1110.200: Bart's Introduction

Bartholomew Cuthbert was strolling down Jennifer's Alley. It was 1810,
and he had an appointment with his new employer in 20 minutes. Meeting
the "crew" in a bar, for the first time, was a strange idea to the
ex-marine...usually you retired to a bar *after* a briefing session
rather than before. The slightly bewildered expression on his face
turned in to a bemused one as he chuckled to himself. If the Captain ran
his meetings in bars he couldn't be all bad.

To his right something in a shop window caught his eye.

"Ah!" he breathed to himself pausing to stare at the object displayed
there, "Now *that's* a nice one. Look at those curves, the smooth lines."

Bart had been thinking that he needed to buy himself an auto pistol, and
here was a nice shiny new one in a case with a black leather holster.
Pistol, case and holster, 250 cr...not a bad price....

"Well I wont know less I check," he mumbles to himself as he enters the shop
and scans the room. Spotting a clear spot in front of the umbrella stand and
the broken door stop, he slips his duffel bag off his shoulder with a well
practiced ease and motions to the clerk by flipping his finger in the
direction of the pistol.

12.6 sec after the clerk hands him the pistol it's disassembled and spread on
the counter. Bart first checks the barrel catch which he's sure slowed him by
a few tenths of a second and decides sitting in a window being neglected is
no way to treat a nice weapon. He then spends a few moments inspecting each
piece.

He looks up, starring the clerk in the eyes and billows "Is it hot?" while his
fingers begin to reassemble what he hopes will be his new best friend.

OOOG> No, no no...you have it all wrong. You're supposed to
disassemble two colts and a remington, then mix them all into one
gun, Tuco!

The clerk brings the pistol over still in the small metal case.

It looks good. The spring is a bit tight, seldom fired, and
the lubricant on the parts is still fresh and clean, but the
parts all look good.

"Hot?" the clerk raises his eyebrows and says, "I wouldn't be
displaying the damn thing in the window if it was hot. This
weapon is as clean as a whistle. I got all the papers you'd
ever care to see, bud. You interested?"

Bart smiles and peals off four bills from his clip, while his eyes scan behind
the counter looking for mags and ammo, "Give me what papers you have, a
cleaning kit, a shoulder holster if you've got it, 6 spare mags, some lint
free barrel patches if the kits got those cheap ones in it, 200 soft hollows
and 200 with a jacket."

He pauses for a second in thought, "Can you think of anything else?" he asks
as he snatches his duffel to the counter and begins to load it.

The shopkeeper pulls out what looks like a small book and
says, "As soon as you fill out the forms required for the
purchase of a firearm, I can let you have the pistol and the
rest of the things you want to buy."

Bart looks at the book of forms. It is made of an electronic
paper and must be 50 pages thick!

Seeing Bart's expression the shopkeeper says, "Of course, if
you are in a hurry I might be able to work something out..."

Bart retrieves the money clip he's put back in his pocket and removes another
100cr bill and then pulls his ID from his left breast pocket. "How 'bout we
run this though that scanner you got and we let your computer fill the stuff
out. I'll be at Norman's lounge for the next few hours and then on a ship
called Akus, just in case you need to get hold of me?" he questioningly
suggests. Then those remarkable raised eyebrows roll even further up his
forehead as he hands the ID and the extra 100cr to the clerk.

"Yes, I think we can work something out..." the shopkeeper makes that
100cr disappear as he takes the Id from Bart. A few seconds later Bart
is leaving the shop with the pistol and other supplies in a bag and a
"Provisional License" that is good until his final license is
approved...probably long after he has left this system.
