997.281:/Mae Lee/ -- Ricardo Returns to the Ship

The group at the cargo hold, Cory, Woof, Arvitis and Ukanav, see a pair
of men walking across the tarmac toward the ship. One is Ricardo, the
other you don't recognize. The stranger is average height and slim, and
he is wearing a dirty shipsuit and is smiling as he walks along beside
Ricardo.

OOC: Still NPCing Ricardo...hoping Bruce gets back with us soon.

"Hello, the ship!" Ricardo calls and waves, "Come over and meet Del Tomas."

Ricardo adds with a touch of significance in his voice and a raised
eyebrow toward Woof and Cory, "He's the engineer for that 200 dtoner
that came in just before us."

"Hi!" Del says a touch self-consciously.

Just before Woof explains what all has been done to try to find the little
girl, he notices the men approaching.

"Better than I was." Del answers color rising up his cheeks.

Ricardo drapes an arm over Del's shoulders and says, "Yeah, Del here was
telling me what a 'hell hole' that other ship was, and how crazy her
Captain is...leaving Mark with no cargo and only 3 Hooters as
passengers. If he's any good, I was thinking we might want to hire him
on as an engineer. We can always use another engineer, can't we?"

"Ukanav, would you show Del to the Aft Engine Room for me while I have a
minute with Woof, Cory and Arvitis." Ricardo says, "Del, I'll join you
there in a minute and we can check out your engineering skills."

After the vargr has lead Del out of ear shot, Ricardo says, "Lucky break
getting one of that crew aboard so we can question him...and we *could*
use another engineer if Kelly stays with the /Blue Rain/."

"After I check out his skills, I'll give Woof and Cory a chance to sound
him out...see if you can get any intellegence out of him on the girl."
Ricardo says, "What have you gotten done while I was away this afternoon?"

Arvitis snorts and says, "Damn little! They just moved the cargo out."
like that was a trivial matter.

"I on the other hand, have been busy with a lead on the Imperial..." he
stops and frowns, "But no, the missing girl is more important to all of
you right now."

Ricardo looks at each of the three men waiting for them to speak up.

Cory smiles and shakes his head at Arvitis then stage whispers in his
direction "found your densometer," and punctuates with a wink.

> Ricardo looks at each of the three men waiting for them to speak up.

"Not much really. Unloaded the cargo, chatted up the brokers though we didn't
find out anything more than you did about the hooters that came in, may have
a line on some spec for when we leave, practiced wagging and attempted
flicking but only confused Ukanav, took over Lysia's post guarding the door,
but mostly we were waiting to see what you were going to bring back the poor
working slobs for dinner."

"Where *is* Lysia?" Ricardo asks, but doesn't wait for an answer before
continuing with a grin, "I'm sorry, but I didn't bring any food back.
Woof's the head of the Purser's department now, get him to cook something."

He leaves and comes back to find you all in the galley (either eating
something someone cooked or starving) with Del Tomas, "Del is a pretty
fair Engineer. I'll let you talk to him a bit while I run over and pay a
courtesy call on a ship in court."

He grins and winks at Woof and Cory before leaving, "One that Shawn
Smith is skippering."

Del Tomas shifts from one foot to another waiting for you to ask him to
sit, eat, or talk.

"We made some possible connections for cargo, for freight, too. And we got
everything offloaded. I don't know much more about the missing girl,
though. This Del guy may be the ticket! If we can get something good, I
can't wait to tell Lessa!"

arrived this morning."

Ricardo nods, "I want to talk to Shawn and find out if they've dug up
anything. I talk with him briefly in town while I had Del in tow, and I
got the impression that he did. That's one reason I'm running over there
tonight. The other is I think it might be a good idea to start thinking
about *how* we want to use the /Blue Rain/. It could be a scout for us,
jumping out ahead, or to side systems looking for good trading deals
that we could exploit."

Arivits speaks up, "If it's not staying *with* this ship, maybe I could
go with them and we could check out the leads I have on the missing
Imperial Library. Ricardo, if I can find it, it will be worth a fortune,
I mean a *real fortune!*"

Ricardo frowns but says, "Maybe. Just how *good* are these leads of
yours Arvitis? I don't want us running off on wild greep chases."

"Good!" Arivitis replies, "And if I could get the book that I sent Mira
off to find, I think I could pin point its location."

"Where *is* Mira?" Ricardo asks looking around.

cover we can find out the identity and location of the most recent
arrival. Once we do that we can figure out how to 'extract' her."

"Well, Cory, do you feel up to making some decisions about what cargoes
we should pick up here tomorrow?" Ricardo says, "I think Woof will want
to come with the party down to the Hooter colonies. Our next stop is
going to be Newton and we might be leaving in a hurry, so getting
freight and cargo for there picked and loaded ASAP should be important."

"If she's interested in that." Ricardo says then chuckles, "But frankly,
I suspect once we get her daughter back she's going to want to get back
to Mark and kick someone's butt...figuratively speaking."

"Not just figuratively." You turn to see Lessa leaning against a doorjam
listening, "I want to go with you tomorrow."

Ricardo frowns, "Well, I don't suppose it matters for to night, but
starting tomorrow we're on 'Alert Status', everyone is on duty 24 hours
a day until we get the Rachel back and get off this planet."

"You know, Arvitis." Ricardo says after thinking a moment, "You might
have a good idea there. The /Blue Rain/ might be just the diversion we
are looking for, *once* we have Rachael."

"That would work." Ricardo nods, "If someone comes after her, they
follow the wrong ship. I'm afraid there might be some trouble with the
law here if we grab the girl, though, and we can't spend a lot of time
here, nor can we explain what was behind her being taken in the first
place. It would work best if it looks like Shawn and his bunch just
grabbed the girl and ran...like Lessa was aboard there the entire time.

Woof holds his arm out to Lessa so she can come stand by him, and he wraps
an arm around her waist. "But she still can't afford to be seen! Even
here.... unless it is *after* you have Rachel, and we're ready to lift and
run. But not until Rachel is safe."

He thinks it over a bit. "I think it would work. If we identify Rachel,
somehow, then distract the and then Shawn pulls
off a kidnapping. I don't want Rachel to be scared, though, but I guess she
is right now... Why don't you pitch it to Shawn?"

"I'll do that." Ricardo says, "However, I think tomorrow is just for
scouting. First we find Rachel tomorrow, and then we...or Shawn...goes
back in tomorrow night to grab her. If we can do that, the /Blue Rain/
would lift immediately after the snatch, and the natural thought would
be that Lessa and Rachel are aboard her. I think we could even encourage
that idea a little if Captain Morgan comes by."

"What are we gonna tell him?" Ricardo asks, "That we have a murder
suspect aboard that we helped avoid the authorities on Mark and that
we're here to kidnap a little girl. Yes, it's Lessa's daughter, but is
Morgan gonna take our word for it? And if word that Lessa is coming
after Rachel, you remember what those thugs said they'd do to her, don't
you?"

"My research into those kinds of communities. I spoke about it when Captain
Morgan was here. He'd be expecting me to take notes and want to ask people
questions. That's all. But you've got a point about playing for keeps.
I'll be armed, and can do a pretty good endgame myself. But we can get more
intel from Del... In fact, after you go to talk with Shawn, Ricardo, I'll
talk with Del."

"Maybe I'm confused, but it's not Morgan we're worried about tricking. Good
guys are always easy to trick. They're honest and aren't trying to hide
anything. It's the bad guys who think everyone is out to take advantage of
them just like they are, we need to trick. If you talk to Mira she'll explain
about transference and how reality is shaded by personal expectations. No the
right people to do the interrogations of Hooters is Mira as the doctor doing
stress studies, Arvitis her absent minded Anthropologist assistant and Jac
the dumb noble who is smitten by the doctor and founding her ridiculous
endeavors making him an easy mark. Anyone else that goes should be looking
for hand outs for performing services. Getting flowers, vases, and silly
handcrafted trinkets which will bring big tips from Jac. If this help happens
to spread the word about Jac's incompetence and how angry his mother will be
for him flitting off like this, we might even turn him into bait, but either
way low lives that believe in easy money will just know that nobles think
with their nethers. That my friend is a cover. "

Woof just looks at him. "Your point? We are just going to try to locate
Rachel. Nothing more. And Captain Morgan is just going along to open the
door, so to speak."

"My point? My POINT?" Cory exhales calming himself, "My point is finding a
little girl while on an escorted sight seeing tour is about as likely as
finding Arvitis stash of the ancients while planting corn, except if you were
planting corn you'd at least have an excuse for staying in the field. We need
an excuse for staying till we find her that doesn't send the bad guys running
or attacking or killing the girl and running, and a half baked, blundering,
bull in a china shop, gosh I hope I'm lucky, plan that's more concerned about
your macho points than a little girls safety isn't it."

"Think for a second will you? We know the kidnapper is at the least marginally
competent, so if it was you what would you do?"

Cory looks at Ricardo, "You need to keep a reporter quiet. That means you have
to have means of showing the child growing. So it mean you must set up for
contact in the future. For there to be contact in the future, you wouldn't
pick this colony unless you already had contacts. The person you are dealing
with is a reporter so you'd at least assume they had the ability to research
or the means to hire someone too, therefor you're safe spot would need to be
a situation which allowed you to watch your back trail."

Cory's eyes shift back to Woof, "Then we have the jailors perspective. When
are they most paranoid? Now, right after the abduction. If they get any
knowledge of questioning, it could spook them. The ship is still on the
planet, so we know for sure there are people willing to do violence involved.
They also expect no matter what happens to the kid, they can get it all fixed
if they get back to their noble friend."

"Then we have to consider the hooters not involved. They are already
distrustful of outsiders. As an insular society any thing asked or done by
us will be gossiped to the whole community. All this doesn't even take into
account if this isn't the first child used to keep a parent's actions
hostage. Then we have a lot more than a few hooters looking the other way."

"It's Ricardo's call," Woof says, going to talk to Del.

Ricardo leaves you to talk to Del and goes over to the /Blue Rain/.

"Guys, the /Bright Star/ is a pit, and I'll take just about *any* sort
of berth to get off her. I think I showed your Captain I can handle
myself in Engineering." Del says, "So, what do you need to know about me
before you can offer me a job?"

Woof turns on the liaison to the max it can be, asking for pertinent
personal information with a friendly means. Any issues they can deal with,
cause we need an engineer, and can work around 'issues'. Make the man tell
him what's up without asking...

"I'm the Purser, Wolfgang Schultz. Friends call me Woof, and some call me
worse than that!" he laughs. "Please call me Woof.

"I need to know the personnel stuff, whether or not Ricardo wants to know,"
he answers with a friendly grin. "You know, how long you were on the last
berth, why you're wanting to leave, career goals, any certifications you
have, when last you tested, etc. I mean, most things we can handle. We run
a ship on the up and up, an independent, and we need to keep above board so
as to be above reproach when the Guild comes knocking. So, I should also
know if you're carrying any record so we can avoid those planetfalls, or at
least be aware before we head there. Small package business type stuff or
the like we've all done, so..." He shrugs.

"Let's start with the certs..."
