Jac steps aboard the /Mae Lee/ and walks to the crew's quarters area. He is looking for the Captain. He spies Ricardo moving down the corridor and calls out, "Captain!" When Ricardo turns he sees Jac dressed in black evening clothes, with a black top hat on his head and a ceremonial short sword sheathed at his waist. Across Jac's white shirt front is a dark red sash holding several small medals and ribbons. A light-weight black cape is draped over his shoulders and held there by a short silver chain. He looks the very image of a nobleman. "I left Woof with his friend. They will transact the business and Woof will return with what we need later." Jac says, "It went very well, I think." "For this evening, I've ordered two limousines and purchased the tickets to the Charity Ball this evening." Jac hands Ricardo two tickets, then glances at his wrist and adds, "Your limo will arrive for you and your companion in about 40 minutes." "Sianna Hasta-Rur and I shall be traveling in a separate limousine." Jac says smiling. "I hope you enjoy your evening Captain." Jac touches the brim of his hat with a finger and retires back down the corridor toward Mira's cabin.Mira hears a tap on her cabin door, followed by Jac's voice, "Sianna? Mira? Are you ready?" >Mira hears a tap on her cabin door, followed by Jac's >voice, "Sianna? Mira? Are you ready?" It wouldn't have mattered if she'd been restlessly pacing the floor waiting for him instead of carefully finishing the final wrapping of her dress. Either way the response would have been precisely the same. "Just a moment, Lord Woodbridge," Mira says with smile as she finishes the final tuck. Then she moves to her makeup table and picks up the tiniest bottle in the lot. A tiny dab of perfume, behind each ear and at her wrists and a gentle scent teasing with hints of flowers, vanilla and spice, clings to her delicately. She twirls around in front of the mirror, studying the effect. Her makeup was still flawless, her hair, elaborately pinned in an up-do, with hanging curls, twists and braids looped and held in place by invisible means, and the gown. Gown. It was a single piece of fabric of no particular cut, woven of a silk made by some absolutely revolting looking cross between a worm and a spider indigenous to a single large island on a single world. Hers was an antique gold that shimmered with hints of the green in her eyes. The fabric draped in a manner unduplicated by synthetic fabrics, clinging to the body, even as it appeared to drape loosely. She wore it in an elegant style, gathered and held without any obvious means at both shoulders, the fabric hanging down and draping across her breasts in a loose 'X', leaving just enough cleavage to be tantalizing without being brazen in front, and trailing as a barely sweeps the ground train in back.. The fabric in between wound in mystical fashion, no obvious seams, zippers, clasps or the like in place anywhere, to leave one leg bare nearly to the point of her hip, while the rest covered, clung and draped. The fabric, with its fantastic ability to appear casually draped while still clinging to a woman's curves had been made famous by Galina Zorn and many attempts had been made to capture the same look, to little avail. The designers didn't understand the philosophy behind it and added diamond clasps and any number of 'enhancements' even as they failed to capture the basic nature of the fabric. Most agreed that Galina alone could wear the style, but they'd never been to the island. And they didn't understand the principals behind it. Mira's only concession was to wear shoes and carry her bag, a slightly dressier one for the occasion, to be certain, but she didn't go anywhere without her med kit. No jewels adorned her ears, neck, arms or fingers. It simply wasn't necessary to highlight a woman's beauty further. Satisfied that all was in place, she opens the door, throwing it wide and standing there. "Good evening, Jac," She says softly. Mira

"As always...." he adds with a slight blush, "Beautiful as always." Jac takes her hand and steps back holding it up, "That is a lovely dress." He takes a deep breath and says, "You, um, it, um...it does you justice." Then he seems to recover some of his aplomb and says as he loops Mira's arm under his and starts walking at her side toward the forward hatch, "Our ride awaits outside. I thought we would drop by Maison D'argent for appetizers before the Ball. There will be canapés and drinks there, but nothing in the way of a meal. If you feel like it afterwards perhaps we will drop by a late night cafe for a bite to eat?" Eris AKU

"Better than I thought it would, actually." Jac says with a small chuckle, "Si Coleman seemed to be impressed by *me*. He needs to learn not to judge a book by it's cover. I chatted him up a bit, and then Woof took over. I didn't realize Woof was that smooth of a talker. He had *me* half convinced that this whole thing was to make sure some Lady's lover really did get on that ship and fly out of her life before her indiscretions ruined her marriage." Jac stops and opens the hatch for Mira and escorts her down the gangway toward the waiting limo. The sun has just gone down and the Starport's lights are coming up. The night air is warm and sultry, and smells of chemicals and ozone wafting across the tarmac from the port's huge fuel and chemical holding tanks. An increasingly loud humming sound from the south signals the arrival of another ship descending over the bay toward the port. Looking out you can see lights coming on along the streets bordering the Starport, the bright flashing neon lights of the cafes and bars luring spacemen and locals as well as the white street lights lining the streets. Parked below the gangway is a long black limousine with a uniformed driver standing beside it. The driver and limo shimmer in the starport lights from the heated air still rising up from the black tarmac. As the pair approach the limo the drive says as he opens the door to the back seat, "Good evening Sir Jac, Sianna. My name is Nicholas and it is my pleasure to be your driver this evening." Eris AKU

Jac says, "I've heard of Kadtries Day, but I never knew the story behind it. I always thought it was just Argent's local version of the Spring festival." The limo pulls to a stop outside a restaurant. There aren't bright neon lights along this street. It looks more upscale than that. A doorman opens the door, Jac exits and holds out his hand to help Mira out. He turns to the driver and says, "It should be about and hour Nicholas." As the limo pulls away, the doorman holds the door open for Mira and Jac. He allows her to enter first, and then he steps forward to walk beside her up to the front desk. Behind the desk a man dressed in evening clothes is talking with a couple." "It will be at least an hour, if you would care to wait in the lounge." he looks up as that couple moves away and says with a broad smile, "Good evening, Lord Woodbridge." "Evening, Paul." Jac says, "I should have a reservation." "Of course! the Maite'd replies, "We will always have your table available for you." He motions for an assistant to take his place and moves to escort you to the table himself, "It has been much too long since we had the pleasure of serving any of your family." "I've been away." Jac says, "Oh, and may I introduce Doctor Mira Hasta-Rur?" "Good evening, "'Sianna Doctor." Paul gives Mira a slight bow, "May I say how honored we are to have you at our little restaurant tonight." Turning to Mira Jac says, "Mira, Paul's sister is the head chef here. She was trained by Chef David." "Yes, *that* Chef David, Lysia and Morgana's mother." Jac chuckles, "Morgana and Erma were star pupils in their day, but Erma is the Master of Chef's today." "You are too kind." Paul says, "But I will be sure to let Erma know you are here, Sir Jac. Jac smiles and says, "Yes, tell Erma hello from me." Jac holds Mira's chair back for her, then allows Paul to hold his chair for him. Mira sees an older man dressed as a waiter step up to the table. "Good evening Kendall." Jac says to the waiter, "We are going to the charity ball later, so we'll only have something light before hand." Jac looks over at Mira for confirmation, "Yes?" Turning back to Kendall Jac says, "I think I'll leave it all in yours and Chef Erma's hands." "As you wish, Sir Jac." Kendall gives a short bow and says, "May I suggest the Goujonnette of John Dory. The fish is pan fried, crispy, and served with a fig and pistacchio galette, finocchio and thinly sliced proscuitto. The sauce is a light fish stock infused with kelp. With a nice white? Jac smiles then turns back to Kendall and says, "Yes, it sounds delightful. We are in your hands." Kendall bows and as he withdraws a pair of young men arrive bearing dinner rolls, glasses and water. The restaurant is dimly lighted, but you can see that there are real paintings hanging on the walls, and that the furnishings are expensive. There is soft music playing in the background and the conversations around the room are very quiet. Mira can't see any silencers, but it wouldn't surprise her if the tables were protected from anyone overhearing with quiet fields. Jac chats with Mira about his planet. He tells her about the black sanded beaches on the Doublet Islands where brightly colored fish swim in the clear blue waters, and the ski slopes on Mount Antonio where water pools are heated with steam rising from deep inside the mountain dot the land while deep snow covers the ground only a few feet away. The sommelier arrives pushing a cart with a bottle of wine in a silver bucket filled with ice and serves a small glass to Jac who tastes it and nods. He then serves glasses to both Mira and Jac. The wine is very pale and cold, and it has a crisp, dry taste. Your meal arrives just a minute later. The fish is crispy and golden and is lying half on a small pastry shaped like a crescent moon. Beside the fish and pastry sliced white rounds alternate with thin round slices of pink ham are arranged like a hand of cards resting on dark green curly leaves. A light green sauce has been drizzled over the fish and tart. The white rounds are the finocchio, blanched but still crunchy to the bite, and with a hint of licorice. The ham is salty and sweet. The green leaves are lightly blanched and also taste of licorice and anise. The tart crust is flaky and has sweet minced fig and pistachio nut in it's center. The fish is a small white fleshed boneless fillet. Its taste is light, but the sauce gives it the fresh taste of a sea breeze. "This is good." Jac says after sampling the food, "I'll have to send a special thanks to Erma before we go." Eris AKU GM

I didn't see you approaching." "I can see that." she says with a twinkle in her eye. "The food is just wonderful, tonight, Erma." Jac says to her, "May I introduce, my good friend, Sianna Mira Hasta-Rur to you?" "Mira, this is Chef Erma Tolay. The best frantz chef on all of Mark." Jac says smiling and releasing Mira's hand. "Perhaps, *one* of the better chefs, but surely not *the* best." Erma chuckles and holds out her hand to Mira, "A pleasure Sianna. Jac chuckles and says putting both hands on his chest while he looks at Erma, "But who is protect *me* from her wit and charm." Looking back at Mira, "And her beauty." "Ah, you, Sir Jac, have no protection from that at all." Erma laughs and gives Mira a wink, "Now I must get back to my kitchens. I am glad you came in tonight and enjoyed my dishes. And Mira, it was a real pleasure to meet the woman who has undone Sir Jac." "Please, come and eat with us again soon." she says with a short bow and then leaves for the kitchens. I guess he isn't well known outside Mark, but he is considered one of our better artists. Personally, I think Erma is every bit the artist as is her husband." As Jac talks he interlaces his fingers with Mira's, caressing them. The pair sit and look into each other's eyes for several seconds, then Jac lifts Mira's hand and kisses the back of her knuckles and releases her hand. "I think it is time for us to go." She gives the tiniest bow of her head before heading to the rest room. Inside, she leans against the door, despite the danger of someone else wanting to open it and takes a deep steadying breath. Then she uses the fresher, washes her hands and checks her makeup. Everything still looked perfect, but she spends a long couple of minutes wondering just how things had gone from 'show me something of Mark that I wouldn't see otherwise' to someone 'meeting the woman that had finally undone Jac'. And she had absolutely no idea. She smiles and moves for the door, humming one of Galina's best love songs under her breath. She's still smiling and humming when she returns to where JaCarter stands. Jac listens and asks a few questions prompting Mira to tell him more. He seems very interested in everything she has to say. > Before she knows it, they have arrived. The limo turns off the main road through a high stone gate. Looking out the side window Mira sees a very large mansion. It is four stories tall and at least 50 windows are lighted invitingly. There are already more than a two dozen limos parked on the grass to one side of the big house and there are several in line ahead of yours slowly driving up the gravel lane depositing their occupants at the front door then pulling off to the side to join the army of limos in the ranks of those waiting. "Big turn out." Jac says leaning across Mira to look out the window on her side. She can smell his scent when he leans over...musky and strangely exciting. Your limo finally arrives at the front of the queue and a man in livery opens the door and bows you both out of the car. Jac hands a pair of cards to the man and with a bow he leads them into the house. Inside, Jac stops for a moment to hand his cape and hat to a woman dressed in a uniform, then taking Mira's arm follows their escort into a large room where you can hear music playing. You pause at the door and look around as your escort announces, "Sir JaCarter Woodbridge and his guest, Sianna Doctor Mira Hasta-Rur." As you were being announced you saw the room is sunken three steps down to a large tiled dance floor. There are a dozen couples dancing to a waltz played by an orchestra at the far end of the room. Around the dance floor there are chairs and tables where men, women, some in couples, some in small groups sit and talk. Everyone is dressed in full regalia, the women in gowns and the men in tuxedos and dress uniforms. It feels like all the eyes in the room are drawn to you as you stand there. Jac pauses a few moment longer as he looks around smiling, then steps down the three steps into the large ballroom and leads Mira across the room. Mira sees that there are wide staircases to either side of the room that lead up to a balcony that wraps around the entire room. She can see more people up there looking down on the dancers below. "A friendly face." Jac says to Mira from the side of his mouth and Mira sees that Jac is leading her toward Lady Ryobi sitting with a small group of people. "Mira, dear!" Lady Ryobi says, "You look lovely!" "Marie, this is the beautiful young woman I was telling you about." Mazie says to one of the woman seated with her. Jac leans down and gives this woman a kiss on the cheek and says, "Hello mother. I didn't know *you'd* be here." Then before she says anything he straightens and says formally, "Mother may I present my very good friend, Mira Hasta-Rur." "Mira, this is my mother Lady Marie Woodbridge." Jac finishes the introduction. "A pleasure, sianna." Lady Marie nods to Mira, "My sister has told me about you. I don't think she completely did you justice. Where *did* you get that gown? Is it a Perez?" There are three men also with this group and they stand as Mira and Jac approached. Mira thinks she recognizes the younger one dressed in a naval uniform, then it hits her. He is the man that did the "debriefing" of the group when they got back from the asteroid the first time. She can't remember his name. "Mira, this is my husband, Ruben." Mazie says taking the hand of one of the older men. "Duke Ruben. Uncle how are you tonight?" Jac asks. Then turns to the other man, "And my father." Jac shakes hands with the other, "Father, uncle, may I present Mira Hasta-Rur." "Mira, my uncle Ruben, Duke Ryobi, and my father Sir JaCarter Woodbridge." Jac says. Both men bow over Mira's hand and bring their lips near her hand, but neither actually kisses it, and make their greetings. Eris AKUS
