Each are asked to insert their hand into a security scanner and are cleared through the gate. One of the guards inside hands each of them a small stick on badge to wear and says, "Follow the lights." Sure enough you can see a trio of lights on the deck leading down a corridor. Then with a chuckle and wink the guard adds, "If you leave the path the wrath of god will descend on you...in the form of security robots with no sense of humor." "Have a good night!" he calls after you before sitting down and going back to reading some sort of magazine. The lights lead you down one corridor, then right, and then left down a row of ships resting in individual berths. Near the end the lights lead you to a ship smaller than most you've passed. There are several yard workers outside it finishing up with applying a fresh coat of paint. Up on the nose you see /Akus Moby/...you must have found your home for the next six months or so. The cargo hatch is closed, as is the passenger hatch on the second deck, but there is a gangway down near the front of the ship. Looking up the gangway you see it leads to an airlock hatch on the lower deck. Crew Entrance is printed above the open hatch. OOC: Paris will meet you inside. She might have cabin assignments for you...or not. > She sets her gear down in Engineering pending a cabin assignment, and > begins running diagnostics and checking the ship's logs. > Where she immediately begins running systems diagnostics to see what > works, what doesn't work, what needs to be fixed, what can wait till > tommorow to be fixed and what can be held off on till a week from > next tuesday. Merinn drops her gear and goes to inspect her new > domain. OOC: Merinn drops her gear in Cabin 6? Desi starts running the diagnostics running, then takes a quick look around the Engineering spaces. Merinn comes in and starts looking around. Desi is peering down at the jump drive between the two big maneuver drives. She can't help but let out a disgusted snort seeing that the jump drive is the original model...Mark I they call it. It works just fine, but someone is going to have to crawl under it to do maintenance on the plasma injection nozzles. Tight, hot, and dangerous under there, but something you have to do once a month or run an increased risk of misjumps...or worse, a plasma vent into Engineering. Merinn is looking at the power plant. It's a standard Ling model, looks new, still has *white* plastic covers on the fasteners. They get dirty and even when you keep them clean they turn gray, so the plant might be as new as it looks. The maneuver drives are clean enough to be new, but there are signs that they aren't...refurbished perhaps, but not new. The diagnostic programs have a quick mode that will return information in a few minutes, but the full mode will run for a few hours before ending with complete information on the ship systems. She then begins reading the ship's > logs from the beginning, focusing on major repairs and refits. The ship's systems have just had a major overhaul. All systems were checked, maintenance done on old equipment or replaced, in the last month. There are logs going back 36 years, but the ship's records indicate it is 44 years old. The first 8 years of logs for the ship's service are missing...that isn't really unusual, though. The maneuver drives are old, Merinn can trace them back 18 years in the logs to when they were installed replacing what were probably the original drives. They have been well-maintained...as far as the she can see from the logs. The jump drive is older, even, than that with log records going back 36 years with a notation that annual maintenance was completed and accepted by the, then, chief engineer...Howie Ransom. Seeing as this is the old style Model one jump drive it might go back as far as the ship has been in service...or even further. The power plant, otoh, is new to the ship. It was installed 10 days ago, replacing an older model that had been giving the former owners of the ship some problems. By the time you have this information, Desi will be finished with her inspection of the jump drive's plasma injection nozzles and shimmying back out. Eris Akus Moby

"Is older than god," the redhead says wiping the sweat off her brow, "but someones loved it." Desdaemona looks quickly at the early diagnostics just to make sure everything seems to be going smoothly. Then she takes a peak at the environmental systems to see if that's fired up or if it's also off line. If that's off she fires that up and starts to run diagnostics on that. ds

"Take a break!" she called, "I brought tea, sandwiches and rolls!" She moves over to an available workspace and opens the sack, pulling out some wrapped sandwiches and some sweet rolls--then went to Merinn and Desi both, handing each a styrofoam cup filled with a strong and hot black tea, sweetened almost to tooth-aching sweetness, but hot and good. "How goes it?" Paris questioned, sitting down in one of the secondary monitoring seats and taking a luxurious sip of her own tea.

Run the full modes on everything, we've got all night. Check to see if the power plant is up and running or if we're running off of local power. Then check the jump drive and see if it's up and running or if it's powered down. If it's powered up Des checks the number of run hours before powering it down, puts on the safeties, pulls off her jacket and starts to shimmie under the jump drive to take a look at the injector nozzels. That won't be required, right now, but Desi and Merinn will want to get the Power Plant into operation and start checking it out once you have the preliminary diagnostics checked out and are satisfied that it is safe to start up. > ...pulls off her jacket and starts to > shimmie under the jump drive to take a look at the injector nozzels. The space under the jump drive is just as tight and hot as you remember, and you bark your knuckle on an uncovered bolt as you move your pin light around looking at the nozzles. The nozzles, however, look clean and in order. The floats in the tell tales are centered and true. It looks like someone who knew what they were doing made adjustments recently. If the prelim diagnostics from the computer come back clean you'll be satisfied that the plasma injectors are in good shape. Eris Akus Moby

Desdaemona injects a small amount of fuel, a few litres of liquid hydrogen, into the Fusion plant so the diagnostics have something to play with as they run tests on the matrix in the compression hub. This will allow the plant to run it's basic self diagnostic and then head to the secondary step of testing the fusion chamber and the magnetic compression system. > > If it's powered up Des checks the number of run hours > > before powering it down, puts on the safeties... > > That won't be required, right now, but Desi and Merinn > will want to get the Power Plant into operation and > start checking it out once you have the preliminary > diagnostics checked out and are satisfied that it is > safe to start up. "Already," Desdaemona says from under the jump drive "I am liking the last engineer but hating this drive. Would likes to gets hands on idiot who designed this system." > The nozzles, however, look clean and in order.
