Subject: Default Skills: A Survey

I would like to take a survey of how everyone on the list handles "default
skills" in their Fudge games. If a player wants her character to attempt a
skill that she has not purchased levels in, do you automatically rate it as
Poor (or non-existent perhaps) or do you base it on an an appropriate
attribute?

I have been considering a rule that says if a skill can be used "untrained",
then the default level for that skill will be two levels less than the level
of the character's appropriate attribute. Example: If Serek wants to ride a
horse, but has not purchased Riding skill, her skill level will be Mediocre,
which is two levels less than her Good Dexterity.

Does this sound reasonable? Steffan, Ann and Carl, please feel free to
chime in.

Thanks,

Anthony R.

27 Personally, I prefer less-detailed skills, my players sadly disagree. So my question is this....I started thinking about the 5pF rules and how they are divided into skill groups, and and idea struck me. (Others may have had similar thoughts, s JohnUghrin 2000-09-08 02:11:20
