11/1111 Glisten: Launch!

The passengers and crew are all loaded and settled into place
and all of the passengers have been fed and encouraged to make
"an early evening of it." The flight plan has been filed and
accepted and the time has come for the Akus Moby to launch
from the asteroid. The crew are all at their stations...

OOC: Who is where?

...awaiting the word from Starport Control and the command
from their Captain to get under weigh.

The king is in his counting house...wait, wrong genre.

The captain is in the command chair, at the controls, getting the feel for
everything again. "Engines, waiting on the word to go here. Let me know
when you are up and ready.

Issac is sitting in the crew lounge having a beer, watching a vid.
He's got his med bag at his side, but he doesn't expect any passenger
calls until jump.

"Akus Moby, five minutes to launch. Open channel 14. Your
course to your jump point is ready for your download." is the
response from Control, "You will have a 2 minute launch
window. Inner doors closed and bay depressurization under way.
Repeat, five minutes to launch window opening,
depressurization commencing, seven minutes to close of launch
window for the ship Akus Moby."

Four minutes later, the comm squawks with your transponder
number and Control says in a clipped professional voice,
"Sixty seconds to launch, repeat sixty seconds to launch."

As the synchronized clocks tick down to zero, Kirkor brings
the maneuver drive up and when the launch window opens, the
comm squawks again, "Akus Moby, outer doors opening and your
launch window is open. Have a good trip!"

On the screen Kirkor sees the doors open and sees the green
lights indicating the gravitic mooring contacts have
disengaged freeing the ship to move on its own.

"Acknowleged, Control", says Sharda, manning the comm console.

"Acknowleged.", she says, very businesslike.

"Thank you and thank you also for your system's hospitality, Glisten
Control," says the Vilani IN the clinical-sounding yet unerringly
polite tone of voice which is quite characteristic of her people.

Sharda looked to her captain, clearly deferring to him.

Des looks over her data pad and takes a bite of the dried
Vargr meat product. She looks carefully at all the system
readings to confirm that everything is well within tollerance
limits.

If everything looks good she key's up her mic, "Is all good
back here Captain."

"Did you feel that, Sharda? As that ancient, Julius Erving wrote, 'Cry
Havoc, and slip the bonds of captivity!' That is the feel of freedom!" He
chuckles at the thought of Giordi in that great spoof 'Galaxyquest' as he
slipped out of the dock and scraped down the side of the space station.

"Glisten, we have departed," he says, turning on the maneuvers and pushing
forward into the inky blackness of free space. "Akus Moby, out."

"As it should be." He keys the mic for everyone, "This is the Captain. We
are underway, folks. It will be approximately (XX) hours until we reach our
jump point. Relax, and enjoy the journey. Captain Out." He lays in the
coordinates for the jump point, engages the computer and grins at Sharda.
"Third star to the right, and continue til morning, right?"

Sharda smiled a little, but almost seemed like she didn't really
understand that the captain was getting all wound up about.
"Um...yes. We've left the mooring, have we not?"

Her grin widened just a bit a little as she popped the course up on
her workstation. "Well, for the next , at any rate."

As the ship moves smoothly away from the rock and toward the

She keeps a casual eye on the readings as they head towards the
jump point. Des isn't expecting anything to go wrong but then
again this is a new ship to her and one can't be to cautious.

Up in the pax areas, Paris bustled about, ensuring that everyone was settled and happy; she busied herself settling out the evening's repast--it wouldn't be ready to serve until an hour after Jump, but still...

...small snacks and drinks were the order of the day; preparing and gauging her job as it seemed to be balanced against the initial impressions made by the passengers was the order of the day...

...and she was looking forward to taking off her shoes and moping about in the galley in her bunny slippers after everyone up here went to bed.

About a half hour before jump, Issac goes up to the pax areas, finds
Paris. "Any of the passengers jump newbies, or want some antinausea

Paris gave him a smile and smoothed her skirts; "Thank you," she said, "I've not been thinking--everything else has been so overwhelming."

She picked up the small comm microphone and announced, "Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to introduce our Doctor, Dr Issac Chowdhury, who is offering, for those in need, anti-nausea medications of the pre-jump variety." She paused. "He will remain in the central area for the next twenty minutes--and would like to let you know that he has medical illness calls each morning at 0800 ship's time, as well as on-call response as needed for emergencies."

There was an emphasis on the word 'emergency'.

Paris hung the microphone and looked at Isaac. "Good?"

Lord and Lady Johanson are both in the lounge. Lord Saul is
chatting with Pender Louis and Jon Smith about the unsettled
conditions in District 268 and the effects that might have on
the development of that area by Imperial interests.

Lady Jane is talking with Penny and Margie...the two young
woman travelling together...about setting up a bridge game.
Lonnie Morris, a tall good looking young man agrees to be
their fourth. Penny is a rather plain young woman in her
early 20's with light brown hair and shallow skin. Margie,
otoh, is more attractive with a shock of red curls and green
eyes, she might also be a year of two younger than Penny.
Paris gets the impression that Penny is the leader of the two,
as she seems to be the one that always takes the lead in
everything with Margie following along behind her.

Lord Percy comes out of his cabin to join the others. He still
seems quiet, perhaps somewhat depressed, but he begins to make
small talk with the other passengers in the lounge. Paris
notices that he seems somewhat "interested" in Margie, as is
the passenger Lonnie Morris.

Lady Jane raises her hand, "Aye! I'm afraid I'm not a hardy
jumper. I'll be taking advantage of Dr. Chodhury's offer *and*
spending some time in my stateroom."

Penny says, "We've got our own anti-jump sickness
pills...Margie and I."

Margie nods smiling, "Took them before we came out of our
stateroom. Thank you for the offer, though."

None of the men profess a need for the medications, but Lord
Percy comes over to Paris a bit later and whispers, "If I'm
not blotto, then I'll need your pills, but I'd rather have a
fifth of vodka and a dark cabin with a soft bed to lie on."

OOC: Guess I have too! :) I've been watching a mystery a
night for the last few weeks alternating among Peter
Whimsey's, Midsomer Murders, Perry Mason, The Saint, Poirot,
Rosemary & Thyme, Inspector Allyn, Sherlock Holmes, and Miss
Marple. That's my summertime viewing fare, over 300 hours of
viewing excellence, and even repeating them is better than
what's available on the air. And now PBS is running some new
Mystery episodes (Jericho, Foyle's War, Miss Marple) on Sunday
nights, too! However, I'm probably not planning a ship board
murder...right now...so you don't have to worry *too* much
about that. :)

ERK! I wish I had that time to watch tube--well, i do at work, but we're rather redneck here--we watch CSI, pro wrestling, and a lot of "Ultimate Ninja" contests.

I'm happy when I get them to put our tube on this side of the room on the weather channel.

"Is still all look good back here Boss." Des says into her
mic.
She goes back to making notes about weak spots in the hull based on first hand knowledge and structural designs.
"You
want's drink before we jump?" Desdaemona asks Merrin. "Coffee, Tea, somethings like that?"

OOG: As a note, there is, in the galley, a continuously maintained hot water pot for tea (complete with teabags), coffee always on and refreshed about every six hours or when needed, and midrats composed of sandwiches and snack-cakes for the crew. Er, actually no. It got to the list just fine. It was the delivery to

I'm guessing an internal hiccup. Bellsouth accepted it for delivery
(you'll note the bounce came from Bellsouth's mailer-daemon, not the
Phoenyx's) which should mean there was nothing wrong with the SMTP
transaction between us and them. After that I can only rely on what their
server said, which as you saw was remarkably little.

Issac walks over to her, pills a small medicine cup from his bag,
looks over her to estimate her weight and gives her the appropriate
dosage, all in a somewhat perfunctory manner. He is, after all, more
used to doling the things out in a chow line to newbie Marines.

"Thank you Doctor." Lady Jane says cupping the pills in her
hand, "Now if everyone will excuse me, I will retire to my
stateroom until after the unpleasantness is over."

After Lady Jane leaves the lounge, Penny and Margie approach
Paris and Issac.

"I say!" says Penny, "If we have enough people interested,
what about organizing a bridge tournament for our trip?
Something to keep us all entertained."

She nodded again, subserviently. "You're quite welcome, miladies--there will be a light meal this eve for those that desire such, and full breakfast to be served tomorrow at 0800, ship's time."

As the ship travels toward the jump point, Des and Mirren
prepare the jump drive for operation. The power plants are
brought to full power and the capacitors charged...it will
take 20 minutes to fully charge the capacitors, and they can
hold that charge without discharging for a couple of hours, so
charging them up early, just in case, is SOP. The jump netting
on the hull is powered up, checked (for the nth time) and put
into standby mode. The lanthanum rods and the zuchai crystals
are double and triple checked as you await the big moment.

Everything in engineering looks like a "go for jump."

OOC: I guess Greg is busy with his basement, so I'll jump in
here...

Sasha nods at Sharda and pluses the grav drive controls
pushing the ship out of the docking bay. Seconds later, the
ship in open space, you can see the bay doors sliding closed
behind you.

The Captain engages the maneuver drive and the ship arcs away
from the rock. To all sides of the corridor the ship is
travelling you can see, both visually and on the sensors,
boats and ships of all size flitting about to and fro among
the asteroids of this cluster.

Glacing at the screen, you can see that your jump point is an
hour and 12 minutes away at 1 g. Glisten moves ships well
away from the heavily trafficed areas around the habited
clusters before giving them permission to jump out. Ships
jumping in also target areas well away from the high traffic
areas.

Des is back in engineering her feet up on a workstation reading a
data pad. She's chewing vigerously on some kind of Vargr dried
meat product which she's washing down with a clear blue plastic
bottle of carbinated mineral water.

Des
