I liked the new Fudge Factor, especially the articles on Magic Items and
"Guests", mostly because they reminded me of a concept I came up with years
ago. Way back in junior high, I do believe. A friend and I were coming up
with concepts for video games. Not that we had any ability to program, mind
you.
I came up with an idea for a Japanese-style "RPG" (Final Fantasy, Breath of
Fire, etc.) called "The Seven Swords". The idea was that this ancient master
swordsmith had made these powerful blades imbued with elemental powers and
sentience. And then a bunch of stuff happened, and the swords were scattered
across the world.
The gimmick was that the swords possessed whoever picked them up, merging
their minds but the sword was dominant (at least at first). Our young boyish
hero finds one of the swords, ZAP, he's now the vessel for the sword's
soul...and embarks upon a quest to recover the others, slay the Ancient
Evil, etc. etc., with the punk kid along for the ride.
It's probably been done before, now that I think of it. :)
If the game were ever made, one would be able to swap the swords among one's
characters ("hmmm...I'll give the orange sword to my mage, and the blue
sword to the kid...") or even "kidnap" other characters ("What's this sword
doing lying here? I guess I'll just pick it up-" ZAP!). Fun.
Might be interesting to use the concept in a campaign one of these days...
Anyway, nice to see the zine is coming out a trifle more regularly.
