I recently had a rather interesting idea for a magic item for a FRPG (okay, AD&D varient *grin*). It's sort of based loosely on The Slayers Sword of Light as well. It started with a friend of mine thinking of making a staff that channels and enhances magical energy. Instead of storing the spell, you cast the spell through it and it makes it more powerful. I thought of it and how the "Sword of Light" in Slayers can do that as well. (In fact, one spell, the Giga Slave, requires the Sword of Light in order to be cast.) So I created the Sword of Shadows. (Named that because it's the family sword of the Shadowborn Clan, which has been lost for thousands of years (since the time of Iggliv Shadowborn, a rather... ruthless sorceress who ended up fighting her own daugher who became a Holy Warrior of Surn (God of Valor) and losing much of her power). I also created a series of spells that could be cast through the blade and which are enhanced when you do so. Some spells, in fact, are useless without the blade (like Shadow Skill, which basically gives you bonuses to hit and damage with the Shadowblade). Ideas for the sword itself was Spell Parrying - the wizard rolls a to-hit with his own THACO, hitting AC 5 - the spell level. Sword Skill, which allows the sorceror while in combat to fight like a warrior (not specialized, but same THACO as a warrior). Supercharged Spells - casting a spell into the blade and then channelling another spell through the blade to enhance its power (thus being able to cast maybe a 15d6 Fireball, etc.) Spell Enhances - spells from the Tome of Shadows are more powerful through the blade - and some cannot be cast without it. Sword Enchantments - some spells fromt he Tome of Shadows enhance the blade itself for a short while. So, what do you think? Any suggestions?
