Okay, I think there's more email flying *off* the list than on. First of all, Noctifer, MikeF, you guys are in charge of sussing out other list providers, because I think GMAST *may* be due for a split into moderated and unmoderated, and the latter needs to be on YahooGroups or somewhere big that can afford real counsel. It's not a definite yet, but that's what a lot of people are advocating (at least, a lot of people have advocated giving the argumentative people somewhere else to do it), and it'd be nice if we could do it in an orderly, polite fashion. Second, if GMAST stays here and stays "unmoderated" (excepting the web archives, which are "public" and therefore subject to a little more legal mumbo-jumbo, so I've removed the potentially illegal material), we need a way to determine when someone *does* get kicked off the island. Er, list. (I've never watched that show, so don't expect me to grok any references cleverer than that.) We said we'd only do it when the group at large wanted it, but while that sounds good on paper, it isn't so practical in, well, practice. It'd turn into a big character-bashing witch hunt. So, what's a good barometer of when someone is more harmful than helpful to the list? (This is something that will be needful for the non-Phoenyx GMAST, if it comes to that.) Without having it turn into a list- eating slanging match? Third, I've removed the questionable posts from the web archives, including any posts that quoted the questionable ones, and probably some that just *might* have been quotes. This doesn't affect what anyone receives, just the archives. And the stuff is still there in raw form, it's just not published on the web, the "public" part being the place we have the most exposure, legally speaking. And I'm getting tired of doing the work, so if GMAST suddenly stops responding tomorrow, it's because somebody got out of control and I don't have time to deal with it; consider it a cooling-off period until after Nathan's birthday party tomorrow night. It's his first, and I'm not going to mess up preparations to deal with someone's adolescent tantrums. -- Karen J. Having slept on it, my mind is even clearer on this point. Gmast, as it
stands now, needs to go.
I propose that the Phoenyx create its own "general roleplaying discussion"
forum for those who prefer a more polite environment, and Gmast can find a
home elsewhere. I don't want to kill Gmast. I just don't want it on my
server. (If nobody is really interested in moving Gmast and all are
willing to change Gmast's "charter", that would be sufficient. But I
don't want people saying I've hijacked Gmast, and all it takes is one
person to create a Gmast somewhere else and split the community anyway.
I think changing the name here and letting Gmast be hosted somewhere else
is the more realistic option.)
This isn't entirely kamikaze's fault. It has a lot to do with it being
made clear that we are not allowed to make Gmast conform to the Phoenyx
standards. Kamikaze's just an example of why I find the anarchy of Gmast
unacceptable on the Phoenyx. When I brought Gmast on three years ago, I
thought it was a good thing. But the Phoenyx has changed in three years.
We've developed a reputation that we're proud of, and we've developed an
atomosphere that I don't think Gmast belongs in anymore.

If everyone else isn't, I agree with Carl to move the free wheeling, no holds barred, rude as we wanna be discussions to Yahoo Groups or something similar. I think Noctifer is the ideal person to start the new group if so inclined, since his moderating style seems to be in line with the old GMAST tradition. Admin Question: If this change goes forward, will everyone automatically be subscribed to the new group, or will we need to specifically subscribe? While it would be easier for everyone to just be brought over automatically, I think it would be better for everyone who want to join a GRD list on Phoenyx to actually subscribe themselves. This way, everyone who is in the new Phoenyx forum has specifically asked to be there. -- Michael W. Noctifer has volunteered. Since no one else came forth earlier, I have to
problem supporting him in this.

As much as I'd like to start with a "full" list, I agree with you. If
we're moving Gmast and not just changing its charter, I'd be effectively
stealing Gmast's subscriber list and subscribing them to my own list.

It's assumed that the majority would agree to changing the charter if
that's what we did... that is, the current group agrees to make a change.
Creating a new group, telling the old group to go away, and then
subscribing all the old group's subscribers to the new group seems rather
different to me.

Give me a couple of days to get things together and I'll have things running. Btw, I'm not planning on just subscribing everyone to the new list, either. I'm going to send out invitation e-mails to the people on this list so they can decide for themselves if they want to rejoin. I'd hate for someone to get subscribed to the new list who didn't want to be. If you think this is a bad idea, let me know (publically, if you think it has public value, otherwise to noctifer@aol.com). So hang in there, fellow GMASTers...I'm going to do my best to make this as easy a transition as I can. Heck, if Yahoo has a magic address equivalent to GMAST-on, I can send out a special list message with that as the reply-to, and people can just reply to it if they want on that one. And I'll send out a special list message with gmast-off as reply to, so if they want off this one, they can just reply to it. -- Karen J.
