997.281: Mira and Jac

Ukanav answers and takes the message from Mira, "I'll let the Captain 
know, Doctor. I'll look after the two creatures in your absence. Have a 
good evening."

The drive takes the van out of the small city and into the hilly 
countryside beyond. The land here is a mixture of farmland and thin 
forest. When the van crests a few of the hills you can see the ocean to 
your left. The road is two lane asphalt and the only traffic is an 
occasional truck or van. You also see a few large grav craft flying a 
few hundred meters above the road.

Jac turns the van to the left onto a side road and the road winds down 
toward the sea. He slows and pulls the van off to the side of the road 
as he crests a hill and points.

"That's our destination." he says pointing at a cluster of buildings 
surrounding a small cove. The buildings are all one and two story, and 
have colorful roofs of reds, greens and yellows. Beyond the buildings 
you can see a small harbor with several boats moored next to a stone quay.

"Is it an island?" Jac asks pointing again, "Look there."

Mira sees that where Jac is pointing the road they are on passes over a 
stone bridge and then goes through a small open field before entering 
the town. It does look like the village is on either an island or a 
small peninsula and the road crosses over a bayou or narrow straight 
before reaching the village.

Pulling the van back onto the road, Jac says brightly, "This should be 
interesting."

The van winds down toward the water, and then takes a very sharp turn 
down toward the stone bridge. The narrow road moves down along a rock 
cliff face. On the van's right the road drops away in a steep 
cliff...surf breaks on rocks far below. On the van's left there is the 
stone face of a cliff rising a 50 meters, or more above the road. Mira 
is  looking out of the ocean as the var moves around a tight bend, when 
suddenly there is the blear of a horn.

"Waaaa!" Jac snaps out suddenly as he slams on brakes. Mira snaps her 
head around and sees a small sports car partially on your side of the 
road. Jac throws out his hand to restrain Mira from falling forward as 
the car brakes hard. The small sports car darts back onto its side of 
the road and rapidly races up the road away from you.

Jac's knuckles are white on the wheel as he struggles to keep the van 
from fishtailing and swinging off the road either into the stone wall or 
over the cliff. He brings the van to a halt finally, and lets out a deep 
"Huff!"

His eyes flash as he turns to look back, "That was close. The damn fool! 
Racing his car like that on a road like this!"

"Oh, how lovely," Mira replies. The scene tugs at fond memories and she 
smiles with pleasure.

Mira placates Jac, "You did very well keeping control of the van, my love."

She's all too aware that if she'd been in a little sports car she'd have 
been barreling along too, "It could have been worse... it could have 
been Jez driving that car..."

She grins up at him, waiting for his reaction.

"Did you get a tag number..." Jac starts, then stops and takes a breath.

Then he chuckles, "Yes, it's a good thing Jez wasn't driving."

"We won't let this ruin our get away." Jac says as he backs the van up 
and continues down the road.

At the foot of the cliff the road straightens out for a couple of 
hundred meters before it rises up crossing the stone bridge. On this 
side of the stone bridge there is a large stone gate, probably built in 
the old days to guard the bridge and protect the village. The gate is 
open, and as Jac slowly drives through you see that it looks like the 
gate hasn't been closed in a very, very, long time. The bridge is 
narrow, barely wide enough for the van, clearly two way traffic isn't 
possible.

As the van follows the road across the field into the village you see a 
figure seated on a large rock looking out to sea. There is an easel with 
a canvas on it next to the figure on the rock. The figure turns at the 
sound of the slowly approaching van, and you see it is a young woman. 
She waves then turns back to her contemplation of the ocean.

When you follow the direction of her visage, you see the sun is setting 
over water toward the west and is streaking the sea with beautiful reds 
and oranges. High up in the sky there are puffy clouds, white on top and 
streaked in reds and oranges as they extend down toward the sea.

There are a pair of large stone pillars flanking the road and anchoring 
a low stone wall that appears to surround the village. A large brass 
sign on one of the pillars proclaims this the town of Brantstone on Sea. 

Inside the walled village Jac drives through the winding cobbled streets 
toward the small harbor. He parks the van next to an old two story 
building with a roof of bright red tile. A sign here tells you that this 
is Hotel Alcazar. There are four cars parked on a gravel filled area 
outside the main building of the hotel, and you can see lights and hear 
sounds from a smaller building that looks like it was added on to the 
hotel at some later date.  There is a picture of a bird with a fish in 
its mouth hanging outside the door. There is also writing on that sign, 
but from where you are you can't read it.

"This looks like the place." Jac says, opening the door and letting in 
the smells of sea water and sea weed and the sounds of sea birds which 
you can see circling over the little harbor to your left.

Jac comes around the van and opens the door for Mira, "I think the 
entrance to the hotel is over here, and the door over there with the 
bird and fish is the door to the local public house. Which one would you 
like to try, *first*, m'lady?"

"Let's check in and we can check the public after that."

Jac chuckles and returns the hug.

"You're wish is my command." he says as he walks arm in arm with Mira 
toward the hotel.

The check in goes smoothly, even though the couple have no luggage. Jac 
gets the couple a top floor room with a balcony that over looks the bay. 
While Jac tips the young man that escorted them to their room, Mira 
steps out on the balcony.

The red sun is just sinking into the sea and is turning the water the 
color of brushed copper. The sky is streaked with reds and orange as the 
sun's light reflects underneath the clouds in the sky. Over the bay 
flocks of sea birds circle and dive toward the water looking for their 
evening meal, and reminding Mira that she hasn't eaten in several hours. 
There are several small boats in the harbor and a pair of sailboats with 
large white sails out in the bay, beating their way back toward the 
quay. Looking down, Mira sees the roof tops of the buildings of the 
village spread out before her like colored tiles of bight red, green, 
orange and blue, and she can hear the sounds of children laughing from 
somewhere down toward the water.

"Lovely isn't it?" Jac says stepping to her side.

Jac wraps an arm around Mira and lifts her chin up with other hand. 
He leans down and kisses her softly as he runs his fingers lightly 
through her hair burnished the color of copper by the light of the 
setting sun.

Stepping back, a bit Jac says, "Are you ready to try the local? Have 
a drink and see what they have on the menu for dinner?"

Mira nods and steps back into the room. Jac follows, and the pair head 
down toward the lobby of the small hotel, and then across it toward the 
public house attached to the northen side. From behind the closed wooden 
door you can hear the muffled sounds of piano music and happy voices. 
The sounds become clear when Jac opens the door.  You can see a man 
playing piano across the room and there are a half dozen people gathered 
around the piano talking and laughing. To the right of the piano and 
running back toward the door you are entering you see a bar area with 
several stools along the bar rail. Behind the bar a young woman is 
mixing drinks. To the left the room opens up into a dining area with 
several tables. Along the far wall, beyond the piano, there is an 
gallery partially separated with wooden rails. There are a pair of men 
there throwing darts toward a target at the end of the gallery.

"Welcome!" you hear a man say to your left and as you enter, an older 
man holding a white towel in his left hand steps toward you and smiles, 
holding out his right hand to shake, "I'm Bill Acton, the publican here. 
Are you new guests here at the hotel?"

menus and cutlery...and the wine list, *now!*:

The table is wooden and so are the four chairs surrounding it. There is 
no tablecloth, no place settings, and the unlite candle in the center is 
melted into an old wine bottle.

You can tell from the drop in the sounds of conversations around you 
that you're drawing attention from everyone in the pub.

Jac smiles at Mira and holds out her chair for her, "Thank you Si Acton."

She has menus under her arm and appears nervous.

Jac says to the publican, "My companion and I are on an overnight 
holiday and would prefer that no special attention was brought to 
ourselves. If you don't mind?"

"Of course, Sir Woodbridge. Of course!" he bobs his head, "We'll only 
give you the same attention we give *all* our guests."

Mabel, puts the dinnerware and napkins on the table and offers menus to 
Mira and Jac. The menus are cardboard and appear to be well worn.

After a quick glance at the menu, Jac says to Mira, "Why don't we just 
order the dinner special? It's a fish stew, and here by the seaside 
should be good. White wine with it?"

The next few hours pass quickly. Jac proves to be better at darts than 
Mira thought, better than she and as good as anyone in the pub. He also 
wins the local crowd over with his good nature, and the several rounds 
for the house that he buys.

Mira and the barmaid, Mabel, are having a go at the dart board when Jac 
comes over and whispers to Mira, "I think we have a problem."

When he gets her attention he says, "I just got a comm from Auntie."

He holds up his comm for her to read a text message displayed on it and 
continues, "She sent a message via a ship that jumped not long after we 
did, and the ship transmitted the message in from the gas giant to the 
local net. I just got it."

The text reads, "The subject of your search is in extreme danger. We 
just intercepted a transmission that indicates the subject is to be 
eliminated immediately. It is likely that message will arrive where you 
found her, at the same time, if not before, this one arrives, so you'll 
have to move quickly."

Jac says frowning, "It was encrypted and tagged private to me. Aunt 
Mazie probably has ships delivered to every system in the area  because 
she doesn't know where we will have found the girl, and wants the 
message to get to us as soon as possible."

"We need to contact the others with this right away, Mira." he says, 
"I'm sorry, but if they have found her our little get away is over."

"Would you call the ship and check in while I settle our tab here?"
