Magic questions

I'm not sure if I asked this before.

But in a Fantasy RPG system, one of the staples when PCs are able to use
magic is the Spellbook. Wizards go through great lengths at times to
gain new spellbooks and learn new enchantments.

My question is, how long should it take for a wizard to learn new spells
and would intelligence influence that length of time? How much would it
influence it?

Also, how much time each day would a wizard need to study a spell to
learn it? Is it something he can do in just a few hours each night, or
is it agonizing research that takes all day and much of the night?

And would a wizard realize that they cannot learn the spell near the
beginning of his research, or only after all that agonizing time and
effort? (Unless of course the wizard is stubborn and continues to try
and learn it even when it's a lost cause...)

Depends entirely on the setting and how magic works.

Magic questions

I think it also depends on how much time you wish to spend on that
individual player. If you wish to make it long and tedious( which may be
appropriate for your campaign) you also increased your workload on this
single issue, if played out. I must admit I usually let my players learn
new spells during what ever character advancement system I was running. I
would only make her/him/it give detailed accounts if it was a brand new
spell that no one had ever created.
