Celandra is a game in which the players take the roles of societies, rather than playing individual characters. The players will invent a society with its culture and heritage, and will guide its development and interaction with the world. Emphasis will be be placed on developing a detailed history of Celandra, along with myths and legends.

[Cel] How To Sign Up

Welcome.

What you need to do is look through the society list,
http://members.tripod.com/~kimril/qaiyore/society_index2.html
and chose one that is not being played. (The only
once that are being played are Mir, Cedonia, Kaeir,
and the Ka'Shari, and the Eerith and the Razian Coast
maybe played soon. Videssia and Laria'rathi
information is out of date so if intrested ask as to
current situation) Then send a request/proposal for
the society you want to play. You can either send
this to Juuso privatly or just send one to the whole
list.

I guess I want to start out small, so I am requesting the Free Cities. If I am accepted for this, how exactly do I start? Also, what is the technology level? (aka: Are there guns and computers, or bows and swords?

If you want to start out small. I don't suggest ALL
of the Free Cities. These cities fight more with each
other then they do with foriegners. Playing the all
of the Free cities would be very advanced (I would not
do it). I would suggest choicing one of the
individual city within the Free Cities.

The technology level is roughly pre-rennaisance. Metalwork is slightly
retarded, trade and shipbuilding are advanced, and gunpowder does not
exist. Magic exists in two essential forms; essence (magecraft) and
authority (priestcraft), and in a multitude of styles.

Start by going to
http://members.tripod.com/~kimril/qaiyore/society_index2.html and
checking out the "Free Cities," "Cormenaera," "Avatar," and "Damaris"
links. You might also check out "Zelkor." (Cormenaera is definitely
_not_ small though.)

Most player societies are currently in the north, so choosing a city
like Anacir or Anaduan will likely give more interactions with the other
players. Avatar, Damaris, and Zelkor have the advantage of being
developed, and so will require less work to get you started. My religion
(Exquaestio) has been working to make Junder a political region
independent of the Free Cities. If you'ld like we could cooperate on
building its history, description, and determinants.

(You might also note that Qaiyore is in the southern hemisphere, so it gets
colder the farther _south_ you go.)

After some thought, I would like to choose Anaduan. Sure, that would be good if you'd help me.

Now that I have a place chosen, what do I do?

I'd start by reviewing the game rules at
http://www.hut.fi/~vesanto/ihfudge/

Then, think a bit about your society before trying to put any numbers on
it.

Anaduan is at 50 degrees south latitude, roughly the same as Vancouver
Canada or Paris France. It's location on the MidSea is going to mitigate
temperature extremes and make it slightly drier than those locations
however. Nevertheless, the weather is going to be moist year round.
(Sounds like good wine country.)

The cultural situation on Orasaren has always reminded me of renaissance
Italy.

The population of the Northern Free Cities averages 500,000 for each of
the marked cities. Strong cities will have more, weaker cities will have
less (but probably not more than 1 million). This is population of the
city _and_ its surrounding countryside, of course.

Some things to consider:

What are the strengths of your society?

What are its weaknesses?

What unusual or distinctive about it?

It is strongly independent, or is it strongly allied with another Free
City (Cormenaera being the strongest).

What are its relations with Mir and Vraa'al, its two closest non-Free
City neighbors?

Once you're satisfied with the above we can go through and assign some
numbers.

[Cel] How To Sign Up

Tell me how this is:

What are the strengths of your society?

One of the strengths is that the citizens are very devoted to their government, and willing to fight for it. Because of this, it is considered very noble to join and train in the military. Another strength is that it has very unique statues, paintings and other art forms. Another strength (but with some protest by some politicians), is that they are very socialist, in the fact that everyone must be equal with them. Women are even a little bit higher respected than men. And because of this, there are large amounts of women in the job force.

What are its weaknesses?

One of it’s major weaknesses is the fact that most of the citizens don’t trust outsiders. This means that they don’t fully trust new comers, and it is hard for them to get a job. Also the business owners who ship over seas tends to by only from nations who they have major relationships with, and there are not many of them. Another problem is that sometimes they don’t have enough food that they can grow and/or ship, so sometimes there are some minor famine incidents. Finally, although most would agree, the government isn’t strong enough on law enforcement and other public needs.

What unusual or distinctive about it?

The thing that is most distinctive about it is the fact that they take great pride in their government. Even there is free speech, if someone speaks out against it, they can find their houses vandalized. But this is only with a certain group of people. Most people would just give you the cold shoulder. Magic is present in the society, but it tends to be rare, and be a family trait. But whenever someone does seem to posses a strong magical ability, the government, to be in law enforcement or the military, generally hires them.

It is strongly independent, or is it strongly allied with another Free City (Cormenaera being the strongest)?

It is strongly independent, and will sometimes form loose allies with other governments. This, however, is generally avoided.

What are its relations with Mir and Vraa'al, its two closest non-Free City neighbors?

The relationship with Mir is one of the few countries it trustes, and will mostly trade with them. They have done this because Mir is generally a peaceful nation. The relationship with Vraa’al, however, isn’t as good. This is because most people of the city are hesitant of the strange elves.

Hmmm, how about an essentially military government? _Everyone_ is in the
military, but giving anyone orders outside of the military command
structure is socially unacceptable. Rising in social rank means rising
in military rank. Anaduan might even preserve some of the ranks of
ancient Mir, the overal leader being known as the Sorcerer-General,
there being a Dragon-Captain (who doesn't actually command any dragon
riders) and so forth.

I'm not sure what you're saying here. Civic pride plus what about free
speech?

The worship of Miracradasa is likely strong in Anaduan. As in Mir she
may grant magical talent within family lines. So long as a family is
producing mages they may be seen as having Miracradasa's favor. To have
no one within a line with magical talent may be seen as a sign that
Miracradasa disapproves of that family.

Well, what are you interested in? Do want to start small and work your way
up? You might take one of the Free Cities or the Warlords of Videssia.
Interested in magic? The isle of Celamyr and the elvish Vra'al are available.
  Prefer a large, inward-looking society? That's Torphan.

Anyway, if you haven't checked out the site at
http://members.tripod.com/~kimril/qaiyore/ you should at least skim through
some of the information there. Much of the information is a bit dated, but it
does give an idea of the various existing societies. And if you want to do
something completely different, you can likely do it as long as you start
small. That's how the Exquaestio religion got started.

I vaguely remember that Torphan was not allowed as a player society when I first joined, but that may have been because the GM at the time planned to use Torphan as a plot device. For the most fun, you probably want to pick a society on the MidSea, which will allow you to interact the most with the rest of the players. Hria and Hisaria might not be much fun to play. On the other hand, Celpalar is a nation of great sailors and might provide opportunities.

There's also Milkanur, a mysterious nation on the NW Midsea (very
Egyptian/Pharaonic with lots of magic).

Or there's Taltheran, in the state of civil war between a variety of
factions, including republicanish types and various pretenders to the crown
(the former dynasty now being extinct). Cedonia and Kaeir also have
interests in the fate of Taltheran.

I vaguely remember that Torphan was not allowed as a player society when I
first joined, but that may have been because the GM at the time planned to
use Torphan as a plot device. For the most fun, you probably want to pick a
society on the MidSea, which will allow you to interact the most with the
rest of the players. Hria and Hisaria might not be much fun to play. On the
other hand, Celpalar is a nation of great sailors and might provide
opportunities.
