In 1456 the chairs in rohain and espiri magic at the College of Sorcery
come up for review. Mirafelle spent a great deal of time between 1454
and 1456 preparing a report to give to the reviewers. Copies of this
report will be sent to the major ecclesia to permit the quaestae and
anradan to know what the espiri and rohain are capable of.
The report itself is of significant size, consisting of some 200 boldly
handwritten pages. Though predominantly written in Mirrish academic
style, it may be understood by anyone willing to expend a little effort.
A professional scribe was hired to prepare the work for the review
committee, but the copies sent to ecclesia were not as nicely prepared.
The work follows this outline:
* Introduction
* Gratitude to the gods, particularly Feroze
* Acknowledgment of the college and government of Mir
* Report includes both espiri and rohain magic because of
overlapping terminology.
* Technical details excluded because they are useful only to the
practitioners.
* Overview
* Nature of Exquaestio Magic
* Glimmering
* Gleams
* Facets
* Using Glimmering
* Genius
* Aspects
* Using Genius
* Effects
* Glimmering Rites (3 new gleams since chair established)
* Group Magic
* Rohain Accomplishments (5 new aspects since chair established)
* Limited Permanent Effects and Magical Tools
* Glimmering and High Magic
* High Sorcery spells that have changed because of Glimmering or Genius
* Discussion of possible changes to High Sorcery spells with
emphasis on teleportation and clairvoyance
* The mixing of Feroze's and Miracradsa's boons
* Speculations
* Possible Future Developments
* Flying ship
* Levitation Engine
* Water Purification & Salt Manufacturing
* Clairvoyant communications system
* Conclusion
* Unlimited Possibilities

Rock salt is not really practical yet, so most salt will come from sea salt extracted through the traditional evaporation method. Is salt manufacture left to individual nations to worry about? This is something that wars could easily be fought over, given its economic importance. That would also lead to magic being invested in salt production as well (as Jefferson is planning to do) to speed up/increase. I've done some research into salt production in the past, and it seems that there is quite a bit of controversy over just when salt mining really got started. I can't give the cites to the sites now, but I'll try to do so later this evening. > Is salt manufacture left to individual nations to worry about? In most Earth countries, salt sales and production have been government monopolies. The United States is very nearly the only country to never have placed restrictions on salt manufacture and the only country to never have taxed salt. In France, the salt tax was one of the factors that led to the Revolution; in China, the Imperial Government made huge amounts of money from the salt tax. I think I mentioned somewhere that in Sedonia, salt is a government monopoly. That's what I assumed. Salt is valuable, but not all that difficult to get. Any nation with a coastline will be able to make as much as it needs. > This is > something that wars could easily be fought over, given its economic > importance. Actually, that particular speculation was more concerned with Water Purification; taking sea water and using it for irrigation. The production of high quality salt would be a side effect, but one which would enable the manufacturers to undercut those not using this method. And this is a speculation, much development would have to be done before it would be practical.
