997.273.Afternoon: Mira's Afternoon

While Mira is out shopping her comm rings.

"Mira?" Jac's voice comes over the comm when she answers,
"Mira, I've been thinking about all of this and I made a
couple of calls to members of my club and asked a few
discreet questions."

"Anyway, I found out that Geoffrey, Lord Hayes, is hosting a
party tonight at his country estate outside the city. It's a
big charity affair and I *know* I could get invitations for
any, or all, of us." Jac says, "Are you up to a party this
evening?"

"If Geof is involved in this, it might be useful for some of
you to actually met him." Jac says.

"OTOH, if he we were to prove that he *is* involved in this,
I might shoot the bastard on sight!" he stops and draws a
breath, "Sorry, for my language, but murder and treason make
me a bit upset."

"Do you think I should mention it to Captain O'Brien?"

"Given our propensity as a group to get in trouble?" She asks in a teasing
voice, "Certainly you should. At the very least, you and I can attend. How
dressy?"

"Quite dressy." he replies, "Tuxedo and evening dresses,
dressy. It's the Prada Charity Ball, one of the biggest
events of the year. Ballroom dancing, social chit chat,
mingling with the rich and powerful...that sort of thing. I
should think the crew's dress uniforms would do for the men,
the Space Patrol and Navy officers will be in uniform, but
*all* the women will be in formal gowns, I should think."

She smiles, "Lovely. Definitely suggest that Ricardo should attend with one
of our lovely cousins on his arm. I'd love to see him forced to wear a tux."

Mira mentally adjusts to having to go find a formal gown suitable to being
seen on Jac's arm. She sighs. Her bank account was going to take a serious hit.

No, wait. She could wear that. It was copied, but never duplicated and she
had an original and knew how to wear it. Ok, and she had the right shoes,
not that shoes *should* be worn with the gown, but some concessions could
be made. She didn't need anything else, except well styled hair, makeup
and such. She wanders over to the mall directory term and looks for a full
service salon. She selects shampoo, trim and style, facial, manicure,
pedicure and makeup. With a rare fit of self-indulgence, she selects a full
hour massage. If she was going to be pampered, she might as well go all out.

"Jamie and Jessica's Salon" jumps out at Mira for some reason and she is
able to schedule an appointment for a complete *do* this afternoon. Mira
will be tied up in her full treatment for most of the afternoon. Her
plants and other supplies will be delivered to the ship, and will arrive
before she does.

Mira has the full treatment, and is feeling like a million credits as
she leaves the salon.

Back aboard the ship, she heads for Jac's cabin as she approaches she
hears...

> Jac says, "So do we try the ruse to get a look at the boarding

Looking around the door frame she sees Jac leaning back at his desk.
Ricardo is perched on one corner of the desk. Woof and Cory are also
standing inside the room. The four men appear to be planning something.

"Mira!" Jac exclaims leaning forward and smiling broadly, "You
look....fantastic!"

Mira's smile radiates the pleasure from his words, "Thank you, Jac. I had a
rather pleasant afternoon."

"The four of you look to be up to no good. What are you plotting?"

Jac stands and says, "Let me get you a chair."

He proceeds to do just that. It's a folding chair that he takes off the
wall, but it's a chair none the less.

"Captain, have you given any more thought to who you're going to be
escorting to the ball tonight?" Jac asks but he's looking at Mira.

She keeps eye contact with him as she moves to let him seat her, even as

Standing off to one side April watches it all. Does she feel left out
because she wasn't introduced? Does she feel angry that Jac got Mira a
chair and didn't get her one? We wait with baited breath to find out.

chuckle-chuckle

By this time April has quietly taken a seat off to the side and has been
listening attentively to the discussion. Who did she need to be introduced
to? She was already introduced to the cousins. Why would she be angry if Jac
got Mira a chair? She was already in the room. So April still sits quietly
to the side observing and listening.

Cory leans around grabs Ricardo's hand and stars into his eyes for a second.
Then his shoulders melt with faked emotion, a slight sigh of pleasure escapes
his lips as he reluctantly releases his hand and wilts back into his seat.
With a smirk, he asks "Can you two put the hormones on hold for a few? Then I
promise to help you move into the other's room. Matter of fact if Mira is
moving, I'm sure I can get all the crew to help; everyone is wondering what
type of novelties she might have." and with the last the smirk changes to a
leer.

Cory hits the comm "Arvitis, do you have a map of the landing pads up there on
the bridge?"

Kelly set his cup down on the counter with a thump. The hot liquid
sluices onto the counter, but he doesn't notice. He turns and takes two
steps to Cory's side. The former CPO looks every bit the part, and his

Cory notes the tone of voice looks at him then looks at the floor as if being
meak. He then bursts into song :
"
Dear kindly Sergeant Krupke,
You gotta understand,
It's just our bringin' up-ke
That gets us out of hand.
Our mothers all are junkies,
Our fathers all are drunks.
Golly Moses, natcherly we're punks!

Gee, Officer Krupke, we're very upset;
We never had the love that ev'ry child oughta get.
We ain't no delinquents,
We're misunderstood.
Deep down inside us there is good!

There is good!

There is good, there is good,
There is untapped good!
Like inside, the worst of us is good!"

Cory turns as if he's another person and using a deeper voice "That's a
touchin' good story. "

Then back to the original voice "Lemme tell it to the world!"

Deeper voice "Just tell it to the judge."

Original voice"
Dear kindly Judge, your Honor,
My parents treat me rough.
With all their marijuana,
They won't give me a puff.
They didn't wanna have me,
But somehow I was had.
Leapin' lizards! That's why I'm so bad!"

Voice of authority " Right!

Officer Krupke, you're really a square;
This boy don't need a judge, he needs an analyst's care!
It's just his neurosis that oughta be curbed.
He's psychologic'ly disturbed! "

Original Voice"
I'm disturbed!

We're disturbed, we're disturbed,
We're the most disturbed,
Like we're psychologic'ly disturbed."

Voice of authority "In the opinion on this court, this child is depraved on
account he ain't had a normal home."

Original voice" Hey, I'm depraved on account I'm deprived."

Voice of authority "So take him to a headshrinker."

Original Voice"
My father is a bastard,
My ma's an S.O.B.
My grandpa's always plastered,
My grandma pushes tea.
My sister wears a mustache,
My brother wears a dress.
Goodness gracious, that's why I'm a mess! "

Squeeky voice with a Zho accent" Yes!
Officer Krupke, you're really a slob.
This boy don't need a doctor, just a good honest job.
Society's played him a terrible trick,
And sociologic'ly he's sick! "

Original voice"
I am sick!

We are sick, we are sick,
We are sick, sick, sick,
Like we're sociologically sick!"

Zho voice" In my opinion, this child don't need to have his head shrunk at
all. Juvenile delinquency is purely a social disease!"

Original Voice" Hey, I got a social disease! "

Zho "So take him to a social worker!"

Original Voice"
Dear kindly social worker,
They say go earn a buck.
Like be a soda jerker,
Which means like be a schumck.
It's not I'm anti-social,
I'm only anti-work.
Gloryosky! That's why I'm a jerk!"

Female Voice "
Eek!
Officer Krupke, you've done it again.
This boy don't need a job, he needs a year in the pen.
It ain't just a question of misunderstood;
Deep down inside him, he's no good!"

Original Voice"
I'm no good!

We're no good, we're no good!
We're no earthly good,
Like the best of us is no damn good! "

Voice of authority"
The trouble is he's crazy."

Zho voice"
The trouble is he drinks. "

Femal voice"
The trouble is he's lazy."

Deep voice"
The trouble is he stinks."

Zho voice"
The trouble is he's growing. "

Female voice"
The trouble is he's grown."

Original voice"
Krupke, we got troubles of our own!

Gee, Officer Krupke,
We're down on our knees,
'Cause no one wants a fellow with a social disease.
Gee, Officer Krupke,
What are we to do?
Gee, Officer Krupke,
Krup you! "

Cory stops slightly out of breath and Bows to Jac "Your perfect foil sir"

They are up forward in Jac's cabin, but you can walk up there just as
easily...looking for the Captain to tell him you've finished with most
of your pre-jump preparations...and you do!

Jac says, "Ilane or Lysia. April will be with Cory on their mission.
Lysia would be the obvious choice, as this is her home planet, and her
family is fairly well known. However, having Lysia there could draw more
attention than you might want for the very reasons she is the obvious
choice."

She looks up at the man in question, "Is this something worth staying for?"

Cory shivers and rubs his arms briskly as if caught in a blizzard.

Jac smiles but doesn't say anything.

"An idea to find out which ship the child was taken aboard." Jac says.

"A map?" he replies, "No, but I can pull one up on the screen. I'll pipe
it down to the terminal in Jac's cabin. Just pull up Mark Starport Map
from the directory."

Woof watches her. She sits. Woof thinks, "Lucky devil."

"I'll suggest that Captain O'Brien attend." Jac replies, "I think he
should. Mira, Ricardo is coming down the corridor now. I'll talk to him
and call you back."

He pauses then says, "I've missed you today...after yesterday...well,
I'm missing you."

"Gotta go!" he says hurriedly and she hears him call out "Ricardo!"
before the line goes dead.

Mira feels that something warm in the pit of her stomach again but just as
she's about to say something beyond the light that came into her eyes and
the smile that curved her lips, he...

She slips the comm back into her bag and whistles happily as she heads to
the salon. Life was looking up.
