997.182:Up and At 'Em!

Around the ship the crew begins to wake up.

Woof sits in his cabin, debating whether to head to the galley or to
Lessa's cabin.

Ricardo rolls over as his comm buzzes again. This time it *is* time
to get up. There is a lot of work to get done. Somebody needs to
arrange some cargo, look for passengers, and keep an eye on that
other ship.

In the stateroom that Jac and Myra are sharing, Jac nudges Mira and
whispers into her ear, "If that's not a Serbian bee, it must be time
for us to wake up."

He sighs and rolls over sitting up at the edge of the bed, "With the
short crew we have now, I don't think the Captain will look
favorably on us staying in bed."

Looking over his shoulder he says with a grin and a wink, "But I'll
risk his ire if you insist."

Lysia wakes from her slumber in her cabin. The small cabin reminds
her of the cell she was in last night...small and windowless.

He gets up, showers, dresses and heads to the galley for kaffe and a
bite. While waiting for the pot to brew (or Woof to finish cooking)
he checks the starport message board on the terminal, looking for
passenger or freight listings.

He asks Cory (who should be on the bridge) "Anything going on with
that freighter and it's riff-raff out on the tarmac?"

Ricardo thinks a moment, then surveys the list of evidence we have
implicating the bad guys, and puts together an electronic packet
sufficient to show the truth of what happened to the Port Captain.

If necessary, he'll hand this over to the P.C. before we lift. In any
case, he'll pass it on to the P.C. after the 'Lee' lifts. Both the
Hooter and non-hooter leadership here need to see this. Might even
hold the bad guys over for kidnapping.

"Jac, Mira " he says when he and Mira show up. "I'm thinking we
should make certain evidence available to the Port Captain regarding
the events of the last few days. I'm thinking of taking it
confidentially to him and let him sort out the headaches.

"Jac, you're an official of sorts with the Mark government, I may
need you to show some sort of credentials and and speak to the
authenticity of the documents. Do you have anything suitable?

"My dilemma is the risk of getting stuck here for any criminal
proceedings, but it has the advantage of stopping any sort of warrant
out on the "Rain", which could prove rather problematic for Shawn,
and holding these guys..." He gestures in the direction of the other
ship "...here on kidnapping charges.

"I mean, the papers we did are good, and it was a mostly legal
salvage, it's just we ALSO don't know what kind of paper trail the
"Rain" has out there, and I'd rather not add to it.

"Nothing I *want* use." Jac says quietly and shrugs then adds, "Are
you sure you want to do this before Mark Internal Security gives us
the go ahead. If the details of what happen get back to
the...um...to certain parties let's say...it will compromise the
Bla...er, the authorities ability to *deal* with situation effectively."

"I can understand that, but I'm thinking more about the safety of
Mark, and of Lessa, and her daughter Rachel, too." Jac says, "You
realize that there are certain elements buried deep inside the Mark
hierarchy that have to be rooted out. Giving them or their masters

Ricardo scratches his head and makes some faces.

"I see your point. It's just that we're out ahead of your aunt, and
Shawn's out ahead of us, and Serbia could turn a serious
conflagration if the Hooters decide to face off the rest of the
colonists, based on possibly fabricated stories of kidnapping, and
I'd really hate to have that wait on Mark's problems being sorted out.

"It may not suit Mark's purposes to let the folks here know what's
going on, but the people here don't deserve to have their lives
turned to shit because of it. A lot can happen on a world off the
main like Serbia, between the odd visit...like a civil war."

He frowns. "There may be some way to do both...there usually is."

"I'll think about it, and you think about it and we'll decide later.
With luck, Lord Procrastination will take care of the issue and we
won't have to do anything."

He finishes his pastry. "Good stuff as always, Woof. I'm off to
arrange some cargo. I've also got to arrange to get some of that
marvelous stout I had the other night. If we're lucky, there's enough
to sustain trade. If not, there's certainly going to be enough to
sustain us! Are we fixed for kegs?"

OOC> If not well, we certainly SHOULD be. What's the use of having a
ship the size of a small office building if you can't have a few
luxuries...

He grabs his comm, and heads off to the warehouse to meet the brokers.

we trust."

Lysia looks about her room with a sigh, there was a time when she'd cry if
her closet was smaller than this room, and then there was a time she's have
begged for a room half this size. Now she wasn't quite sure what to make of
the world any more.

Lysia had always know that there were two of her, an older more mature and
dependable her, and the younger brasher less dependable her but now it
seemed there was a third and that was unsettling.

She looks over at a small framed picture of Morgan and her daughter (who's
name eludes me now), "Morning Morg, morning sweetie. I guess it's time to
figure things out again."

Lysia has a long shower, dress's in a well cut navy blue pant suit with low
heals and heads to the galley to see what's on the docket for the morning.
She straps her pistol in a well concealed shoulder holster under her jacket.

As Lysia enters the galley. Ricardo is sitting at the terminal
answering messages. Woof is finishing food preparation. Jac is
sipping a cup of coffee and talking with Ricardo about something.

OOC: Suz, did Mira accompany Jac to the galley after they got up, or
did she head directly for her garden for her early morning

Mira enters her garden, already humming a little turn, but then
stops and frowns. She missed yesterday entirely due to more pressing
events and she can already see the effect on her plants! The
automatic life support system to provide water and nutrients is
working, but it doesn't provide the extra care that Mira lavishs on
her plants. She knows she will need to spend and extra hour in here
today, and it occurs to her that here on an agricultural planet, she
might want to visit a nursery or two and see if there are any local
plants available that she could add. Maybe even see if she can find
a large tank for the fish and other water creatures she plans to
eventually add...she wonders if Jac would like to come along, and if
he's busy, maybe she could ask someone else?

As Mira is working away in the garden she feels a presence and looks
around. Behind her, sitting on the deck watching her with large eyes
is one of the creatures they rescued from the /Blue Rain/...she
can't tell which one it is. The animal is sitting very still, just
quietly watching what she is doing with big eyes, the tip of its
long tail flicking every once in a while as if it was shooing off
imaginary flies.

Mira gets the feeling that it wants something from her.

Ricardo laughs. "The Port Cap says to swing by his office for a free
'I'm not the girl you're looking for' card. Keep the locals off of
yah, possibly others who have had the misfortune to run into this
mystery woman."

"I've got to finish checking out the new Engineer so he's can get us

lift tonight."

Newton, possibly even to Montrose, get in touch with him, sort that
out."

"Jac, Mira undoubtedly wants to get some supplies for the 'ponics and
stuff here, makes sense, on an ag world."

Any other Q's or A's needed? If not, Ricardo finishes breakfast, goes
to check in with checks
his progress on the sims and he's doing ok, tells him to go out get
anything he needs personal done, after lunch we start working on the
old girl for real, prepping for lift. Then he calls the brokers and
arranges a meeting this morning.

"Ricardo..." Jac says, "Two things I think need mentioning because
of what we did last night, and both concern security. First, I think
we need to keep one or two trusted crewmen aboard at all times, and
armed, as long as that other ship is still in port."

"Second, I don't think *any* of us should move around outside the
Starport alone. I will stick with Mira while she is doing her
shopping, when you go out looking for cargo, I think someone should
go with you, when Woof goes out to buy supplies for our next jump he
should be accompanied as well. In fact, I don't think it would be
wise for *any* of us to run around alone from now on." Jac says.

"Not just because of Lessa and Rachel, but because we don't know
these worlds' customs or laws, we don't know where is and isn't
safe, and also because we might already have some enemies out there
gunning for us." Jac rubs his chin and says, "I recommend that you,
as Captain, make that a ship policy...that until you are sure of a

Ricardo sighs. "I agree someone on board at all times, but sometimes

no doubt books will be written, if necessary, to throw at 'em.

"The bad guys HAVE to know that they're not in a very tenable
situation legally, or they'd be here already with the authorites and
a search warrant."

He shrugs. "All that said, the buddy system won't hurt. Just remember
two things: we're not in trouble here, and we want to come back and
trade with these folks someday. We don't have to *look* innocent, we
are innocent.

I assume that we'd still need crowbars and plastique to separate you

"You don't set up a patrol outside Captain, you just have to be causual

"Couple quick points. One, we need to keep the ship locked up just
to make sure we don't get any unexpected visitors. Two, someone has
to be Cory's buddy here on the ship. Three our ships crew should
try to keep someone or a couple of someones in the hold near the
entrances of the ship at all times. And four, if you think you're wearing
that thing," she points to his usual loud shirt, "with me you are sadly
mistaken. At least wear a jacket or something if you can't be seperated
from it."

Lysia shudders as she looks at the shirt.

Del, after an afternoon or work and good night's sleep feels much
better about things this morning. He has found the engines in good
repair, and the Engine Rooms to be neat and tidy. It's going to be a
pleasure to work on these systems...however there is one anomaly.
The jump drive control unit is absolutely *not* the original that
was installed with this drive, and the records indicate that the
drive was capable at one point of make Jump 3. Jump 3! Del's heard
of such on a few military ships, but never on a civilian ship like this.

"Morning Captain." he says when Ricardo comes in. Ricardo notes that
there is a smile on the small man's face this morning, and his eyes
look a good bit brighter than they did when he met him in that bar.

"Heck, if it wasn't rude and illegal I'd just sit in a lake and suck

route than buying what some places sell as 'clean'. I'd rather have

"That makes more sense than a suicide. Killing himself didn't match
up with the tales I'd heard of old Akus." Del says.

He asks, "Is it true that he was so old that he remembered the time
before we discovered jump drives, and that he was a crewman on one

After you confirm it...

"Well, isn't that something!" Del looks around, "To be crew on a

"But enough of that, I better get to work."

Air Check telltail would be on a vacc suit and calls out, "Clean
air, Captain!"

Ricardo replies with a lazy salute. "Clean air, Del." On his way out
he rummages in the tools a bit, comes up with a pair of welding
goggles. "Borrowing these, Del!" Then he goes off in search of Lysia
and thence to the brokers.

He finds Lysia, and the moment she starts to complain abuut the
shirt, he holds out the goggles. "Here, now come on..." Grinning, he
heads out, checking that his fone is charged.

He stops by the intercom by the hatch, and comms Cory on the bridge.
"This is the Captain, Lysia and I are off to the brokers. I've got my
fone if you need me."

Then out of the ship and off.

Del looks a bit surprised when he sees what Ricardo is borrowing,
but only says, "Sure thing, Captain."

Ricardo's phone is fully charged and shows a good connection to the
local network.

OOC: Jac rented a van yesterday and it is sitting outside the ship
with the keys in the ignition. Are you taking it or getting to the
brokers address (which they gave you) some other way? Like, didn't
Lysia park her "land yacht" in the cargo hold before you left Mark,
or did she not?

OOC: That'd make the tongues wag! If Lysia's car is here, we'll take
it. That'll leave the van for Woof.

OOC: Okay, waiting for Derek to tell me if Lysia's car is aboard or
if I dreamed that. In the mean time, we'll get you going...

Ricardo and Lysia stop by the Port Captain's office before leaving
the port. Captain Morgan is standing next to a desk where a woman is
doing something on a terminal. He looks a bit haggard, like he's
been under some pressure and hasn't gotten all the sleep he'd like.

"Oh, hello, Captain." he says when he spots Ricardo coming though
the door, "Come on in."

Spotting Lysia he says, "Ah, and this must be the look alike for
that Virgy woman."

He looks a Lysia's face and nods, "Yes, you do look an awful lot
like her photograph, but dna doesn't lie. Let me get that card for you."

He turns to the woman and says, "Meredeth, keep checking the sat
logs, they must have picked up *something* from last night."

"Oh, this is my assistant, Meredeth Brooks he says as he walks
toward a door in the back of the room, "Come with me. I've got the
card on my desk."
