of one near where you docked. The hatch looks like an outer airlock hatch on a ship...or any of dozens of similar hatches Ilane has seen on asteroid habitats. If you want to explore you are going to have to EVA again. It should be relatively safe in here, though, no chance of just floating away, as long as you stay tethered to something and move carefully. Eris AKU GM

The air in the boat is pumped into the tanks and the hatch is opened. Ilane and April slow leave the boat using the tethers. They discover their magnetic boots work well on the metal mesh covering the ledge. Both see grav modules under the mesh between it and the rock ledge. If power can be directed to those modules you'd have gravity here. Ilane clumps over to the hatch on the side of the wall, and plugs her a cable from her suit into a socket on it. Readings start coming up on her heads up display inside her helmet. The airlock's outer hatch is unlocked and there is zero pressure inside it. The inner hatch is dogged shut and there is normal air pressure beyond it. There isn't power to either hatch door, so they will need to be opened manually. Removing the cable from the socket, she braces her boots on the mesh surface and turns the hatch's wheel. She knows that if it has been exposed to vacuum too long there will be metal to metal bonding and it will be hard, or impossible to turn. The wheel turns easily. It hasn't been exposed to vacuum all that long, then. With the hatch open she and April can see the airlock in front of them is 2 meters wide and 3 meters deep. There are empty racks where vacc suits could be hung. Otherwise the lock is empty. The inner air lock door is closed. Eris AKU GM

Of course, *how* to do it is a bit more tricky. You can connect the boat to the small umbillical, and see if you can feed power from it to the asteroid's systems. You might also be able to check any computers that here, but powered down. >> Ilane clumps over to the hatch on the side of the wall, >> and plugs her a cable from her suit into a socket on >> it. There isn't enough power being radiated in there to do much more than keep oxygen in the atmosphere from freezing out. Eris AKU GM

The boat's standard connectors fits the umbilical's standard connectors, so it all goes smoothly with April's assistance. Next, you go to the boat's controls and feed power to the asteroid's systems. You go slowly to make sure it works...and it does work! April is with the fusion engine and electrical generator in the back of the boat making sure it is not having a problem with the heavier load being put on it. She watches the numbers on the small console back there and notes that the power level rises slowly then levels off at 97%. >> [PTGM: How many days endurance does this ship boat's >> power plant have, at maximum output?] As posted earlier, you have over two weeks at maximum output, so you should be fine here as long as you only stay a day or two then head back. > [PTGM: Did the procedure go okay? What systems on the > base did Ilane manage to get online?] Ilane, starts trying to access the controls of the systems on the asteroid. She finds that she can't. She can get a brief report out of them, but the base's computer won't allow her to give it any other orders remotely. She'll have to go to it and work on a console there. The report Ilane gets is: 1. Life Support in stand by mode in Sections A and B. 2. Life Support reports hull breech and complete shutdown in Section C. 3. Power Systems: Fusion engine shut down with no reported faults; Power Cell standby power at 15% providing minimum power to Life Support and Computer Systems. External power source detected, awaiting directions on its use. 4. Gravity Systems, off line, no reported faults. 5. Security System, off line, faults reported. 6. Computer Systems active, but under low power. It looks like everything except Life Support in Section C and the Security Systems can be brought online without doing any repairs if you can get the base's Computer to accept directions from you. You'll need to do some work on Section C (whatever that is) to repair the hull breech before you can restore life support to that. You'll also have to diagnose the faults and make repairs to the Security Systems before they can be brought online. Eris AKU GM

It's actually better than she thought. She relays the information to April and then says, "The ship's computer won't let me remote in, so I've got to head down the computer room and enter my commands there. Would you come with me? I'm no computer expert myself, and plus it's a lot safer if we stay together as much as possible." She then tries to call up a base schematic from the remote terminal. OOC: You probably guessed it was going to come to this. The logical place for the computer room is behind that airlock, so that's where you go. You both enter the airlock, close the hatch behind you and cycle it. Your vacc suit sensors show normal air pressure in the lock, and the inner hatch's wheel now turns easily. With the hatch now unlocked, you step inside. It is very dark in here, but your suit lights show that there is a corridor ahead of you. The deck is more metal mesh with grav modules under it. A few meters ahead there is a doorway to the left and another to the right. Your suit sensors show the temperature in here is -163 degrees Celsius. There is a light dusting of a white powdery substances on the surfaces of the corridor. As you step forward the white powder on the mesh deck plating puffs into small white clouds that dissipate quickly into the frigid atmosphere. A few steps down the corridor and you can see into the rooms on either side. You glance to either side. To your left is what appears to be a control room. There are several control consoles, the sort you can find on starships, and the big box in the back of the room with a terminal next to it is obviously a computer. To your right is a room with tables, chairs, a sofa and what looks like a small galley. You can see where something in here was ripped from the wall and removed leaving wires dangling. Eris AKU GM

Ilane can't link in from her suit, but there is a working keyboard, and once Ilane starts working she discovers that she can get access. The computer doesn't appear to have any security stopping anyone from accessing the systems...no password required...she goes right into the main menu with no problem at all. As best as she can with her limited computer skills, Ilane adds some basic security to the system. > From the menu here, Ilane can control life support, monitor > the base's power and security systems. First, Ilane makes a quick tally of the power requirements of each system and compares them to the current output of the boat's power plant. Then, she begins to allocate power, first to gravitics. She eases the power level up slowly, knowing full well that a *sudden* return of gravitation could potentially do a *lot* of damage. Next, she uses a slice of the output for shipboard lighting, and another two power slices for life support in the section they're currently in, and then for the other undamaged section. She also sees if she can get any diagnostic data from the base's power plant, and checks to see if there's any fuel still left in any of the tanks. Once Ilane is done with all that, she notes what power she has left to use from the boat (if any), and brings up the long-awaited ship's schematic. The tall woman searches the deckplans to see if she can locate the base's primary power plant. The cousins can feel the gravity slowly coming back under them. Their suit sensors show the atmosphere is slowly warming, and although they can't hear it through their suits, there is a humm coming from ventilator shifts as warm air begins to circulate into the habitat as cold air is pulled out, processed and warmed before being circulated back. The lighting flickers then comes on. The overhead lights in the control room were left on and all come back on. Across the hall you *hear* (even through the suits) a bang and April sees sparks flying from that room followed by white smoke. Ilane starts a diagnostic running on the power plant. It will take a minute before it is finished. While it is running she checks the power she has and sees she's maxed the power out from the boat. It's enough for now, but it isn't quite enough to completely power up all the systems. Then the diagnostic of the power plant finishes and it flashes up in a window on the screen. There is a fusion plant here, *and* it looks to be in working condition. It is accessible from where you are by the catwalks going across the cavern. Section C appears to be the cavern itself where the boat is now docked. Looking out on the cavern from the large window in the control room you think a large ship, maybe two could dock in there. > [PTGM: How long would the fuel that we brought with us > power the base's power plant, at an output sufficient to > maintain life support, gravitics, commo, lighting and > computers? This module could supply life support for the two air-tight sections for months with only you two here. Eris AKU GM

Ilane looks at the PLSM approvingly. She looks back at April. "It seems we'll be arriving on the Mae Lee 'bearing gifts'. This PLSM's bearly used...*more* than enough to sustain us while we're here. Once you get inside you're going to have to determine *if* the power plant can be brought online. If it's dead cold, and it seems to be from the report, you'll need to "kick start" it. That can be done with stored power from capacitors that will be there (they may not be charged though), with an "explosive power cartridge" (if there are any in there...unlikely), or from power from the boat. Power from the boat is your best bet, but you'll either need to charge up the capacitors with it (taking time) or cut power to other system and direct it to the power plant back here. April *can* monitor systems, especially if you tell her what to be looking for. Eris AKU GM

You should drop into the Mark system long about 270, so.... ....if they stick around the asteroid a couple of days they could still be there as you enter the system. Of course, a starsystem is a big place and the odds of you arriving near that particular asteroid are pretty slim. Eris AKU GM

Yes, but the odds of us having Arvitis take a look at it with sensors are pretty high, and if it's lit up by having the power plant on, they'll get a visit from the Patrol toot sweet! > -- "Wherever you go, there you are." - B. Ilane and April know when the Mae Lee is due, so they'll be sure to try to get in touch with you sometime around 270. :)] -- Bob K.
