Howdy All,
OGC (Open Gaming Convention) in Manchester, NH just finished last weekend,
and I thought I'd give a report of how things went.
First of all, this is only the con's second year, and yet it did very
well. The convention was well planned and well prepared and ran quite
smoothly overall. The staff was friendly and helpful.
The only issue I had with the staff/registration was that the booklets and
web site did not include a grid that shows what is running in each slot.
So, finding an available game last minute was next to impossible. They did
respond to that quickly by posting a large sign for each slot with a list
of the events running. They have also promised that this will be fixed for
next year, and based on their responsiveness, I believe them.
The con was not huge, but it was definitely not small.
There were a lot of RPGA events running, which meant that non-RPGA events
tended to have a tougher time filling slots. But even with that challenge,
I did very well!
Out of 7 events, only two did not run. All the rest not only ran, but went
smoothly and everyone got very pumped during it! Heck, I even picked up
some fans!
All the events I ran were done with Now Playing (which of course, is a
Fudge game), were as follows:
Slot 1: The Anita Blake Disappearance (based on Laurell K. Hamilton's
"Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter" novel series.
Slot 2: Battlestar Galactica: "Spies" (based on the new series)
Slot 4: The Posse (a western)
Slot 5: Codename: Kids Next Door
Slot 6: Ghost Hunters (an FPI episode)
Slot 8: The Anita Blake Disappearance
Slot 9: CSI: "Killer"
The events that didn't run were Galactica and The Posse. I understood The
Posse, because I wasn't sure if westerns would be popular. I was surprised
by Galactica. It always sells out at other cons. However, there were tons
of RPGA events running in that slot as well as a sneak peak at the new
Serenity RPG.
Codename: Kids Next Door was a blast, but I had geared it toward young
kids and only one youngster played. The rest were adults. They finished it
in only 2 hours. Still, they had a great time, so it wasn't a failure!
Ghost Hunters was awesome! It filled in one of the hardest slots, and ran
beautifully! I'm going to make this a published adventure.
CSI also sold out and ran very well. Just like in the show, they split up
to investigate two cases. That was rather clunky because I had three
people on one case and three on the other, and they didn't have an
opportunity to cross talk. I think I'll only do one case next time.
Anita Blake was by far the highlight of the con! It was originally only
scheduled in one slot, but they had to turn away more than 6 people, so I
opened another in Slot one last minute and the game still ran very well!
It was high on roleplaying, and everyone was pleasantly surprised at just
how well I handled the setting and feel of the books. All I can say is
"Wow!"
So that was it. The location was very nice with lots of food that
delivers, and in walking distance.
Because I'm an author and publisher, I was a Guest of Honor there, and so
I was interviewed by a local newspaper.
It was a very good convention, and I'm looking forward to next year.
Besides, it's a 15 minute drive from my home :)
