'lo, out there. Since yesterday in the evening I am new to this list. My name is Fred Krug. I am quite new to roleplaying games having played them, especially AD&D 2E and AD&D Options, for ten years now and mastered them for nine years. I have collected many experiences in AD&D, SR and CoC and some of the World of Darkness games. And right now I am DMing D&D in two different groups. It is a pleasure for me to join this list and I'm looking forward to exchanges with this list. Now, here is something to think about: How useful would it be to convert the speedfactors from AD&D on the D&D 3E system? I often listened to D&D gamers arguing that so many different weapons existed which did not have any effect on the individual initiative by the rules of D&D. In AD&D this was highly interesting, for the speedfactors of the weapons were able to change a lot in the moments when to act. Thereby the rules about the speedfactors were optional. In D&D we have only one 'intiative check' right at the start of an encounter in which the speedfactors of weapons would only work one time in a whole. So: Would it be wise or useful to enter the speedfactors (somehow) from AD&D to D&D? A search of the list archive for 'weapon speed' should show the extent of the discussion this subject can provoke. >'lo, out there. And a Haloo back. :) >How useful would it be to convert the speedfactors from AD&D on the D&D >3E system? I don't know, how useful would it be? Do you feel you need it? I have only a nodding familiarity with the new 3e, and it's been a long time since I've played 2e (and even then, we didn't use the speed factors), so I could be wrong about the impact, but I would think you could add the speed factors relatively easily if you really wanted them. Combat is an abstraction. With them isn't really all that greater in realism than without, but it does impinge upon some people's suspension of disbelief, and that's an important issue. If it messes with what *you* think is the way it should be, than fix it. From what I understand, speed factors were removed to slim down the combat system and make it work quicker (along with only one init roll). If that bugs you, go ahead and fix it.
