997.281: /Blue Rain/ -- An Alarm Goes Off

Shawn and Ilane have finished whatever they were doing after Ricardo
left. Kelly and April have finished in the Engine room, too.

Suddenly, an alarm goes off on the small bridge.

Looking at the sensors, Shawn sees that a small grav craft is just
lifting off from the /Bright Star/. He had set the alarm to go off if
there was any action around that ship, and this qualifies. That a craft
would be lifting off from that ship this time of night sets off warning
bells in Shawn's brain, too.

Should he call Ricardo over on the /Mae Lee/ and ask about it? Should he
get his new ship involved in this? Should he just take Ilane to bed and
forget about everything else?

"Hell!"

He opened the com channel to Ricardo.

"Ricardo! The other ship is sending out someone in a grav craft. Anything going on?"

Ricardo is outside and his comm buzzes. He lifts it to his ear, "Captain
O'Brien here."

> "Ricardo! The other ship is sending out someone in a grav craft.

"Yeah, there is." Ricardo says, "Jac got a message. It said that they've
now got orders to eliminate the hostage, and we think that's where
they're going."

"Woof, Cory, Mira and Jac are taking the /Random Walk/ and going after
them." Ricardo says, "Um, I don't suppose you'd be interested in joining
them. You and Kelly, maybe?"

"Crap. Yes. The girls can prep the ship for launch and we can boost as soon as we get the girl and
get back."

"Well, if you're coming you better get off the pot, because I don't
think Woof or Mira is going to wait longer than it takes to get armed an
back aboard the /Random Walk/." Ricardo says then he says quietly, "I

He took one look at the disapproving woman next to him.

"Screw it. We'll do what you like and boost right from there. Follow us."

He shut off the com.

"All hands! We are boosting now. There is a hit squad after Rachel right now. We are going with the
Rain and right up and out. It will look suspicious but I'll just have to deal with it."

He started bringing up the systems and will boost as soon as he can.

The comm buzzes again, it is Ricardo, "Look, don't tip *them* off, okay.
We plan to trail them and hit them once we know where they are heading,
but before they can kill the girl. She's got to be down on that southern
continent and with the Hooters. There won't be any radio comms in the
Hooter colony."

"I figure that's why they have to go themselves." he finishes.

"Walk, this is Blue Rain. We're boosting now. We will stay behind them and follow your lead. When we
get her, we will lift right out and link suspicion on us. Looks like we will be splitting up for a
bit so anything needing to go with us will need to be swapped then. Over."

The "bad guys" are in a grav craft that is flying south a couple of
hundred meters high and at about 400 kpm.

OOC: How is Shawn intending to follow them? Go up into orbit and keep
and eye on where they go, or stay down in the atmosphere where they'll
be a really big, and very obvious, bogy on the "bad guy's" sensors?

Orbit.

"Kelly, we may have to jump without the repairs. Go over the jump drives as well as you can."

"I'm on it." He turns to the terminal and brings up the appropriate

The engines still need an overhaul. Kelly can do enough work on them so
that they will work for a few jumps, and probably won't misjump even
once, but he'll need several hours of concentrated work on them to do
it...say four or five hours. During that time the jump drive simply
won't be operational.

And then there is the fact that the ship doesn't have enough fuel aboard
to jump at the moment! Sure, you could refuel from the extensive oceans
here on Serbia, but that'll mean setting down somewhere and spending a
couple of hours running the pumps, and then refining the fuel aboard.
You have the fuel processing plant, but it only does 5 dtons an hour and
you need 10 dtons for a jump 1, so once you're refueled, you'll need
another 2 hours to process the fuel for a single jump. That could be
done on the run out to the jump point, though.

If it does, they are all out at the gas giant where almost all the
traffic stops. No evidence of system defense boats near the planet.
Doesn't prove they don't, but you've seen no evidence they do, and the
Port Captain didn't sound like they did either.

"Shawn, we have a couple of things to take care of before we can jump."
Kelly consults the display. "We need to refuel and refine that fuel before
we can jump, and I need five hours to get the jump drive up and running
again. We can refine on the way out, though."

Kelly nods. They reach the engineering section, and Kelly goes to the main
console and brings up the jump drive diagnostics. "You know," he stops and
turns to her, "I'm a bit ashamed of myself right now."

"Why,Kelly?"

"Because," he sighs and half-sits on the console, "I'm happy that you won't

and I'm..." he breaks off with a shrug.

She blinks a few times. "Your happy I'm not going with them. There are
certain risks you have to take. If I were on the boat...I wouldn't have
thought twice about it. But I'm not...so we have a reprieve..it's
temporary as are most things. I don't mean to be pessimistic but... Let's
just get to work shall we?" April attempts to change the subject.

He smiles wanly and shakes his head. "Guess I've lost too many friends." He
straightens up and opens a nearby tool locker. "You'll need this," he
extends a box containing a multipurpose diagnostic meter and an electronic
toolkit. "We need to start here," he points to the display.

April interjects, "I understand but you must realize there are no
guarantees it won't happen again."

She takes up the tools he points to and hands him whatever he needs,
following his instructions. "Right, and now?"

Kelly looks away for a moment. "I don't know if I can stand any more loss."
He looks at her. "Especially not you."

He taps the display. "You go open this maintenance hatch." He indicates one
at about the center of the ship. "That is the primary emitter alpha
junction. Meanwhile, I will set up the diagnostic program with the timing
pulses. These old systems are much more labor-intensive than the new stuff.
Your meter plugs in at the junction box, and you can monitor the adjustments
as I make them."

April makes her way to the appropriate hatch with the meter. She plugs
the meter in a the junction box and opens a channel to him. "Alright I'm
ready for you."

"Glad to hear it," Kelly replies with a grin. He starts the program. "Okay,
from the top. Alpha Net, Channel One. You should be getting a 450 gigahertz
signal and no sideband."

"Alright. Hang on a sec." Kelly types in the reading, then goes to the next
channel. "Okay, Channel Two..." He goes through the whole network and makes
the needed adjustments.

The pair of you work...occasionally, Kelly makes an adjustment, or calls
for April to move this or that left or right...the work isn't hard, it
is just tedious and is going to take a long time to complete.

The /Blue Rain/ powers up to a direct insertion to orbit around the
planet. Sensors show Shawn the grav vehicle still traveling south at
about 400 klicks and the /Random Walk/ just lifting off from the starport.

The comm lights up on the board in front of Shawn. The tell-tale next to
it indicates there are two channels hailing. One is the Serbian traffic
channel and the other is one commonly used by the /Mae Lee/.

"Um..." She seems a bit uncertain about the whole thing, but she takes a deep
breath and answers the comm line anyway. "Serbia Traffic Control, this is the
Blue Rain...can I help you?"
