10/1118 Overnale: Landing

The ship makes orbit and receives landing directions in short order. Sasha takes the ship down through the thin atmosphere. As the ship descends Sasha and Sharda, on the bridge, notice a huge typhoon spinning across the ocean. Overnale is only a little over 40% water covered, but both poles are landlocked, and much of the temperate and tropical area is covered by a vast ocean that completely circles the planet. Settled areas on Overnale are a chain of islands and a narrow fringe of the southern coast of the northern super-continent. The starport is on Griffin Island, the largest of the islands and the nearest to the mainland.

The ship flies across this island chain as it descends, and after circling the landing field once lands the ship on a large concrete pad at the starport.

While Paris and Bart are helping the middle and high passengers debark Doc is "defrosting" the low passengers. It takes him a bit of time, but he does his job well and none ..that's 850 credits from the low lottery that won't go to any of the defrostees.

Sharda sends out messages to Killian & Sons, Brown Brokers and Robert Solasksi about the freight being delivered. She and Sasha can look into selling the construction equipment the crew bought, but first they need to see to delivering the freight that was entrusted to them....and Sasha will need to field the visit from the local officials, he wonders if on this planet they *expect* bribes like on Glisten.

Merrin and Des go through standard shutdown procedures back in Engineering. For the standard landing fee the ship will be able to draw standby power from the local grid as well as connect to the local network. This port has some repair facilities and refined fuel available.

While Krikor is fielding Merrin's call, Sharda is fielding a call from the Starport Terminal. A Lt. Sandoff is requesting a courtesy call on the Captain for a port inspection.

"Rodger that, Merinn," he says. "I'll tell you when we're ready here," he adds, and finishes getting the ship ready to switch over. "Switching to external power, Sharda," he says before continuing to Merinn with "switch it over, Merinn".

Both see on the comm board that there are more calls waiting for you, one from Killian and one from Robert Solasksi.

"Yes, Captain." Merinn begins the procedure to transfer to groundside power and shuts down the powerplant.

When the last passenger is off, Paris slumps tiredly against the bulkhead and smiles at Bart. "My friend, thank you--you've been a lifesaver--and have you ever been fishing?"

Bart has been fishing, but not deep sea fishing. :)

Paris and Bart stand at the open hatchway looking out at the Lorton Starport. The air is cool, crisp, but thin with a hint of salt in it, The local gravity is only a little over half standard, enough to keep your feet down where they belong, but little enough to make moving around a pleasure. The port here is small...you can see only a few landing pads, and most are empty. What looks like another few pads are out beyond a high chainlink fence with tangle wire along its top...military base, maybe? The local time is late afternoon and a few lights are beginning to come on in the buildings here.

As you stand there a small ground car leaves the terminal area and comes across the tarmac toward your ship, pulling to a halt just below the hatch where Paris and Bart are standing. A short, stout, young woman steps out from the driver's side and looks up at you.

The woman is dressed in the Starport Authority uniform of a lieutenant. She reaches inside the vehicle and picks up her hat, which she plops onto her head, a briefcase. Then she walks swiftly toward the gangway leading up to the hatch.

Her voice is high pitched as she looks up and calls out to you from the foot of the stairs, "Lieutenant Urquart of the ISA requests permission to come aboard."

OOC: Partly answered in another post, but...

"There are a few local laws and regs I need to go over with your crew." Kathy Urquart says then adds, "Also need to see your papers, cargo manifest...make sure you aren't importing anything that the locals would go nuts over...nuts in a bad way.

"It shouldn't take more than a few minutes." she says glancing at her wrist watch and looking up grinning, "I'm off duty in an hour and there's a cold beer waiting for me at the local Brubakers."

"Oh yea," Bart says taking his eyes from the young woman he hits the intercom button, "For your evening entertainment, we have a special guest this afternoon. A HOT young, umm ... well ... local, yea local will thrill us with local customs and tell us all about what umm... well... a sites of interest are good. The event will be followed by Brew from Brubakers, where they grill a good steak. Yes, that means YOU, people. In the lounge, move quick or you'll miss the pictures of the infected, swollen with puss, cankered, nasty, um... well... privates. You all know. It's the rotting pleasures brief. Or you might even get duty rather than learning about where the best meat hou.. umm... well... umm steaks are good."

Flicking off the switch, "Mouse this shit is tough, are the passengers all gone yet?"

Paris covered her mouth with her hand, her eyes went wide and her shoulders shook--but she kept the laughter quiet.

Flicking off the switch, "Mouse this shit is tough, are the

passengers all gone yet?"

Her shoulders shook a bit more and she fought to regain control.

"Gee, I hope they are," Merinn shakes her head and takes a long drink of tea. "That's good, Paris. Thanks."

"You're welcome, Meri," Paris replied, "and yes, Bart, all the passengers are gone, thank you." She disappeared back into the galley--there was a snorted gale of laughter and she reappeared, her face placid again and this time, she had cookies and other light snacks upon a tray. "Help yourself," she announced to all.

The Lt. seems amused with your antics.

Paris put the tray down and stepped up to the former Marine. "Bart," she said, hands on hips imperiously, "please behave--and be nice to the doctor, you never know when his services might come in handy."

She only came up to the middle of his chest.

Glancing down at Bart's sidearm she adds, "Your first time on Overnale?"

"Lorton and Giffin Island have *really* serious laws against private weapon ownership, so please don't try to take your sidearm...or anything more serious than a butter knife through the externaty zone. I'd hate to find out you were dead or locked away for 50 years."

She looks from Bart to Paris and back, "There are a few local laws and regs I need to go over with your crew, if you don't mind."

Urquart adds with a smile, "Saves time and trouble later."

"I'm sure--I'm rather," Paris said, ushering the Lieutenant aboard--with a nod at Bart to keep an eye upon her--and not the swing of the woman's rear either--"surprised that such a list of local restrictions was not transmitted prior to landing."

A shrug. "This is our central crew lounge," Paris said, seating the Lieutenant, "Bart, would you summon the crew and I'll get something to drink for all?"

She stepped into the open galley--the corner of her eye still on the local officer--trust went a long way, but only as far as you let it go.

Lt. Urquart sets her briefcase on the table and takes out a padd and several sheets of paper, "Nothing for me." she calls to Paris, "But if all of you would like to join me for a drink at Brubaker's this evening, I'd be honored."

"Brubaker's?" Krikor says coming into the galley. "Drinks at Brubaker's? They grill good steaks too?" he asks, holding out his hand. "I'm Krikor," he explains, "captain of this crew. Welcome aboard."

"Well then," Krikor says as the crew is gathered. "We are at your disposal. Here are the documents you need," he indicates the necessary records that Paris had pulled, "and when you are done, I have a couple of logistic type questions."

Lt. Nancy Urquart stands and says, "First, welcome to Overnale. My name is Lieutenant Urguart of the Imperial Starport Authority. The official starport here on Overnale is here at Lorton and the ISA is, naturally, in charge within the limits of the port, and that includes the 'startown' inside the port's fences. Our authority does *not* extend to the port at Parlek, nor outside the fences in Lorton territory, nor elsewhere on the planet."

She draws a breath then continues, "I tell you this, because Lorton has some *very* restrictive...stringent even...laws. Especially concerning weapons. Please, don't get caught with *any* sort of weapon outside the externaty lines or you'll be facing a long, long stretch in the penal farms."

"The rest of the countries on this planet have much less severe laws concerning weapons, and you can get information about
