Mae Lee: 0997.264: Shawn Snoops

The next morning, Shawn wakes early and makes his way down
to the laboratory. It is one of the places where he has
determined that there is a chance to overhear anything
happening in the gardens above.

The door to the lab is closed, as it should be, and opens to
his handprint. Inside the lights are on and he sees Arvitis
sitting in a chair with a pair of headphones on. He is
tinkering with a collection of parts at a workbench. The
headphones have a wire running from them to a breadboarded
device sitting on one corner of the workbench. From the
breadboarded device a pair of wires lead up to some sort of
circular metal disk attached to the wall somehow or other.

Arvitis is oblivious to Shawn's entry behind him, and
continues to bob his head and hum off key as he looks at
small parts through a magnifying glass and make notes in a
battered old black notebook.

Shawn stopped in his tracks. He didn't know Arvitis put in so many
hours. He did some spacial calculations and tried to determine if he
was, as Shawn began to suspect, a far second in the liust of people
that wanted to hear more of Mira. He stepped in and closed the door and
relocked it.

OOC: I don't want to run this off-list, Terry, so Suz may
know, but Mira does not.

Mira *should* be working in her gardens at this time, yes.

Arvitis doesn't show any signs that he is aware that Shawn
has entered the room.

OOC: Spacial, not time. Shawn wants to know if the plate with the
headphones is in a likely area to listen in on Mira.

Shawn walked over by the table and waved at Arvitis once he was in the
field of vision.

Could be. You aren't sure.

He made motion to take off the head phones.

When he can be sure he is heard, "What are you listening to?"

Arvitis looks up blankly. You repeat it louder and he pulls
one side of the headphones up and says, "Music, and Mira
singing. I've been coming down here since the second day of
jump coming out here. She's regular like clockwork."

"Maybe. Maybe not. A collection might make a great gift later, though.
As a gift, we could put a collection of them together and if we asked
discretly, we could find out. I'll take charge of that, if you like. In
any case, she's really good so if you would record some for me, I would
really appreciate it and I will keep it under my hat till we know how
she feels about it. Will you do that for me?"

"Well..." Arvitis muses a second and then nods, "I don't see
why not? I'll set up a recorder tomorrow if you want."

"I was just playing with my portable densitometer and picked
up vibrations in the hull plate there, so I had to check it
out." he shrugs and adds, "I just enjoy the music. Hadn't

Shawn nodded.

"She is very good. I look forward to listening to more myself. Thank
you, Arvitis. I'll get them from you during the days, then. I'll let
you get back to your work."

Shawn exited with a wave and made his way outside the hydo lab. If her
could hear well enough, he pulled up a spot of deck to listen.

"Sure." Arvitis turns back to what he was doing and
dismisses Shawn from his mind.

Shawn plops down on the deck outside the hydro lab and
listens. Not much later, Mira's wrist watch starts to beep
at her alerting her that it is time to go get changed and
meet Shawn down in the gym.

He tried to isolate what seemed so familiar about her voice.

You don't have a lot of luck with that. To you, Mira's
singing seems familar...like you've heard a similar voice,
similar stylings, on a record somewhere or other, but you
can't put your finger on it.

Shawn shrugged and rose to his feet. Perhaps he should ask that
recording lady once he has a sample. All he could tell was that she
sounded good and familiar.

He stepped over to the door and keyed it open.

Mira's voice cuts off as she is startled by the door opening before she
keys it.

He grinned.

"Just checking! We both know you can get a bit, shall we say, focused."

She looks indignant and declares, "Me? Never!"

And marches past, pushing if necessary, but after she's a couple steps past
she looks over her shoulder grinning and winks, calling, "I'll be down
after I get into my skins."

She disappears into her stateroom and changes into an outfit much the same
as the day before save it is in two shades of sapphire blue, light and
dark. She's down to the gym within minutes.

Shawn made his way down to the gym with his head shaking.

He started setting up and smiled at her when she arrived.

"So, will I ever get any better?"

"Of course you will," she replies, "If you keep playing. Lots of potential
gets wasted at all manner of things just because people give up and never
hone their natural gifts. They only see today's failures and not tomorrow's
promises."

She grins over at him, "Of course, I've also seen people with absolutely no
gift for something sink their teeth into it and refuse to let go. As long
as they are enjoying what they do and it doesn't hurt anyone else, there is
no harm in it. Of course, when they are med students..." she shakes her
head, "But I digress just a touch. *You* will improve. How much is entirely
up to you."

"As for me, you're really making me work and that can only mean good things
for my game, so you won't find me begging off to avoid chasing your wild
shots all over and one day you're going to surprise me because I'll be
expecting wild and you'll give me controlled," She grins, "You serve off."

He laughed.

"I've seen the same sort of thing for people that wanted to learn how
to pilot or plot a course into jump space. Letting little things like
suns and planets get in the way. Time will tell."

He lined up for the serve.

"By the way, I don't know if I emphasized it enough yesterday but you

She crosses her arms and watches the ball, prepared to duck if it actually
comes her way.

"Shawn Smith! Are you trying to gain a competitive edge by distracting me?"
She says with a mock show of temper, "Cause I'm warning you, even going on
about my singing isn't going to work. I play better when I'm irritated.
Focus all that heated energy into the ball and I won't remember to go easy
on you!"

She does a deftly maneuvered flip to grab the ball out of mid air, landing
on a disk opposite where she started, bouncing and flipping back to where
she started. She gives a soft throw to Shawn, "Here, serve again."

"As for my singing... my best friend growing up was Galina Zorn's little
sister, so I am well aware of what a singer should be. She always told me I
had a good voice, but I was her little sister's best friend and one of the
few that didn't drive her to absolute distraction, in fact, I tended to run
interference, so I know she was just being kind. But I do enjoy singing
when no one else is around."

"Well, as they say, I don't know art but I know what I like and I like
your singing. I don't think she was just being kind. I think she was
being honest with you."

He grinned at her irreverantly. "I think I'll have to slip down
sometime and get another listen. That and you cut a nice picture in
your happy work zone so your not hard on the eyes either."

"I'll stop the minute I see you." She says as she concentrates on the ball
and her game play. She isn't threatening or warning. She just says it. A
simple matter of fact as if she'd just said that she was wearing blue or
that there is iron in blood. Then she grins after sending the ball spinning
back, "And if I spot you, I'm likely to put you to work down there. I need
to work on Ricardo for a budget for the 'ponics. I mean an improvements
budget over and above just keeping it running. It could be something really
amazing given the right touches."

He shrugged.

"If you need help, then I don't have an objection to helping out. I
might even be helpful enough to warrent a song later on. When you know
me better."

He smacked the ball back at the target.

"I won't sing in front of my own mother, Shawn." She replies as she flips
to intercept the shot.

He scrambled to get into position for *some* kind of return.

"This might be too personal, so feel free to tell me to lay off, but
why? You really do have a great voice."

She kills the return, a point winning shot she wouldn't have been able to
stop or return had she been receiving and in position. She flips and
catches the ball and gives him a moderate serve.

"Growing up, I watched all manner of gals and guys try to impress Galina
with their voices, joining her in song uninvited while she practiced or
breaking into song just for no reason in her presence. Some were even good.
I just got in the habit of not foisting myself on anyone. She only caught
me singing once or twice and I was always terribly embarrassed by the
attention she paid just because I was her sister's best friend."

With a few decades of practice and hiring someone to run over her with
a grav loader, he knew he could be in her skill range. He grinned and
shrugged. Only the macho needed to win at everything. It was fun
anyway.

He tried to hit the ball with his hand moving at an angle to impart
some spin *after* it hit the target. The ball, instead, missed the
target all together. He shook his head. Practice.

"Well, I am certainly not the one to tell you that you don't need to be
shy about something you love." He waved his hand. "Forget I said that.
Say instead that your thoughts and feelings certainly were valid. Out
of respect for your friend's sister, whose name probably should mean
something to me, you kept your music private."

He finally caught up with the ball and smacked it back into play.

"I would tend to believe that she would not have complimented you
merely because you were friends with her sister. She doesn't sound so
shallow, from the little you have said. It sounds more as though she
respected your curtesy and gave you her honest opinion."

"In any case, you have moved on as have she and your friend. If she had
been offended, which I am sure she was not, muzzling yourself does her
no benifit now."

"Perhaps."

"Actually, I'm still in touch with both of them, though not nearly as often
as I'd like. I'll play you some of her music later, if you'd like. Or just
lend you some. I haven't been able to replace most of what I lost, though.
I used to have recordings that 'didn't exist'," he can hear the quotations,
"The sort of thing I could make a fortune selling to the wrong sorts of
people. She has great wit and knows this huge collection of really bawdy
songs suitable for the seedy side of any startown you've ever been to and
that would *never* mesh with her public persona. And however much they play
her as elegant and gracious, poised and charitable, they don't even begin
to capture the reality. I'd love to have her aboard for a jump or two to
meet all of you. I haven't heard back from her since my last tri-d to her.
Of course, I sent it after our first couple of jumps, so she probably
doesn't even have it yet. It always goes to her mangler and then on to her
wherever he can set things to intercept her."

"Lucky you! I haven't seen anyone I know more than in passing in a
long, long time. I'd like to listen to some of her work so thank you. I
wish we could meet her, too." He grinned. "She might even convince you
that you shouldn't hide that pretty voice in closed rooms. Still, since
you are not around them why continue to not sing? Surely your friend
wouldn't want that."

"I do sing." She replies grinning, "Every morning. Now hush before I decide

"Alright!" He threw out his hands in mock surrender. "I'll hush. For
now."

He threw himself into learning what she was teaching him. Time for
planning and plotting later.

Mira keeps singing as she finishes up what she's working on, completely
oblivious to the shameful invasion of her supposed privacy currently going
on beneath her and outside the door. She shuts down the sound system as she
heads for the door, her voice trailing on, finishing the last stanza as she
exits.
