Celandra is a game in which the players take the roles of societies, rather than playing individual characters. The players will invent a society with its culture and heritage, and will guide its development and interaction with the world. Emphasis will be be placed on developing a detailed history of Celandra, along with myths and legends.

Hey Michelle,

I have some more Q’s a few comments.

If they have been leading a nomadic existence and if they want to migrate
then the Amur could not really farm.

Why are the warriors only men? If they have primary succession with women
being able to hold positions of power, then why couldn’t they also be
warriors? There are plenty of historical references to female tribal
warriors. There is a Siberian “Queen” that was on NOVA
www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/transcripts/2517siberian.html. And National
Geographic had an article on a Scythian burial procession:
http://www.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/9609/depart/btart_splash015.html.

A general rule of thumb for gender percentage is 52% Female. I would say
that for a tribal horse nomad society that all able bodied men would bear
arms (but in this case maybe the women as well) so that would give about

Are you sure that the population is only 2000? Although 50,000 is a very
large number, 2000 is quite small. I would suggest a population around
6,000 - large enough to not be too bothered, but not big enough to attract
too much attention. Of course this will greatly affect the amount of land
that they require to support themselves. You also need to think about the
farming thing… if they nomadic it simply won’t happen. If they are
semi-nomadic, then they will probably follow the cycle of wild crops that
are available in their range.

As far as the mythology goes…Great! I just have one question. How do they
explain the events of 2844? I look forward to seeing how you will
incorporate that into the Amur mythology.

Just a few things to think about.

Hi people! I'm very glad to see more people on here! I was afraid I'd only be

Anyway, on with the work:

I never said the women never fight. They're just not expected to if they don't

I can go with a pop of 6,000. As far as farming goes, I agree with Kyle (I
think that's the right guy. If you're reading this, I really appreciate the
input!) on the subject of them staying fairly put over the summer months. In
either case, I was never intending them to be completely dependant on crops,
but more so on their livestock (goats and horses). If you do decide to let me
have those few months of 'settlement', I would only want a couple of my tribes
to go as far as to grow wheat, though I'd want all my tribes to have small
gardens of herbs and edible gourds.

I'm not sure about that part. Would they know about all that happened on the
East coast? (I need help here!)

Don't worry, mate, these things take time to get started. I find they tend to snowball:)

Eric had written: "Why are the warriors only men? If they have primary succession with women being able to hold positions of power, then why couldn't they also be
warriors? There are plenty of historical references to female tribal warriors."

Michelle replied: "I never said the women never fight. They're just not expected to if they don't want to, and the women who want to fight do so."

I would say to this, that the rulership of a nation, and who fights, have nothing to do with each-other. For example, commonly nations are ruled by old men, yet it's not old men who go fight! For every example of women warriors you give me, I can give you three examples of women leaders who sent men only to fight. Such as: Golda Meir (Yom Kippu War, Israel), Indira Ghandhi (1972, Bangledesh War), Mggie Thatcher (1982, Falklands War). This last actively opposed women entering combat roles in the military during her entire leadership.

For ancient examples, Makeda, Queen of Sheba (Yemen War), Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt (Roman Civil War)...

That said, of course Michelle should have women warriors if she wants. I would suggest, though, that in ancient/medieval societies, there's a very good reaosn we don't see many women going into wars: it destroys your society. If you lose half your young men, they just go polygamous, and that keeps the birth rate up. But lose half your young women...

Note, I speak here not of what I believe to be right or proper, simply, of what usually happened: women did not fight. They were carried off as loot by the victor.

best regards,

Kyle

Hi,

Okay...let's put the number at 6000 and have the Amura more semi-nomadic,
travelling between seasonal sites, just off the map to the East. During the
last few decades the harsh winters (caused by the Sorcerers growing power)
has made them travel farther and farther a field, making them more nomadic.
Since the Sorcerers death the climate has settled down some that they have
arrived at the eastern edge of the map. Let's put their range right on the
(Nomadic Herders) marker that is between the 40 and 50 degrees lattitude on
the map.

Hi Michelle,

I think that a terran analogue (males onely) would have 1/4 to 1/3 as a
standing fighting force, depending on the level of conflict between the
neighbors. If you wanted to include females then it could go as high as 1/2
to 2/3 of the people. I think that a good ball-park number would be 1000
light cavalry and 1000 auxilary cavalry as the standing military force.

Hi Eric,

Sorry I haven't written in a while, I've been grounded from the computer. I'll
try to make up for that with lots of tribal detail.

Since the pop is 6,000 now, I'd like to lower the number of tribes from 12 to
6. Would that be okay? I've figured out some details for the six tribes I want.
They all have a lot in common, only having one or two areas of big difference.
Also, all but the Jemedi grow their own medicinal herbs, and gourds. (Just to
make sure you understand the difference in that area.)

The Udo is the largest tribe. They're pretty 'average' Amurans, aside from
their rigid code of honor in battle. They highly disapprove of gorilla (sp?)
tactics and consider killing unarmed enemies cowardly. (I'm not sure if you
need more, just tell me if you do.)

The Ebari is the second largest tribe. They grow grain and are the most
agricultural tribe. Of all the Amurans, their artists are the most skilled with
cloth, weaving, and basketry crafts.

The Jemedi are the most nomadic tribe. They don't settle down to raise crops at
all, gaining all their food through either hunting and gathering or from other
tribes, either from trade or warefare. They're the most skilled in both riding
and working leather. Their horses are easily recognisable due to elaborate
decoration. This is the smallest tribe, and the only one that regularly takes
part in trade.

The Iquo is a small grain-growing tribe. (They don't grow as much as the Ebari,
of course.) They're the most skilled in herbal medicine.

The Amanin are the only tribe that fishes. This is the third largest tribe.
They believe themselves to be a superior people. The other tribes only put up
with them as comrades because their large numbers and the fact that they make
the best weapons in Amura -- they're the only tribe advanced enough to have
bows -- would make them much more dangerous as enemies. The Amanin, in turn,
only joined the other tribes under Amur because their numbers are too small to
conquer five other tribes through war, and they want to at least exercise some
control over their 'inferior, barbaric neighbours' through the council
representative.

I don't have a name yet for my final tribe; I'm thinking Massani, or something
along that line. This tribe is hardly any smaller than the Amanin at this time,
and they are the most feared in battle, despite the larger tribe's weapons
skills. This is because of their battle tactics. They fight gorilla style, and
since they're the only tribe who does so other than when forced, they are very
skilled at it. They also use supersticious fear to their advantage by going
naked into battle with masks made from animal skulls over their faces; this is
how some Amurans believe evil spirits take physical form. It seems like the
spirits favor this tribe, and at least half of Amura's shamans come from them.
Even the non-shamans from this tribe can usually gain small blessings for
themselves from the spirits. They are generally a friendly tribe when
interacting with others, but this usually doesn't happen more often than
necessary. They prefer to remain reclusive, which leads to more fear from
outsiders. The Udo generally dislike them because of their war tactics, but the
other tribes mostly regard them with respect and sometimes awe due to their
power over the spirits and their congenial nature.

I hope that's all okay and makes sense. Ask me anything if you have doubts or
questions. I also want to say, in regard to the last e-mail over my society,
that I want 1/3 of the military force to be female and 2/3 to be male.

I have one more question. I was reminded to ask this after seeing that guy
(already forgot his name) wants to write up all that's happened in the game.
I've actually had this society developing in my head for many years now and
would hate to lose any rights over it outside the game. I understand that if I
left the game later, someone else would probably play it (and I'm fine with
that), but my question is this: If I play a character or culture in an RPG,
could I get in any trouble if I was to do anything outside the game with it?
Like publishing an online comic based on it, or posting or publishing stories
centered on it? Just my culture, I mean. Not anyone else's from the game. I
just want to make sure, so if someone here sees an online comic about Amura
five years from now, nobody will be upset.

I forgot to ask, after we sort out the tribe details, will my society be ready
for play? I'm starting to feel eager to actually try this IH thing out! =^.^=

Also, I forgot to say that the Jemedi trades most often with the Ebari. The
Ebari, in turn, often try to grow just a little too much grain each year so
they can trade with the Jemedi when they need good-quality tack. The Jemedi
don't really have land of their own either, since they're always on the move.
(Can you tell they were inspired by the Gypsies?)

Short version: no problem.

Long one: We have no written copyright policy, so all is juridically as
per default on electronical mailing lists. (Actually I would be interested
to know what the default actually is...). Some players have put copyrights
over their material, but of course such copyright covers only their
societies. In principle, I'm thinking along these lines:
 - everyone has unlimited right to use their own material, including
   commercial use
 - everyone has a right to use other material (general, other players),
   too, unless
     * the stuff is copyrighted
     * it's clearly a rip-off (ie. direct and (almost) complete copy
of some society/story/IH-rules), and the intent is to get
       commercial benefits from its use
Even in the latter case, a permission is likely if you ask nicely.
 - In any case, acknowledgements for the original author(s) in the case
   of reuse is expected.

Disclaimer: Qaiyore GM might see things differently. Perhaps.

[Cel] [mo' copyright info for Michelle]

"Individual list messages are copyrighted by the original poster; the
compilations are copyrighted by the list owners or the Phoenyx itself and
may be downloaded for personal perusal but not re-published without
permission. Please contact webster @phoenyx.net if you would like to do so -
contrary to the old saw, it is easier to get permission than forgiveness."
That's the official starting line from our host.

Ideas and information are exempt from copyright. As creator of your work,
copyright law (U.S.) gives you "the right to print, reprint and copy the
work; to sell or distribute copies of the work; to prepare 'derivative
works' (dramatizations, translations, musical arrangements, novelizations,
etc.); torecord the work; and to perform or display (the works) publically.
These rights give (the creator) control over how the work is used."

Celandra (as a setting and shared world project) exists under an (implied)
unrestricted, non-exclusive, shared copyright. That is to say, as near as I
can determine, legally anything which makes up Celandra (setting, societies,
world history, major characters, etc.) can be used by anyone involved. By
posting the information to the list, we voluntarily waive our "intellectual
property" rights. By posting, we have chosen to make these things freely
available to everyone's use.

So, the world is a shared copyright with waived intellectual property
protects. Specific posts are automatically copywritten to the author. What
does that mean in English? It means that what you have to watch out for is
not copyright violation but plagiarism. Use the setting all you want (and
any details that are intrinsic to the setting) but don't copy anyone's
specific stories. For example, if you want to use the Eerith (a Qai
society) in your story, there is no problem. The physical descriptions,
general nature of the society, that floating city I can't spell as a
setting, major personalities, etc. are all part of the world and are,
therefore, fair game. If you want to use a specific part of the Canto of
Fire (a story told on the list about the Eerith), you have to have express
written consent from the author. The basic reasoning is: we want to
encourage as much development of the world, in whatever creative form you
like, as freely and openly as possible but at the same time, we want to
prevent someone ripping off another persons hard work. Think in terms of
plagiarism rather than copyright and intellectual property. (The "for
commercial purposes" is a bit of an indulgent grey area. For example:
never do anything for the purpose of making money off of Celandra but, if
you self-publish something and sell enough copies to cover your expenses,
not only am I not opposed, I'm happy for you because that means that what
you did was really good. If you ever decide to do something like that,
though, definitely talk to the list and get permission first.)

That's the best I can put together. Obviously, since I am considering
publication of the Eerith Chronicles, I have a vested interest in getting it
right and I've done my homework. (That's why the money discussion makes me
uncomfortable. I'm looking at publishing the collected Eerith stories as a
convenience to the people who want a copy but I'd not turn down money from
strangers who wants to buy one. I'm sorry, I know that sounds shallow but
I'm poor and I'm paying the publication costs myself. If I could, I'd pay
to print a free copy for everyone on the list but I can't. I hope everyone
understands. Okay, enough side-tracking.)

The shortest version is: yes, what Jusso said BUT:
1-Ask our host (pheonyx.net) for permission or at least to determine if they
need anything special.
2-Absolutely always give credit to anyone who you can find who might have
been involved. If you ask who you can and credit everyone, then the worst
you can be accused of is forgetting someone (which is not a crime). I'd
suggest simply preparing a generic statement to put with your stuff such as:

"Celandra (and its general content) is a shared world project, used with
permission. It is a collaboration of a large number of individual
contributors and this author claims no exclusive rights to Celandra or its
general contents. Though certainly not a complete list of all the wonderful
people who have contributed to the development of this project, this author
would like to acknowledge the following individuals for specific
contributions which have enriched the specific work presented here: (list
everyone you can think of). The author would like to apologize in advance
to anyone who may have been missed in the above listing. It is certainly
not a complete list and this author is deeply grateful to everyone who has
contributed to the Celandra project over the years." (If anyone can think
of improvements or modifications to this disclaimer, let me know.)

Scared yet? Don't be. I'm just trying to give you as much help as possible
to be completely ironclad. Nothing ruins your day faster than some fool who
e-mails you a flame threatening to sue because you used a name similar to
one he used in something you never read. Do what you want, give credit,
have fun, and let us know where we can go to look at it and enjoy it as
well. Sorry to run on so long.
M. Keaton

Anyways, if I actually do create something based off this game, I probably
wouldn't even have my culture organized enough to start on it for half a year,
at the very least. I always pictured any story based off of Amura centering
around internal conflict, so other culters wouldn't be overly involved anyway.

Thanks again for clearing that all up, guys!

Hello, all. I was just wondering, what happened to our game? I've not heard
anything about Elyria for a very long time. Will we ever finish with our
culture creations and actually play?

I don't know about Elyria. As for Qai (looks embarrased, scuffs foot) I
changed computers and lost a bunch of e-mail. I know that all of the turns
for the past year were resolved and the new game year was started before the
holidays but I don't remember the current game year (and the archives have
rolled over so it isn't on there either). I'll try to get the info off of
my old computer and repost the start of the current qai year and the events.
Thank you for your patience.

Anyone happen to know what's happening with Elyria? I
play Nomia, and the only other society was that of
Juuah (sp?), as far as I can tell, the GM's gone AWOL
and that's all there is to it.

Aye, I haven't heard from Eric, either. I'm trying to contact him,
but it seems probable that Elyria is once again GMless... Somehow,
the game seems to eat GMs. I wonder how, and why?
