He is NOT talking about the mage leader becoming all powerful, He's talking about the mage's ENEMY becoming all powerful. Personally, I feel that this sort of situation is very hard on the players. Whilst I agree with the concept, as it poses a nice moral dilemma for the players, it is sometimes necessary for the gm to allow them the oppertunity to find away to do both. Possibly find a way of defeating the evil mage following a hard battle destroying the tower of domination. If he wants to make them work for it, make the solution a riddle or a puzzle which they have to collect items and put together in order to find the way to defeat the mage.
