Celandra is a game in which the players take the roles of societies, rather than playing individual characters. The players will invent a society with its culture and heritage, and will guide its development and interaction with the world. Emphasis will be be placed on developing a detailed history of Celandra, along with myths and legends.

I got inspired today and the following song is the result. I tune isn't my
own invention, but I can't find now what it is. (Figures that when I use a
tune not of my invention I can't reference it. It's similar to "Angels from the
realms of glory" and is almost certainly a traditional Anglican hymn if anyone
cares to help me find it.) Further deities may be added.

(And yes, I did create Demerhaze out of nothing. She just seemed to fit.)

-----

Masters of the realms of dreaming,
Won't you be with us this night.
With your power and mighty seeming,
Pleased to lend your glorious might.
(From our foes and ill protect us.
Grant us strength that we endure.
We are honored to adore you.
Let our praise sing loud and sure.)

Lord of Tempest and of Fury,
Bearer of the sky's dark wall,
We are blinded by your glory,
God of weather, King Marmdal.
(From our foes and ill protect us.
Grant us strength that we endure.
We are honored to adore you.
Let our praise sing loud and sure.)

Lady of the realm of wizards,
Patron of the Isle of Mir,
Let our mages sing your praises,
That no magic we need fear.
(From our foes and ill protect us.
Grant us strength that we endure.
We are honored to adore you.
Let our praise sing loud and sure.)

Lady of the Dark and Children,
All is known beneath your gaze.
No ill shall escape your notice,
Vengeance goddess, Demerhaze.
(From our foes and ill protect us.
Grant us strength that we endure.
We are honored to adore you.
Let our praise sing loud and sure.)

Health of Body and of Spirit,
Blessed are we to obtain.
Lucia, Goddess we adore you,
Patron of that noble twain.
(From our foes and ill protect us.
Grant us strength that we endure.
We are honored to adore you.
Let our praise sing loud and sure.)

All direction yield dominion,
Under Feroze's mighty hand,
Proffering great revelations,
Mind and Body, Soul and Land.
(From our foes and ill protect us.
Grant us strength that we endure.
We are honored to adore you.
Let our praise sing loud and sure.)

Found it. The tune is Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" from his 9th Symphony. I
believe I'm repeating the first and second sections, but I might be
repeating the first and third or doing something even stranger. Anybody
know of a full symphony version without voices online?

Not off the top of my head, but try searching sites that specialize in
MIDI files. I used to have tons of MIDIs before I discovered MP3s, and
I recall seeing 'Ode to Joy', but that was nearly five years ago.

Just as a side note: In Cedonia, where the Order of Lucia is based,
Lucia is not perceived as a goddess of bodily healing, although Her
priests can "minister to a mind diseas'd". In Cedonian religion, Lucia
is The Illuminator Who Drives Out Darkness, Goddess of Light, Justice,
and Knowledge. The Order of Lucia's goals include making education
available to all social classes in the MidSea, the prevention and
correction of injustice, and the establishment of the rule of law
throughout the nations of the MidSea. The Cedonian Emperors have
repeatedly tried to supress the Lucian Church, because the church's
belief that no one is above the law directly conflicts with the
Emperors' view of themselves as Absolute Monarchs("The law is what We
say it is; and if a law should inconvienience Our purposes, why, then
it is no longer law for Us."--Emperor Tharson XIV, great-grandfather of
Empress Yzara.)

With the recent change in the structure and governance of Cedonia, the
Order of Lucia will probably soon emerge from hiding, as the Order's
goals and the goals of the Cedonian Republicans(and, to a lesser
extent, the Kaeiran Republicans) are closely matched.

Oh, and before I forget, I quite liked the litany. You should maybe
think about putting it on the website.

Thanks for the info. The verse in that case should be:

Goddess of the Light and Justice,
    Patron of Equality,
All are one within your notice.
    Lucia, Lady, Praise to thee!

(Hmmm, that last line would be better as "Sancta Lucia, Praise to thee!" but
I don't think that lines up culturally.)

If no one objects, here's a potential background for Demerhaze.

> Lady of the Dark and Children,
> All is known beneath your gaze.

> Vengeance goddess, Demerhaze.

The Kasovian mountains form the western border of present-day Cedonia.
While the Cedonians control the foothills and much of the northeastern
portion of the range, the majority population of Kasovia is of a
separate ethnicity, distinguished from the Cedonians by language and
religion.

Demerhaze, The Dark Lady, is one of the more important Kasovian
deities, with only The Great Shepherd occupying a higher place.
Demerhaze has many aspects in Kasovia: as Goddess of Night, she must be
placated to keep her children from attacking the herds at night; but at
the same time, young Kasovian men pray for her favor and concealment
when they go sheep-stealing from their rival clans.

Demerhaze is also the Goddess of Vengeance. In this aspect, she comes
into conflict with Lucia, the Goddess of Justice in Cedonian religion.
When one who has been wronged prays to Lucia for relief, and the prayer
is granted, the result will always be just and fair to all parties, for
Lucia is just and merciful, and is also able to see the truths on both
sides of a dispute. When one who has been wronged prays to Demerhaze
for relief, and the prayer is granted, the result is always violent and
bloody retribution upon the accused person, untempered by mercy, and
without regard to whether or not the accused truly committed the wrong
against the first person.

The blood feud is a central part of Kasovian culture, and oaths of
revenge are always sworn to Demerhaze. The Kasovians have a very
complex system of custom and law surrounding the blood feud, and
Demerhaze is the ultimate enforcer of the rules of the feud, punishing
both those who go too far, and those who do not go far enough.

Demerhaze's final aspect in Kasovia is The Protector of Children. By
law and custom, boys and girls under 14 are protected from the
obligations of the blood feud, and are not valid targets. Demerhaze
enforces this rule, and protects children from other dangers; she is
also said to watch over pregnant women(also exempt from feud
obligations) and the process of birth.

Demerhaze is worshipped in other areas with similar cultural patterns,
often under somewhat different names. The goddess only accepts women as
her clerics; Priestesses of Demerhaze usually also serve their villages
as midwives and as witches, with a stong focus on herbalism.

Sounds good to me. I'd like to add:

The cult of Demerhaze is also know in the more civilized lands around
the MidSea. Best known as goddess of spies and assassins her cult is
known also known as "the Last Resort" because people go to them when all
other recourse has failed. Among the more knowledgeable the cult is
known to sponsor orphanages as well as perform assassinations.

The priesthood of Demerhaze in these lands is not restricted to women,
consisting mainly of orphans and ex-slaves of both sexes. The cult of
Demerhaze is illegal in most lands, and stronger than usual in Burcany
and Anecir.

I've gone ahead and added the fully Litany, under the title "Litany of the
Gods of Honor" to the main site. I've also added another verse for Kaskasoevin
the god of honest pleasure that mentioned in another post. (S/he is also god
of sleep, beauty, and the arts, including music, sculpture, and painting.)
Any additions or suggestions, just let me know.
