Celandra is a game in which the players take the roles of societies, rather than playing individual characters. The players will invent a society with its culture and heritage, and will guide its development and interaction with the world. Emphasis will be be placed on developing a detailed history of Celandra, along with myths and legends.

[Cel] Cel - Elyria Revived

Gentlemen,

I have been playing in Qaiyoure for a few months now and enjoy the
world enough to try and revive Elyria. I have spoken to Juuso and he
expressed approval for exploring the possibility w/ you, the former
players about reopening the game. Jason Heaps has also expressed a
willingness to assist in the GMing while I am getting my feet wet.
The start-up time will be not occur for at least a month, perhaps
more. I have just found out my September will be extremely busy at
work. During this time, I would like to talk to interested players
about future plots and changes in their societies. The calendar will be
pushed forward several years to conform to the current year in Qaiyoure,
giving you some extra development time/actions to play with.
My current thought is to have a turn every 3 weeks. Extensions will
be granted if asked otherwise actions maybe written for your country. I
will be flexible and I would also like to encourage the game to keep
moving. I have a gaming background and currently play several games of
Diplomacy & at least one role-playing game on-line. I have also been GM
before for several different role-playing systems.
My hope is to have as many of the players close together on the map
as possible to allow for interaction. New players will be encouraged to
start close to established societies. I will have some major plot lines
going and I would really like to encourage as much interaction between
all of you as possible.

Nathan,

Jason mentioned your interest. Let's find out what the old player
wants to do and then we shall see. If you & Jason start working
together closely, such an alliance would create an interesting new power
center on the map. I do have some concerns about game balance if that
occurs but I am not going to rule it out. There are plenty of other
nations to play if Aloria is not available.

Nathan,

The Alorians have not been heard from yet. As I have mentioned I
have some concerns about friends, such as you & Jason allying strongly.
The magic of the Fae combined w/ a large cooperative army could be
pretty overpowering. I am not saying it will happen, I am examining the
possibility that it could. Especially at the beginning of the game this
could potentially stifle the early developmental play among the other
players as they attempt to respond to such a powerful alliance.
I could be worrying unjustly, so if anyone has an opinion on this I
would be interested in hearing it. If there is a consensus that would
prefer another alternative would you be willing to operate and choose
another society. In the end, we do need a PC in Aloria, so you may
indeed be the best choice. Opinions requested, please.

O frabjous day! Caloo, callay! I'd love to return to Elyria. I may play Cedonia,
but my heart is in Keland-Northmarch. =) There were so many loose plot threads
left behind when Elyria shut down . . . the situation in the Eleven Cities; the
prophecy of the velok, Sarian; the civil war in Keland-Northmarch; the secret
rebellion against Aloria in Turunas; and, of course, the internal politics of
the Tyrean Empire.

I also like the fact that we'll be re-synching with Qaiyore . . . if we go
ahead with this, should we just submit a description of our society's evolution
over the intervening years to GM approval? I think that would be simplest.

Well, how small of an area should we focus on first? My society was the
small information gathering socitiey in the Eleven cities. Working at any
size dosn't really bother me. In fact, even at this point I wouldnt mind
being a sub-society, and grow from there, or pick a new one if times
require it.

How much time difference was there? Can we plan and decide what happen, or
should we play with a larger turn until we catch up?

Jeff,

As mentioned the center of things for the moment appears like it
will be Aloria/Fae/Eleven Cities so your old society could fit in
perfectly. I am not sure of the exact time difference, my impression
has been 5-6 years, but I will check or if anyone figures it out, please

I must confess I am still studying the map and the societies and get

I could pick up some society or another from the Eleven cities area. A
duchy, for example, or Taseleth. And I could submit (some) actions for
some NPS:s (like the Grand Duke and his associates).

There was some event which ties the timelines together. The Qaiyore
magicians did something to drive Alatta away, a concentrated effort
of some sort - but I can't remember exactly what it was...

I suppose I should act as some kind of counterbalance for Jason, lest his
imagination overtake him. As to whether this is Duke Helemur, Duke
Benemeth or Duke Embereth does not really matter. Each of them has
their benefits. After the situation balances, I might be tempted
to try my hand on Blackburg or some of its mage societies. But
for the time being, I might try my hand on ducal politics.

I did some checking on the websites . . . the last action in Elyria was in 2833
A.C. This works out to about seven game years in the past. It will, presumably,
be eight years by the time we get completely underway.

I am always willing to listen to any ideas that you have. At the
moment, the center of this game looks like it will be around the Eleven
Cities, Aloria & the Fae (Jason & Nathan). Andrew seemed to indicate
that he might be more interested in the Keland-Northmarch area. I would
like to encourage the players to be close enough to interact w/ each
other. As the more players come in we can expand the map.

I'm interested; how about I play Ardrian a'Olaron?

It's relatively central to the area, it's been an NPS, and (most importantly
to me ;) it's not middle eastern and isolationist, so it's a nice change
from Qaiyore. ;)

It appears to have been left in quite a state of flux; I have some ideas on
how to work that out, but I'll have to read more of the backstory and talk

Note that it is also at the moment a province of Aloria. I'm afraid

Thanks; I didn't realize this when I sent in my mail message, but I did
track down the actions later.

It seems to me that the rebellion was not strongly put down, the religion is
still in resurgence because of the natural disasters, and it's been eight
years - the Ardrians might have thrown off the yoke of Alorian oppression.

I could also start it off as a split society and see what happens - one
action for the puppet government, one action for the rebels, one action for
the priesthood, and one action that moved around. The Alorian garrision
could also act.

There's also the question of - is the Alorian High King the same guy? If
the Alorian High King has died in the time-skip, then it would be much
harder for them to maintain their conquests.

I was playing the Free Kelanders/Kingdom of Keland(the politics were very
murky). When the game ended, the economy of northern Elyria had just collapsed,
Keland and Northmarch had tentatively unified, and we were resuming contact
with the Eleven cities--the Sorceror had cut us off.

I'd like to resume playing Keland . . . I have some ideas about how the
country may have developed in the intervening time.

Everything is possible. But there was a strong garrison of alorians in
Ardrian at the time.

Playing a split society is fun (I did that for a moment with Eleven
cities), but you have to be flexible enough to be able to support
all sides, and be prepared to change your plans if the dice just don't
favour them.

For example, in Eleven cities after the Sorcerer had been defeated I tried
to raise and unify the Calarrian church. The dice decided otherwise,
though: almost all actions of the church failed miserably, and they
ended up even more split up then before...

> There's also the question of - is the Alorian High King the same guy? If

IMHO, if Aloria switches players, the High King should be changed
(Arakus is Eric's character, and if a new player takes Eric's place,
it is only fair to change the High King, too). Besides, at the
time of the new game starting, Arakus would have been High King for
38 years, meaning he would be about 70 years old. Assuming
Eric doesn't come back, the new player could start with the
funeral of Arakus...

Couple of quick notes for Elyria

Since there have so far been no strong objections to Nathan taking
over Aloria. Nathan please start working out details for the
intervening 8 years to bring them up to date.

For everyone - will making up the intervening time, please leave
room in your plans for alternatives. I will be will be reviewing
everyone's ideas and throwing some dice for results and some events
dice. (Mother Nature still runs her course)

Finally, one or two ideas have been presented for societies w/
strange & magical creatures. They are excellent ideas and Elyria
strives to be a reality based fantasy world. My preference is for
societies that will be able to interact w/ the other players on a turn
to turn basis & societies that are balanced in their design. (Example -
The Fae are strongly magical but are balanced by their small size and
other limitations). In designing, please keep more towards the
realities of a medieval world w/ some magic and that allows for contact
w/ other societies.
All ideas will be reviewed and I will not automatically reject
anyone's outline, I am stating my preferences as GM. If the idea is not
accepted, please keep it around, who knows there maybe another time,
another continent or world where we can use it.
