Since I don't know the policy about using other people's characters, I'm post this vignette before actually using it in my actions. Please let me know if its acceptable, and what the limits are on this sort of thing. Additionally, can someone tell me the difficulty of establishing a chair in a new style of magic at the Sorcerer's Academy in Mir? ------ Ria stalked through the fair. She would have much rather been training, or even dealing with the paperwork of her position, but the Archmage's orders had been quite clear. "Show yourself at the Midterm Fair. Make yourself approachable and don't scare anyone off." She was politician enough to understand the Archmage's motives, but the order made her feel more like a performing bear than a Warlord. Centuries ago the Midterm Fair had been founded as a chance for relatives to visit students at the Academy of Sorcery. Since then it had expanded into a three-day event complete with competitions among the students, special displays of magic by the masters, entertainments, food, and every opportunity for the students and other participants to play pranks and otherwise enjoy themselves. From the grounds of the Academy proper it had spread out to into the surrounding streets. Ria knew quite well that the Fair offered valuable relief for students after the demands of their studies, but she hadn't liked the Fair much as a student, and liked it even less today. Still, orders were orders, and she _tried_ to enjoy herself. Taking a deep breath, her attention was caught by a fair barker. "See the Exotic Magical Mysteries of Exquaestio! Cast an Exquaestio spell -- No talent required! Wonder at Images of the Dreaming! Southwest Sanraeth Park -- No Admission Fee!" "Cast a spell without talent?" Ria thought, and turned toward Sanraeth Park. Most likely the claim was simple fraud; but to make it out in public made it something that should be looked into. She frowned slightly at another barker, this one touting Exquaestio as hiring teachers, mages, and craftsmen. "And if it _isn't_ fraud," she thought, "it's even more imperative that the Council know about it as soon as possible." Sorry for the delay. I was on a holiday trip to Iceland. In principle, for the Mir Archmage, establishing a new chair is just an administrative detail. However, I have the impression that the Mirrish mages are somewhat set in their ways. On the other hand, recent decades have erroded that attitude somewhat. Mir has a strategic action right now that deals with researching a new kind of magic. Still, it would need to be clarified somewhat just how Esquaestio magic differs from the Mirrish magics. An interesting discussion. >Ria stalked through the fair. No problem with the character cameo. A new chair of magic, I think, would be almost inconceivable to Mir (took about 2 millenium to get Obeah recognized and it still doesn't have a chair) but it's up to Jason. Enjoy Iceland. mk ----- Original Message ----- From: "Juha Vesanto"To: Sent: Sunday, July 18, 2004 5:44 PM Subject: Re: [Cel] Pre-1446 Approval Needed (Mir?) > Sorry for the delay. Really? I'm talking about a chair in the university, not in the government. I admit, though, that I have no idea how the two interact. How are the members of the Mir's High Council (or whatever it's called) chosen by the way? I am fine with the story. I am currently writing a description of the University and also on the Council of Twelve. Despite what Keaton says and the image he sometimes paints :) Mir is actolly fairly open to new ideas. Now weather they become popular is another story. Obeah was looked into when it first came to Mir. It just never gained the popularity that "Sorcery" gained. So when Obeah was actolly looked into by the goverment no one really in the native population was really any good at it. And lets face it when the scholars would have gone to talk to the Onagir about it. They would not have been any more forth coming on information at that time then they are now. So the scholars who looked into obeah only found a few amitures and a bunch of mystics who think they are wiser then everyone else and don't feel anyone else is worthy to have the knoweldge. (Last statement is from Mirs point of view.:)) Maybe we could say it to the Onagnir 2000 years to share the secret. :) As for a section in the university yes it could atain a "Chair." Obeah is actolly in the university as well. > Despite what Keaton says and the image he sometimes > paints :) Mir is actolly fairly open to new ideas. If in doubt, I always err on the side of caution. Nobody comes back from a trip and yells at me for saying their people are too conservative. Omission good; commission bad. (evil grin) Besides, I was largely thinking of the council of 12. I don't see that number changing any time soon. mk ---------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, send mail to celandra-off@phoenyx.net.
